Guest denisthemenis
I think Peter Collins. Someone else has made about 16 postings here on this topic and mentioned someone called Barney. Who is' Barney? Ronnie Moore is a big name... but I do not remember him.

britneyspears
As i was weaned slowly onto speedway at Cradley Heath from a very young age id have to say Bruce Penhall or Erik Gundersen for me Happy memories
Bryce
Yes, Bruce Penhall. I had the pleasure of seeing almost every meeting he rode for the Heathens. I often had the impression (as he blasted away another track record, or notched up another maximum) that he really wasn't even trying most of the time. And no, I'm not referring to a certain Overseas Final at White City.
Gemini
I never could understand why Bruce got all that criticism. If it had been two English riders we would think it selfish if say Peter Collins had knocked out Chris Morton, when he didn't need to win the race. I wasn't at the meeting but know Bruce got a lot of stick, unfairly I thought.
whowasthatberntpersson
Bruce got "So much stick"because he was so blatant about what he did, pulling wheelies and making it so obvious he wasn't trying. There were plenty of Cradley fans who weren't happy about it either, Bruce could of won the meeting, and many fans had spent alot of money travelling to see him win or at least try to win. Believe me the green and white masses copped some stick that day too. However Bruce was an immensely gifted rider, up there with the very best I would say. Bryce
If I recall, didn't the Collins brothers proceed to team ride Shawn Moran out of the run-off for the last qualifying places? Greeted by huge cheers. Oh and then all of us on the Cradley coaches got a bit of abuse too. Then on the way home on the M1, we got in a jam, and ended up at one point with Kenny Carter in his van in the middle lane, and a busload of Heathens either side of him. Sigh. A very entertaining day. It seems sooo long ago.
britneyspears
Oh and then all of us on the Cradley coaches got a bit of abuse too. Yes I remember that well even though I was a small child at the time, Bruce's van needed a police escort out of the stadium due to the disappointed fans rocking it and throwing things at it, the language was pretty colourful too, Bruce however wasn't even in the van, I remember this part of the evening so clearly because little old me was in the van and terrified
BrizHeathen
Speaking of talented riders, as we were, two of the most talented I've ever seen (Penhall and Carter) were such a drawcard when appearing alone, the interest when they were involved in a meeting together was unbelievable. Oh for a rivalry like that now.
shazzybird
remember this part of the evening so clearly because little old me was in the van and terrified  Sad when things like this happen, bet it scared you. Back in those days of speedway if that had happened to someone like hmmmmm for instance Kelvin Mullarkey (although not in the same league as Bruce Penhall obviously:!: ) I feel sure he would have got out of his van and had a punch up! He was a right character along with the Late Ashley Pullen.
Bryce
Heh. I remember Kelvin smashing the window of the ref's box one night. He was definitely a character!
mark cox
The one and only Jan O Pedersen has not been mentioned enough in this subject! On a track (currently a field, soon to be a bunch of houses-cheers nice housing company!) that produced five World Champions, here was a rider who couldn't beat Jimmy Squib out of the gate, but could pass any rider from the back. Big track or small track, he seemed to know instinctively the best track lines and was always total entertainment.

Although he "batted for the wrong side" so to speak & I generally have a pathological dislike of all things Black Country, I got to say Jan O was a brilliant rider/racer & seemed like a genuine nice bloke too, he would have looked better in Yellow & Black though!
