david_s
Did anyone see yesterday's daily mail, there was a letter from a speedway fan, C J Hart, recalling the story of Brian Crutcher (50 years ago) narrowly missing out on the World title to Ronnie Moore in front of an estimated 90,000 crowd at Wembley Stadium. There are a couple of pictures of Brian Crutcher in action for the Wembley Lions and also in a Poole Pirates race jacket. He must have been quite a speedway rider ! stevehone
Cyril J Hart could be classed as a bit more than a fan....

david_s
I have re-read the article and it mentions that Cyril J Hart was a sports reporter who first saw Brian 'Nipper' Crutcher riding a practice track just outside Bournemouth in 1949. Apparently Messrs Crutcher, Hart and Dave Lanning were meeting up last night to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wembley final.
norbold
90,000 ... jesus , if only we could get crowds like that now Who is Cyril J Hart anyways <{POST_SNAPBACK}> we had crowds like that back in 1981 get reading the veteran speedway magazines <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think you mean we had one crowd like that in 1981 - the World Final. Brian Crutcher was a great rider, but, somehow, I always feel responsible for his retirement as he retired the same day that I attended my first-ever speedway meeting! I've often wondered if it was me!!!
Deano
Yes I read it myself, made interesting reading. Felt rather proud to see such an article in one of the more respected (if there is such a thing) tabloids.
Old Saint
Brian Crutcher was indeed an excellent rider Watched him many times riding for the equally excellent Southampton side.
Canadian Star
Just about everyone agree's that the 1981 world final at Wembley was the greatest world final ever. I know cause i was there ! There aint no doubt it was a terrific meeting i still have the tape and when i get depressed about the weather i watch it and recall an incredible occasion before an incredible crowd. Question is what happened after that, and what can we learn from it, why are we unable to attract anywhere that number of people to a meeting nowadays ?
