Kevin Meynell
Tyburn Gallows real name was Raymond Humphries he changed it by deed pole as he was the last apprentice hangman in Britain at Tyburn. What a crazy story:blink: .... cool though Whether there's an element of truth to the story I don't know, but he certainly wasn't the last apprentice hangman at Tyburn. Executions stopped being held there at the end of the 18th century, and the area is now Marble Arch.
norbold
No-one said he was the last apprentice hangman at Tyburn. But it certainly was said at the time that he was the last apprentice hangman in Britain. Well said by him anyway! I believe we've been through all this before and we didn't come to any conclusion one way or the other.... Ah yes, just found these from a previous thread: 'Just another little contribution to the Tyburn Gallows debate and whether he really was an assistant hangman or not. I came across this information on another web site: "In 1964 the last two men in Britain were hanged for murder. The following year, parliament voted to abolish capital punishment, with overwhelming public support. The most famous public hangman, Albert Pierrepoint, had already retired with nearly 700 executions to his name. The passage of time has since seen the demise of every executioner and their assistants (Pierrepoint died in 1982). By 1994 Syd Dernley was the only former hangman alive in the UK." If Tyburn Gallows died after 1994 it would suggest that he never really was an assistant hangman (or, of course, that the article on the web is wrong!). Have we established when Tyburn went to the great scaffold in the sky yet?' And 'Found this on a site about the english hangmen Assistant executioners. There were many more names on the Home Office list of approved executioners over the period covered but they only acted as assistants and are, thus, not always recorded. Amongst the better known of these was Sid Dernley who assisted at 25 executions between 1949 and 1954 and also wrote a book called "The Hangman's Tale" detailing his experiences. Sid Dernley died in 1996.' The first contribution was from me; the second from kiwi. Edited July 13, 2004 by norbold

shazzybird
No-one said he was the last apprentice hangman at Tyburn. err,i think you want to read Shazzy`s post that K.M has quoted and it says "the last apprentice hangman at Tyburn Ok smarty pants Iris (sorry Norbold I did say it as I must of misunderstood what I was told (again)) Apparently as the story goes he changed his name by deed pole to Tyburn Gallows because he was the last apprentice hangman in Britain and Tyburn was one of the most infamous gallows in the country. Tyburn/Raymond call him what you like, he was obviously proud of the fact that this was his chosen career if he wanted to tell the "story" then sobeit at the end of the day whether he was making it up or not that was what we were told and that is what we believe. My Dad was his mechanic at Canterbury and he said he was a very lively character but really didn't think he told little fibs then again why would he have to as there are so many people on here willing to correct anything that anyone ever writes surely he would be found out

King Jamie
Alan Hartley - Bengt Mudegaard Alan Hartley was an accountant who, i believe, tried to hide his 'other job' from his main employers. he still floats around in second halves on his vintage machine and ive even had the privilege of meeting him (although i'm not famous enough to get an introduction!) also, a while back (Powderhall days), i seem to remember Mike Lewthwaite going under a false name in some Scottish Junior meeting (or whatever it was!). someone more knowledgeable than me will tell you what his 'new handle' was.
