AX Racing Team
Results from S.A Title which we all knew who would win 1st Rory Schlein 2nd Kevin Doolan 3rd Matt Weathers 4th Joel Parsons <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Schlein was unbeaten all night, except for 2 engine failures so was lucky to even make final. Parsons rode well but fell off 3 times, twice whilst leading in qualifying rounds, so was lucky to make final.
Guest Sir Lunchalot
It was a funny evening at the SA state titles !! Firstly the weather was as unpredictable as ever and from a glorious day that was just short of 39 degrees at around 5 pm ended up quite cool after a cold change came through accompanied by a strong gusty wind. On top of that the top three or four favourites all had various fun and games in the way of mechanical problems, falls and unexplained poor rides that probably cancelled each other out but also meant that if hot favourite Rory Schlein didn't win his last heat he would have missed the final. He duly did win to qualify and then capped it off with a good win in the final from seemingly perpetual bridesmaid Kevin Doolan followed by Wethers with Parsons a faller and non finisher. All in all a great nights racing with the finalists in doubt until the last round of heats and some impressive individual rides from some of the less well known riders like Parsons who led the qualifiers, Gathercole, Proctor, and Bujega. Points in riding order Joel Parsons 3,3,3,2,1 = 12 Aaron Summers 0,1,0,0,1 = 2 Cory Gathercole 1,3,3,1,2 = 10 Mathew Wethers 2,3,3,1,2 = 11 Nathan Hedley 3,1,1,2,1 = 8 Chris Ferguson 1,2,1,0,0 = 4 Ashley Watson 0,0,0,-,- = 0 Matt Jones 2,0,1,1,2 = 6 (Replaced Tom Hedley in published line up) Cam Woodward 2,0,2,3,3 = 10 Adam Allott 3,0,2,0,3 = 8 Robert Ksiezak 0,2,0,3,0 = 5 Tyron Proctor 1,1,3,1,1 = 7 Arlo Bujega 1,2,1,2,3 = 9 Rory Schlein 2,3,0,3,3 = 11 Ford Keane 0,1,2,2,0 = 5 Kevin Doolan 3,2,2,3,2 = 12 Hayden Redding (Res) 0,0 = 0 Heat 1 Parsons, Wethers, Gathhercole, Summers 58.19 Parsons in red got to turn one in front and stayed there. Wethers from the outside had a good early battle with Gathercole before claiming second on lap 2 Heat 2 Hedley, Jones, Ferguson, Watson 59.66 A heat containing none of the name riders that was tight in turn 1 but became strung out later on. Hedley got the win largely by virtue of having the inside gate. There was a bit of a hiccup on the back straight with a bit of nudging going on at the back end of the field after some slight lifting (wish I had written down who) but all the riders survived intact. Heat 3 Allott, Woodward, Proctor, Ksiezak (ret) 58.30 Another win from gate one with this time Allott sailing out in front from the off. Ksiezak retired while in third with mechanical gremlins and succeeded in accidentally baulking Proctor but by that stage it was race over anyway so it mattered little. Heat 4 Doolan, Schlein, Bugeja, Keane 58.71 Weird heat this one. Schein from inside Doolan led for 3 and 3/4 laps before slowing coming off turn 4 to allow a gift win to Doolan. Meanwhile out the back Keane had led Bujega for 99% of the race only to have Bugeja third in the last few meters after a good final bend. Heat 5 Parsons, Bugeja, Hedley, Woodward (ret) 59.70 A rerun heat after Hedley got squeezed from both sides going into turn one and came harmlessly off. Second time around Woodward from the very outside had an enormous turns 1 and 2 to blast round the outside to head the field. I thought he would ride away from them but Parsons had other ideas and nipped by Woodward soon after to claim the lead. Woodward then ground to a halt on lap 3 which turned out to be what cost him a place in the final. Heat 6 Schlein, Ferguson, Summers, Redding (Res), Allott (Excl tapes) 58.30 At the first attempt to get them away Allott must have decided the referee was too slow at letting the tapes go up and simply rode straight through them. He was not invited back. That robbed this heat of any interest and it was Schlein at a canter. Heat 7 Gathercole, Ksiezak, Keane, Watson (ret) 59.39 Another super gate from the extreme outside as Gathercole kept the power on and swept round the outside to lead by the back straight and thats where he stayed. He certainly has some ability but consistency seems to be his achilles heel when ever I see him. Ksiezak could make no impression on the leader. Heat 8 Wethers, Doolan, Proctor, Jones 59.62 Yet another fine lap 1 effort from a rider in yellow/black as this time Doolan rocketed into the lead. Wethers tacked onto the back wheel of Doolan and was like a dog with a bone and wouldn't let go for all four laps. In a huge finish Wethers flew off the final bend to throw himself at the line in what was as close to a dead heat as you would ever see. Wethers eventually got the decision by the proverbial bees d***. Doolan wouldn't have been a happy chappy. Heat 9 Parsons, Doolan, Ferguson, Ksiezak (fell) 58.30 After the previus heat I expected Doolan to come out firing and he easily led them out of turn 1 & 2 and I thought to myself "race over". Parsons had other ideas though and got by Doolan on lap 2 and rode away for what looked a comfortable win. Not sure whether to call this one good riding by Parsons or a mental slip up by Doolan. Perhaps 50/50. Parsons was continuing to impress. Heat 10 Proctor, Keane, Hedley, Summers 60.30 Proctor is another lad with some ability but still learning and also lacking in a bit of consistency. All the same a very tidy all the way in front ride to secure the win. Heat 11 Gathercole, Woodward, Jones, Schlein (ef) 60.16 Another fine start from a rider out wide (although not unexpected) as Schlein went right round the outside from the gate and proceeded to pull away. It looked easy for Schlein but on lap 3 to a collective groan from the crowd he slowed and pulled off into the infield with what was later announced as a chain problem. While all that was happening Gathercole had continued his good form to pass Woodward for second which soon became a gifted first. Heat 12 Wethers, Allott, Bugeja, Watson 59.24 Allott wasn't making the same mistake twice in a row and was a bit slow from the tapes with Wethers jumping from the start in the lead. Despite a few exploratory peeps up the inside of Wethers second placed Allott couldn't get by and Wethers held on for a good win. Heat 13 Schlein, Parsons, Proctor, Redding (Res - f excl), Watson (DNS) 59.65 A rerun heat that did Parsons a big favour. At the first running after a very gutsy first turn by Parsons cutting back between riders to claim second he then fell and remounted and resumed racing well behind the others only to have Redding get some unexpected drive in turn 1 & 2 and take what looked a nasty fall. After a few minutes he was able to get up and walk away although obviously a bit shaken. In the 3 man rerun Schlein did as he pleased. Heat 14 Ksiezak, Bugeja, Jones, Summers 61.66 Another race where one of the lesser lights had a very good ride, This time it was Ksiezaks turn to make it look easy from a terrier like Bugeja who was nipping at his heels for much of the journey. Heat 15 Doolan, Hedley, Gathercole, Allott No time Doolan very easily from gate 1 with Allott surprisingly well back with no immediately obvious problem that I could see. Heat 16 Woodward, Keane, Wethers, Ferguson 60.11 Woodward repeated Doolans effort from the previous heat with an easy win from gate 1. Keane and Wethers were having a nice tussle behind though with Wethers having a minor moment mid race allowing Keane to grab second. Heat 17 Allott, Jones, Parsons, Keane (ret) 59.66 Parsons led for nearly all four laps before coming off on turn 4 the last time around. Allott was happy to take the win with Parsons pushing home for a point after Keane had retired earlier. Parsons missed a great opportunity to head the qualifiers although in the end it didn't matter as he qualified first on a count back. Heat 18 Woodward, Doolan, Summers, Watson (DNS) 59.10 Gate four was being kind tonight as Doolan yet again shot off the line from out wide to head Woodward. Woodward was having none of it though and slipped up the inside of Doolan later on lap 1. Doolan had a couple of very "UnDoolan" like rides on the night by getting passed after being in the lead which cost him a couple of extra points. Just before the finish line the hard chasing Doolan appeared to slow which I can only assume was due to some sort of mechanical problem. Heat 19 Bugeja, Gathercole, Proctor, Ferguson (f rem) 60.79 Bugeja's turn !! He had been threatening in his previous ride to do something special and this time he made no mistake. It was the best I have ever seen him ride. Gathercole from gate 1 would have been disappointed not to do better but it was his inconsistency problem catching him out again I think. Heat 20 Schlein, Wethers, Hedley, Ksiezak 57.83 Who would have thought Schlein would reach his last ride needing to win to make the final ? He was in no mood to take any prisoners and led easily from start to finish. Wethers had a bit of trouble passing Hedley for second but by that stage Schlein was long gone. Final Sclein (white), Doolan (blue), Wethers (yellow/black), Parsons (red - fell) No time Schlein was all class again and he was untroubled after a great gate and run into turn 1 despite Doolan trying as hard as he could to catch him. On his 2004 British form Schlein should have won the title fairly easily and despite his trials and tribulations in the early heats he was simply too good when it mattered. Parsons spoiled his nights work by falling again coming out of turn 4, his third fall in as many heats (if you include a rerun heat) which would have disappointed him. Doolan was as always, great value for money, never giving up and simply beaten by a better rider on the night. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable nights racing and what looked a good surface that held up well on what must have been a nightmare day weather wise for the track staff. Roll on the Oz champs !!
