Try These For Rule Changes !

If it aint broke don’t fix it!

I started watching speedway in the early seventies and there was rider control which was definitely ‘broke’. It took a few years to bring in the points limit but when it arrived it worked reasonably well.

That was until the more astute promoters (Adams at CH?) realised that they could put a team together and leave a rider out until the first GS averages were published, having reduced the combined team average in an irrelevant competition, said rider entered the fray and voilla, a team still within the limit but a fair bit of creative accounting has occurred to get there.

Tac subs, 6 points down worked fine and wasn’t broke. Picking gate positions when 6 down was tried and would be worth looking at again. I preferred allowing managers to decide which gates their riders used in every race (1/3 or 2/4) and was preferable to the fixed gates we have now.

The golden doubles and other tactical nonsense have simply pandered to Sky. A team is being hammered, enter tactical double and if an 8-1 follows its game on. Well for a couple of races until normal service is resumed. Now and then an unlikely result ensues. (BV v Arena!!)

Let’s go back to team managers choosing gate positions, if 6 down tac subs, like we know and love, perhaps allow a rider more than one? (just a thought?) 6 down means you can select 1/3 or 2/4. The current points limit is about right.

Guests are the biggest single factor in making speedway a ‘misunderstood’ sport. We know we need them but try explaining why Leigh Adams is riding for poole next week when he normally rides for Swindon and you are bombarded by comments like “so if Fowler is injured we can have Rooney instead? Ha Ha Ha” It’s got to be rider replacement every time and NO guests for speedway to really be taken seriously.

My apologies for referring to this old item but I have honestly only just noticed it.

I agree with it entirely, in fact it could have been me saying it. Thank you 'Drop A Cog' for brightening up my day. Keep up the good work.

I would like to see the last 3 races formats changed. The best riders having to race each other in heats 13 & 15 means that top riders have to finish third and 4th in these heats which gives them a lower average than say a good reserve or second string. Such riders do not have to face the top boys very often. Last seaon only one rider ended with a 10 average and as such was the only A or Top Grade rider. Crump, Adams, Hancock etc are better than 9 point riders.

If say promotion and relegation were in operation and if say it was Swindon who were relegated and if say it was Kings Lynn who were promoted obviously the likes of Adams,Richardson & Ulamek would not be able to ride in the Premier League,.Could they not be allowed to ride for Kings Lynn whose surplus riders in return being allowed to ride for Swindon. Just a thought.
