Great Pictures... many many happy memories.

Especially like the picture of simmo on the centre green, cos it shows the fourth bend stand where I used to stand. One of the most precious places in this world, that sadly is no longer with us :sad:

Talking of Hackney (rather than "that lot" from SW19!) one of my abiding 'off track' memories of Waterden Road - apart from dear old Snowy's bacon sarneys in the Vic Harding lounge after meetings, was catching up with Mike Gerrie each week. Now I know his son Alisdair used to be a member of this forum (not sure if he still is) but I'm sure he won't mind me telling you a bit about his dad. It makes me laugh when i read all the whinges and moans on forums such as these for, I'd say to people who post regularly in such a way, put yourself in Mike's place. He is one of the most avid speedway supporters I've ever come across - and he's NEVER seen any of the countless meetings he's attended! He explained to me that, as a very small baby, soome sort of disease made him go totally blind. That didn't stop him thoroughly enjoying the sport, and being very knowledgeable about it too. Great sense of humour with it - once asked me to ask the female serving behind the Burger King counter at a motorway services if she fancied a blind date! :D Hope he's still going strong.

I had the pleasure of bumping into Mike about 18 months in Loughton, which I think is where he now lives. A truly remarkable guy who has such a fantastic sence of humour! Correct me if I am wrong but, did Mike receive the supporter of the year award at one of the Hackney end of season bashes? The old mind seems to be losing some of it's memory cells of late, but I suppose this happens when you reach 35, well so Bryn tells me anyway......

My memories of Waterden Road are hearing good old Arfer every week walking round the stadium selling the Speedway Mail, buying memorabillia from the great track shop on the first bend. Reading the excellent Kestrel News done by Bryn every week. I found some old copies of the Kestrel News the other day and with it was a similar publication from that lot in SW19 as Bryn calls em called the Dons Digest. But I seem to remember Bryn leaving Hackney and working for that lot in SW19 in 1991 as PRO and writing the Dons Digest!!!!!!!!

I went to every meeting at the Wick in 1996 when the team were called the London Lions and thought the promotion tried hard with ideas like Leo the Lion the team mascot and the nice birds on the centre green holding up numbers on cards at the start of every heat a la rounds in boxing.

Hopefully the old London Cup could be resurrected one day???

Hopefully, but where in London could a new track come from to race Wimbledon?

Walthamstow's about the only place that's still got a suitable stadium and there's not much chance of a revival there I wouldn't have thought.

It's all very sad...

Well Norbold why couldnt they have a one off London Cup meeting at Plough Lane at the end of this season with Wimbledon using former riders Kelvin Tatum, Ray Morton along with their CL team and Hackney using Moggo and Chris Louis along with other CL riders. I am sure the place would be packed out if they advertised it enough. How about it Mr # Name Removed #???

The suggestion links in with Norbolds other thread about why people don`t go any more.Hackney are no more and probably the vast majority of Hackney fans don`t go any more.To form a team in name only wouldn`t attract all those fans back for one meeting and regular fans would know it as a sham team.Wimbledon done it before with a Wembley team and it didn`t attract loads of Wembley fans(not many more than were already comming, any way)
