SwineTown
Does anyone recall Arnie Pander - an Oxford danish-born rider who crashed at Cov in July 1962? Any details of the incident would be appreciated.
Richard Tyrrell
How could any self respecting Oxford supporter not remember the club's first 'Great Dane', Arne Pander? The year of his accident at Coventry was, in fact, 1961, when he sustained a fractured skull in a collision with Les Owen who, it was alleged, cut across the front of him. I would suggest a visit to the local library where you can read newspapers of that time would reveal more about the incident. norbold
It happened at Coventry on 29 July 1961. The Speedway Star & News reported: "The meeting was marred by a crash in the second half involving Arne Pander and Les Owen. In the top points' scorers' race, the pair were fighting out the lead when they came down together. Both were taken to hospital, Owen with facial cuts and abrasions, Pander for an X-ray on head injuries." The following week, the Star& News reported: "It was four days after his bad crash at Brandon before Arne Pander regained consciousness, then only for a few moments. Earlier Arne had been moved by ambulance from Coventry to the Radcliffe Infirmary at Oxford, a hospital held in high regard for its treatment of brain injuries. It was a Ted Flanaghan's instigation that Pander was moved, the 50-mile journey with police escort taking three hours. Meanwhile, les Owen - involved in the same crash - was discharged on the Monday..."
Richard Tyrrell
Swine Town, Of course not. Just saying that Arne Pander was very highly rated at Oxford in those times as the first 'Great Dane', long before Hans Neilsen came onto the scene. Good luck with the research.
