GOSFORD SPEEDWAY

GOSFORD SPEEDWAY has closed for the season after staging only four meetings.

Promoter Terry Poole cited a lack of sponsorship and difficulties with Motorcyling NSW as two of the reasons.

A lack of crowd support has also contributed to the closure with ordinary speedway meeting outside the championship bracket failing to attract enough spectators to make the meetings financially viable.

Said one of the speedway organisers Jan Grainger, on behalf of Poole: “The cost to run Gosford speedway is large, considering the venue has to be hired and the current rent is in the thousands per meeting. This, together with advertising,

insurance, permit charges by MNSW, prizemoney, security and other expenses, makes it an extremely costly exercise so sponsorship is extremely important.

“MNSW have rules which they insist must be abided by but with speedway

running every couple of weeks and the uncertainty of rider availability and what type of programme is to be run, it is impossible to have supplementary regulations submitted to MNSW for approval two months prior to each event.

“Trying to follow these procedures is extremely frustrating for all concerned. This is just one of the issues faced with our governing body.”

This is sad, sad news. I know that the Poole family has given so much to the sport, and for this to have to happen is horrible!
