spin king
I remember the old second halves and honestly miss them, you used to see young raw talent, I don't quite remember all the names but do recall an Australian called Hitchcock, who looked good who we signed and loaned out to Workington who struggling in the old National League, he wasn't there long and went home. I am not sure but I think he finished up going to prison in Oz for murder but my memory is pretty hazy. Other that I remember are Phil White who had hair down to his backside, he eventually graduated to the full side, Rob Woffiden, Neil Collins and a guy called Chris Bevan. Sweet Memories
sjw ministerofport
I think there was a guy named Errol Brook at Cradley he would fly from the start but got cheered if he got around the first bend safely. He was a real trier and i don't mean to disrespect him.
Guest Steve Dixon
Remember Chris Bevan pretty well, he had second half rides at most the northern tracks i think. Remember Dave Butt, a great little rider did second halves at Hyde Road, think he got one or two second div rides, not sure but great to watch, think he was about 3 foot tall. norbold
John Holder at West Ham. If he finished less than half a lap behind everyone else we saw it as a victory. Â We also had two young second halfers called Dave Jessup and Barry Thomas. I wonder whatever happened to them. I wonder whatever happened to them. John Holder...ah remember him well! Real nice bloke. He became Roland Pollard's stepfather through marriage I believe. Roly was a more than useful second halfer / reserve at NL level particularly at Hackney. As for John himself, last time I met up with him, which was some years ago now, he was still racing motorbikes competing in vintage road / circuit racing around Europe.   Jack Bibby was something of a "second half favourite" at Crayford and who could ever forget Roy Barwick and his seemingly "telescopic" left leg in those London Road days. Richard Willis, Richard Newnham and Tony Brooks are three more tthat spring to mind.  In the early NL days at Hackney, following Len Silver selling out to start up his Silverski operation, "Veggie" better known as Steve Verge and, of course, the legendary Mick Fitzpatrick (sponsored by Stan Flashman - "Ticket Broker") were crowd favourites. And then there was dear old John Gazey...living in sunnier climes now i do believe AND a member of this forum! Memories! Robyn1972
Remember Veggie well - he was a laugh! Â Last time I heard from Roly he'd given speedway up for good he assured me, and was doing well running his own business. Have lost contact with him over the past few years though so if anyone knows how to find him now.......! Last address I had was in Beckenham I think. Â We had some cracking junior sides at Ipswich - Darren Fitch, Shaun Tacey, Lol Hare etc are three that spring to mind from about 1991......good times! Shame that both Darren and Lol have had to give up through injuries, and Shaun went over to the Dark Side.....King Lynn!
Bryn
And what a "holy" alliance we once had between King's Lynn and Ipswich with the formation of the Anglian Angels junior side feature Matthew, Mark Luke AND John! *  i.e. MATTHEW Read MARK Thompson LUKE Clifton and JOHN Curtis  Edited August 22, 2004 by Bryn
KevH
We also had two young second halfers called Dave Jessup and Barry Thomas. I wonder whatever happened to them. To be fair though Norbold, they were both recognised team members at Eastbourne and Canterbury weren't they?

Bryn
Not sure if John actually married Roly's mum if you see what I mean!

Robyn1972
Not sure if John actually married Roly's mum if you see what I mean! He did Bryn! And no, before you say it, Roly WASN'T a bridesmaid!!!!!

I saw their first ever race in the second half at West Ham. Jessup was 15; Thomas was 16. Although Thomas won, I thought Jessup looked to be the better prospect. And so it proved...or did it? boywonder
Does anybody know of a guy called BILLY TIPPING who was a Londoner who did second halves at Mildenhall in the late 70's??? Â I was impressed with his pretty immaculate machinery and leathers with sponsorship by "Jet Records" which was owned by Sharon Osbourne's dad Don Arden. They had artists like ELO, Black Sabbath, Gary Moore and Lynsey De Paul?! signed to them so Billy seemed very rock and roll to me. Â But sadly Billy didn't seem to make it. Where is now I wonder? Â Oh yes and Dingle Brown, now of the Dons, used to 2nd half at Crayford about the same time and owned a car breakers somewhere I think. iris123
Steve Hone Where was Honey second halving for you Iris The way i read it "in their second halves" didn`t necessarily mean they had to be one of the local riders.Steve Hone rode a few times at least at Plough Lane in the second half as did a certain Hubbard.I was one of the people who stayed for the second half almost without fail as i found them very entertaining
shazzybird
Just phoned a "Certain Hubbard" who assures me he never rode 2nd halves at Plough Lane as Cyril and him didn't get on too well
