Belle Vue V Cradley Heath 1984 Premiership Trophy...

Cradley's 1983 all conquering side had to be dismantled for the 'good of the sport', which left us a bit top heavy.

Belle Vue were going to win everything in 1984 according to the Press and Stuart Bamforth, and so Cradley weren't given much of a chance.

Mister Inconsistency himself Finn Jensen top scored with 10 points and we beat the Aces 40-38, which every true (and old!) speedway fan knows, is the definition of happiness.

Watching Finn was always a mixture of anticipation, frustration and sometimes happiness.... he could beat a World Champion in one race and then look like a rank amateur in the reserves race. A real one-off!

We had the dubious pleasure of having Finn Jensen in the Leicester Lions team as well.

Afraid I'm not very keen on riders like him who end of with a scorechart of 0-3-0-3-0. I'd rather someone be consistent even if it's only a row of third places.

Got to be Brian Nixon(Tigers reserve) beating Newcastle no 1 David Bargh at Rough Pk in the 1991 KOC semi-final. Nixon had been discarded by the Diamonds earlier that year because he couldn't ride the track!!

The most unexpected performance @ Kingsmead was Peppy (Richard Pettman) pulling a wheelie on the home straight and going under the tractor wheel on the first bend!

sounds painful shazzy! was he ok?

I saw Savalas Clouting score a point once!! cant remember when but im pretty certain the other guy didnt have an engine failure or fall off!! Sham as Tim Woodward sponsored him , his kit was immaculate just couldnt ride.

Andy Smith winning his 3rd British Crown!

Though for me i think it was seein a young Tony Rickardsson at Foxhall in the Billy Sanders Memorial meeting, having never seen the track and the witches fans wondering how good he may be, well he flew round came second and went on to do ok i think!!

Einar Kyllingstad's 15point max for KL at Blunsdon in circa '86

Never did anything before or after but was absolutely brilliant that day!

And the mighty Cheetahs dished out a thrashing in the 2nd half of the double header in a great afternoon of speedway, even a Swindon fan would have to agree.

Edited as a technophobe posted the same post twice

Another meeting which comes to mind was the Internationale at Wimbledon circa 1974 - Billy Sanders made his debut in the meeting, replacing someone who was injured and rode like a World Champion - I can't remember if he won the meeting but I know he came close.

Well I remember that meeting too as it was the first meeting I ever attended at Plough Lane!

Billy did indeed replace a rider and finidshed unbeaten but not enough to win the meeting!

What happened was that his Ipswich team mate John Louis broke the tapes in his fourth ride (unbeaten at the time..) and meeting reserve Billy came in took his place and won the race! That though was his only ride of the meeting!!

Didn't Charlie Monk win the Internationale? That must rate as an "unexpected performance."

Was that 1965? Four performances at the abbey that i think were great performances.1.Eric Boocock (1974) a reserve ? For Halifax 14 pts Crash beat him? 2. Finn Thomsen (a oversized engine) ? was awesome 19 pts ? I think 3. SIgalos ( a 15? Max from reserve ( never met Kilby) and Jankowski for the hawks a max.

Viktor Kuznetsov scoring 10 points in the 1986 World Final to finish 5th.

The original Ales Dryml, coming to Coventry with Birmingham & scoring 11 points from 4 rides in the early eighties I think, It was from No4 position if I remember & won the Brummies the match,...................git

He actually scored a maximum (it might have been paid) - and it was his first BL outing of the season!

Not sure this was that big of a surprise - Finn was always an enigma, so the fact that he managed 4 good rides out of 5 (as opposed to 1-3 good rides out of 5) wasn't hugely unexpected.

That 84 Cradley side was still a damn good team - 4 world class riders (all of home rode Hyde Rd well) in Gundersen, King, Collins and Grahame, a good second string in Simon Cross, the enigmatic Finn Jensen and Stephen Collins (who it's fair to say was rubbish).

I saw the Bristol v Bradford match on 6th April 1951 when Ron Peace a second string for the visitors won his first three rides beating top home riders Billy Hole and Dick Bradley in the process. He only scored another 95 points home and away all season.
