Top Cat
Wildcats mascot George Piper begins his assault on the British Under-15 Championship on Sunday. The Sturminster Newton-based youngster travels to Buxton for the opening round of the event and Wildcats boss White is confident of the 13-year-old’s chances. He said: “George did really well in last year’s championship where he was one of the youngest riders. But he’s come on in leaps and bounds since then and I reckon he’ll turn a few heads in this year’s series. “George has been riding down at Weymouth ever since speedway came back in 2003 and the improvement over that time has been immense. His dad Steve is the club’s youth training officer and a lot of George’s improvement is down to him. “There’s some very good young riders in the championship and last year’s winner Josh Auty will be out to defend his crown. But I think George has got as good a chance as anyone and the whole of Weymouth is routing for him. “He’s one of the nine seeded riders in the tournament and that means he’s got a bye through to every round which is tremendous.” Weymouth’s Wessex Stadium will again be hosting a round of the championship on Monday, May 30. British Under-15 Championship dates: Round 1 – Buxton tomorrow, Round 2 Armadale May 29, Round 3 Weymouth May 30, Round 4 Newport June 5, Round 5 Scunthorpe July 3, Round 6, Sheffield September 22, Round 7 Mildenhall October
