Phil
I have been asked to post the following on behalf of the VSRA... The VSRA (Veteran Speedway Riders Association) has been given the opportunity to create a Speedway Museum in the grounds of the Paradise Wildlife Park, Broxbourne in Hertfordshire; about 15 mins drive from Rye House Speedway. The owner of the wildlife park, ex rider Peter Sampson, has made the required space available, it will require a great deal of funds and work to put up the buildings to house the collection. We have sponsors for about £25,000 but we will need something nearing twice that amount, so we are looking for donations and fund raising and when the time comes to start on the work we will be looking for volunteer workers for bricklaying, carpentering, plumbing etc. If anyone can possibly help with donations, cheques can be made out to the VSRA and sent to the secretary Vic White, 90 Ruskin Avenue, Long Eaton, Notts. NG10 3HX. All donations will be acknowledged by post. Please make offers of physical help to the same address. A book containing all the names of people who help will be on show at the Museum. Those who have bought the Once a Jolly Swagman video or DVD from me may be interested to know that £5.00 from each purchase will be donated to the fund. For any more info you can contact George Barclay, Tel 020 8592 3361 or myself at Vikingukvideo@aol.com Should our Quest fail all donations will be returned to source. Thanks Alan Hodkinson. TonyMac
We will be putting our weight behind the campaign to raise funds for the building of the museum, with blanket coverage in the next issues of both Backtrack and Vintage Speedway Magazine. Part of this will be an interview with George Barclay, but we also already have an interview with the great Ivan Mauger, who is all in favour of the museum. It is an absolute must that speedway has its own 'home' to preserve its rich history now and for many years to come...
Gemini
My son had a ride out to Donnington Park yesterday and he reckons there is a speedway bike on show there in the bar area. Anyone know anything about this? It certainly doesn't sound like Ivan Mauger's gold plated one as he said it was a bit scruffy to say the least. Shaledodger
Of course we already have an excellent speedway museum here in Scotland - From Cinders to Shale. Ex Berwick Bandit, Ian Paterson, has a large display of complete bikes, engines, body colours, leathers, helmets, programmes, badges, posters, trophies etc - in fact everything and anything to do with our wonderful sport from its earliest days right up to the present time. The open days for 2005 are as follows:- Sunday 24th April; Sunday 5th June; Sunday 31st July & Sunday 2nd October Opening hours are from 11am until 2pm and there is a £3 entrance fee. From Cinders to Shale can be found at the Edgefield Road Industrial Estate at Loanhead (off the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass at the Straiton junction onto the B702. The industrial estate is on the left). It's well worth a visit.
Team Man
MUSEUM PROJECT PROGRESS Of the first nineteen donations from VSRA members where the amount pledged totalled £1990 actual sum received was £3280. A very encouraging start. Mr. Tony Mole has been an inspiration indeed. BSPA office, and many tracks too have been very helpful and interested in our progress. It would be of great help if any supporter’s clubs could arrange with their promoters to take a collection(s) at a meeting at their home track and add a mention in their Fanzine. I thank all of you for your interest in this venture, and assure you that should we fail to meet our target all monies will be returned to source. For further information contact George Barclay on 020 8592 3361. Below some dates that may interest the interested. Saturday and Sunday 21st and 22nd May sees our fund raising activities at the British Motorcycle Federation meet at Peterborough Showground. Again with the Men in Black and again talking up speedway racing to all and sundry. Any ex riders or ex speedway personnel we come across will be introduced to a VSRA application form. Saturday and Sunday 18th and 19th June. VSRA Patron Lord Montagu has given us the offer of a free stand at Beaulieu for the fantastic Motorcycle World meeting. This is a two day meet. Again with the Men in Black and accompanied by Dave Russell who is making all equipment we require to present our project at his own cost as a donation to the fund. Saturday July 16th We are setting up a stall at the London City Airport open day in conjunction with Terry Stone and the Men in Black road show. An annual event, it has had Spitfire, Corsair, among the warbirds doing their displays plus quite the most skilful aerobatic aircraft performances one could hope to see over East London. An array of attractions and food stalls with fairground rides for the kids and all for free admission. Starts 12 noon. There we will be seeking donors to the fund and taking the opportunity to talk to visitors about their local Speedway tracks.
