KevH
Question,Who are the 2 Crusaders featured in the programme for the 75th Anniversary of British Speedway at Rye House? I think gate 4 is pretty easy, but gate 2 is a bit of a problem, any ideas? Have not looked out the old programme yet so still guessing myself. Neck on the line time - I reckon gate 4 is Graham Banks but I'm unsure about gate 2 too. I stand to be corrected on Banksie though.

shazzybird
Just phoned "Auntie" and she says that it's Graham Banks in 4 and Possibly Alan Kite in 2. I would have said Uncle Ted cos when I was 7 (all those years ago) I thought every rider was Uncle Ted lol

Grachan
I'm working in Sandwich for a couple of weeks and staying in Canturbury. Never went to the Speedway. The only time I was here before was in a time that I never went to speedway, although I did go to the Cricket ground and, as I'm staying close to it, I took a wander up the other day and had a look. Brought back some wonderful memories of my dad and of people like Alan Knott, Derek Underwood & Asif Iqbal. No interest in Cricket apart from that though! I hope to take a look at where the track was while I'm here. I saw where it was on a map at the hotel, and on a newer map it says Kingsmead Redevelopment area. What is there now? Is there any sign of the stadium remaining or has it all been built over now? I can't let the two weeks pass without a look though.
shazzybird
The whole of the area where the stadium was has changed totally if you head for kingsmean road just off the sturry road roundabout (sainsburys and kingsmead swimming pool on the left as you drive down and opposite in between the pair is a patch of roughland nothing on it! thats where the stadium was
Grachan
Cheers. Looks like I'll have to use my imagination a bit then! A shame if it's just wasteland that they couldn't keep it going longer, although I don't know the history of why it closed etc.

Grachan, walk down this roadway with the river on your right for about 300 meters and you will then be on the site of the old track. Last time I looked (about a year ago) you could still see the layout of the stadium and track.
Grachan
Thanks. I'll take a look at the weekend. I did try to find it on the way home from work last night without any map or directions, but didn't find it. I did find a road called Havelock Road though! It turned out I was the wrong side of the main road. Next time I shall have my little Canturbury tourist map and your directions. Thanks again. Grachan
Went to the track Saturday morning. The road was locked by a construction company, but it was pretty easy to get in by climbing over the fence at the end of the sports field. There's not much there, but you can still clearly make out the layout of the stadium and shape of the track. It was fascinating for me, as someone who never went there when it was a speedway stadium, to walk the track and stand on the banks trying to imagine all that might have gone on before. Does anyone know how I can get hold of some videos from the old days? It would be amazing to see that patch of wasteland spring into life.
Marty
Hi Grachan, is there any chance of you or someone getting any pictures of how it is now. Would be great to see before it is completely gone. Cheers Mark
