time for the english grand prix...

This is NOT knocking Cardiff in any way shape or form.

The Grand Prix series in currently nine rounds, including the British Grand Prix at Cardiff, but how about ten rounds with a specific English Grand Prix on one of our permanent tracks?

The Swedes have both a Swedish Grand Prix and the Scandinavian Grand, while Poland has the Polish Grand Prix and the European Grand Prix. How about the United Kingdom having the British Grand Prix and the English Grand Prix?

It would balance the ratio of permanent to temporary tracks and - in addition - a rota of tracks could host the grand prix.

Any thoughts?

Makes you wonder. Suppose there may fears that the attendance for Cardiff could be affected with an alternative to go to. I can understand Poland getting an extra GP but it's surely not the same with Sweden. :(

Mr Tsunami

I cannot think that a specifically designated English Grand Prix would cannibalise the attendence at the British Grand Prix in Cardiff. After all, the United Kingdom is a reasonably affluent country, especially in comparison to Poland which already has two grands prix.

As I see it, Eastbourne and Poole did a very good job with the Speedway World Cup, while Coventry has already hosted grands prix.

I am not sure about the structure of the promotion of the British Grand Prix - is it promoted by the BSPA as a whole? If this is so, it could provide a stumbling block to a second grand prix.

Thing is with the crowd that Cardiff attracts (45K+) can't see everyone getting into Poole/Eastbourne/Ipswich/Arena Essex/Oxford or any other stadium for that fact within the UK

So if there was another venue there would be some that would like to attend both (like Tabby, Tina & Myself :approve: ) and the ones that couldn't get tickets could then go to Cardiff, although Cardiff is a 4hr drive from Dover I love it, if for arguments sake the British Grand Prix was being held at Belle Vue it wouldn't stop me going all that way to watch the GP & if Mark was it then that would ice the cake so to speak :approve: He didn't do anything within the GP series this year but everyone still cheered him on and he still smiled at the end of it :approve:

I believe there is an general FIM rule that restricts each country to one GP per year in each motorcycle discipline. That's why the Gothenburg and Bydgoszcz GPs are officially the Scandinavian and European respectively.

In addition, with the exception of regional GPs, I think GPs must carry the title of their host federation - 'Great Britain' in the case of the ACU.

I therefore think an English GP wouldn't be allowed on both counts.

I think there need to be less GPs rather than more. They should just stick with the prestige events with perhaps 1 or 2 rotating around the smaller countries.

Britain, Denmark, Poland, Sweden, Czech Republic, possibly Germany, and Norway/Finland/Slovenia/Italy. The series should only go to more than six rounds if these are held outside Europe (e.g. Australia or US).

Why not a Welsh GP?! :P

I had to say it!!

Personally, I think it's a great idea.

You are so right. Come on fellow Englanders! You can't have it both ways a British GP and then an English GP. You're giving our Celtic cousins bloody good evidence that we are indeed arrogant.:D

Have to say I wouldn't be interested in another GP in Britain. I go to Cardiff every year because it is special, it is a superb stadium with a great atmosphere inside and outside.

If there was another GP at say Coventry or Poole, it would look quite crappy in comparison, but then there will always be those who could even opt for a cheaper GP and take people away from Cardiff. Then everyone's a loser.

Anyhow, if I was to go to another GP outside Cardiff (which I have before - Czech 03), I'd choose to go abroad. With cheap flights and cheaper accomodation, the cost would not be that much different for me going to Poole or Coventry (and no disrespect to these fine English places but Copenhagan, Gothenburg or Prague would be my preferred pick any day of the week)

It's only fair ... they're happy to have a Welsh Assembly when they want their own laws and a British Parliament when they want handouts and subsidies to pay for it ;)

Bit of politics eh? :unsure:B)

It must be a cushy number being a Scottish or Welsh MP, that's for sure. Nearly all your responsibilites devolved, but a nice comfy seat in London for you to sit on, a fat salary and an even fatter expenses cheque to get by on.

Berwick at war with Russia? Another legend I'm afraid.

According to the legend, this began because Berwick, being officially of the kingdom of England, but not in it, was always mentioned separately in laws and proclamations. The Crimean War was declared on behalf of Britain and Berwick, but, so the story still goes, the Peace of Paris in 1856 missed out Berwick.

'Peterborough' in The Daily Telgraph in December 1935 recorded it was in October 1914 that the British Foreign Office hastily signed a peace treaty with Tsarist Russia tidying up this oversight. Unfortunately this was not true, the Foreign Office consulted in the 1930s and in 1965 could find no trace of this 'treaty.' Also, the documents relating to the declaration and peace do not separately mention Berwick, because by the Wales and Berwick Act of 1746 all references to England in Acts of Parliament were deemed to include Berwick, and Wales.

But the story still persists, as only a good urban legend can, and Berwickers would not have it any other way.

But are you from Berwick?  :)

Goodness gracious no

Sorry I read your original message as

After all, it used to be treated separately to England and Scotland is technically still at war with Russia as a result!

I think you might have left an and or therefore out of your sentence - sorry I hate being pedantic.

You just amaze me with some of the info you come out with sometimes Kevin.

Rico
