What Is The History Behind....

Helmet colours pre-war would have been a blue and a yellow for one team and a red and a white for the other. red and white were the away team at that. In 1946 when I first went to Norwich it was red and blue v white and yellow. The rules said red (post office) and blue (royal) were the home colours. This only lasted the 1946 season with officialdom. The People Speedway Guide quoted page 87, rule 162, Identification Colours - Red, Blue, White, Yellow & Black and also the 1947 fixtures, this was done as the steward (ref) found it difficult to pick the different white & yellow on wet nights, they didn't just cancel in those days. Stenners 1948 states yellow band 4" deep at the bottom. The People Annual only printed the rules they thought would be beneficial to spectators and these were printed with the official rule numbers. These numbers went up to 523. Again for 1953 the y&b became a quartered cover. I can remember it being in a Stenners Annual where some altered rules used to be listed. A lot of programmes still listed r, b, w, y anyhow although the y/b was actually worn by riders. Nowadays there are variations like orange and pink in use by some riders

I think it is difficult to pick blue or green under lights moreso than white or yellow

Sorry,mervjankefanclub-haven't seen a UK meeting in years-sometimes go on youtube-so let me get this straight-its now Red,Blue, Green,Yellow-why the hell did they get rid of the y/b-I liked r,b,w y/b- can't they stop tinkering with the old ways when did these changes occur??Its ridiculous. P.S. Don't knock the sauce-as Oscar Wilde said"work is the curse of the drinling classes" Hic!!

Thats right Bob, not long into SKYs TV coverage the White helmet was changed to Green and the Y/B to plain Yellow, and all for reasons best known themselves. Like Parsloes says it is more difficult to distinguish a Green helmet cover from the Blue, than it would be White from Blue  And as I said the SGP and SWC still use the white helmet

I seem to remember the original idea was so that the helmet colours matched the four colours on the Sky Remote. They were going to introduce interactive features to utilise this. But it never happened.

Hmmm... Does that mean they figured the "power" button on the remote could be used to interact with Justin Elkins???

Who is Justin Elkins anyway??

Ex-rider who rode mid 90ish to early 2000's. Rode for a number of teams including (but not inclusive) Swindon, Poole, Edinburgh, Long Eaton, Reading. Showed early promise but another one who didn't make it. I recollect that many Reading fans were upset with the number of engine failures he suffered during his time with them (there was speculation about too much testing being done, usually during meetings).

The reason for the yellow and black flag is simple, the black diagonal cross contrasting on a yellow background makes it highly visible and unlikely to be mistaken for any other flag.

"In the early days with six man handicap races colours included, green, pink and one with spots on it. (not sure of the colour)

In 1929 teams often wore helmet covers in team colours, Wembly in red and white halves, Lea Bridge in a black and white check cover. In many cases both riders of the home team wore red covers and the away riders wore blue.

Birmingham 1930 colours were pink and blue so the ht leader wore pink and his partner blue.

during the pre war years other variations were R,W,B,Y.....B,Y,R,W.. R,Y,B,W....W,Y,R,B....W,R,B,Y...depending on which track.

R,B,W,Y was not adopted as standard until 1939

Black covers and orange covers were also seen in the early years.

the yellow and black cover appeared after the war,.... although it was used in 1932 at Wembly and West Ham."
