paulboy
Sheffield, Swindon and Mildenhall for me.
Shoddy
Have liked a few, think Sheffield is a good racing track now (certainly compared to some polished rubbish that's around) and I saw some good meetings at Cradley and King's Lynn. Exeter is a fantastic track when the home riders are behind - Richard Green at full pelt around the boards was an unbelievable sight! All time favourite for me would have to be Odsal though - the only good thing to ever come from Bradford - apart from me of course!!! The 1985 World Final was fantastic and the 1990 meeting was an all time great final (if not, in my opinion, the standard - sorry Per!) I saw an old video of a league match the other day and in one race all four riders did a full two laps side by side without any of them having to back off - which is interesting as one of them was Thorpy!!! For new Hull fans that was back in the days when he didn't hit the tapes every other race! Certainly can't think of any circuit in this country where you could do that now??? fireblade
Boston, the old Mildenhall, Halifax, Trelawny, Leicester, old Weymouth (haven't been to the new one, Birmingham (Perry Barr) all good tracks. I have never taken to Coventry or Rye House, but each to their own. Of todays tracks Sheffield, Swindon, King's Lynn (when its not slick) take some beating for racing. pizza the hut
When prepared properly Swindon was always great and consistantly good for racing - shame about the facilites Always loved Belle Vue.- sadly under the late Mr Bamforth it deteriorated to a sad old place. norbold
As a former New Cross and West Ham supporter, it pains me to say that I would have to go along with Hackney as the track that produced the best racing! It always semed to be well prepared and there was lots of passing. Mind you, all tracks seemed to be better prepared in the 60s...or is that the old rose tinted nostalgia spectacles again? ruckerroo
Although only open for a shortish time the racing at trelawney was fantastic every time i was lucky enough to go there.
New Jersey Cuda
My favourite memory of the old New Hammond Beck track at Boston was the world's most rickety ladder leading up to the Ref's box, which seemed to be hung underneath the roof of the big stand there. I know I was only a youngster when I used to watch Boston there and saw the ladder every week, but even now, when I turn right out of our road and can see the Empire State Building over in the distance, I'm *still* convinced that that ladder to the Ref's box could reach about half-way up the ESB! Always loved our away trips to Exeter myself, even though it generally meant a hammering, and in latter years I've enjoyed going to Buxton for both the views all around you, the beautiful drive up there, and the fact that it just 'feels' like a Conference league track ought to feel! boywonder
The old Boston track always used to smell really bad. Did they water it with the water they boiled the hamburgers in? Spoilt a decent arena.
norbold
1. Bob Coles 2. Stan Stevens 3. Preben Eriksen 4. Alan Cowland 5. Kelvin Mullarkey 6. Mick Bates 7. Robert Henry 8.Tony Dart Maybe not the fastest ever team, but they've charisma and bottle and that makes them the best for me. Stan Stevens. Now you're talking! Brilliant. BrizHeathen
This is a tough one, I've seen fantastic racing at so many tracks. So based on my overall impression I'll say; Cradley..Of course Belle Vue - Hyde Road Wimbledon - a la 70's/early 80's Newcastle Motordrome-NSW = When prepared correctly Best speedway stadium The Brisbane Ekka
stevehone
Canterbury (pre-87) Exeter Wimbledon (up to 1991) Halifax Belle Vue (Hyde Road)
howling gorgon
Other than the mecca that is Brandon I always enjoyed trips to Cradley & Kings Lynn, although both stadiums were utter dumps. Have not been to KL for years though so it may have improved (!)
stevehone
Have not been to KL for years though so it may have improved (!) there's probably been a lot of changes since your last visit... money has actually been spent!!! the track has improved recently, and coupled with the stadium improvements it's not a bad place to go. i go mainly for the company but we do see some good racing
Yorkshire Grit
Though it pains me to admit it, Hyde Road. The B.L.R.C. was the end of season mecca for most fans. The funfair and the go-karts- sadly missed as is the stadium. From Hell, Hull and Halifax. heard it before? The Yorkshire tracks have to be some of the best. Old and new alike? Beowulf
Has to be Odsal for me Just loved the racing there, and for some reason there was a kind of special atmosphere - even when it was half empty Hated the place! No atmosphere, just a huge hole in the ground, invariably bloody freezing, often see clouds at eye level (ok exaggeration!), bends 1/2 different from 3/4. Plus they had riders who couldn't ride anywhere else eg. Thorp, Wilson, Smith, Havelock etc etc. Rubbish centre green announce who couldn't 'announce' 90% of foreigners names. Plus of course every time we went there we got an absolute tonking Mind you the Odsal chippy was great! Which other chippy in the country doesn't sell pies? Unique! Lets see now, a track & stadium worthy of the name, flat out racing 4 a breast seating aplenty, fantastic viewing throughout or alternatively a fleapit of a trick track with a bloke in a fleabitten dog costume mincing about on the centre green & where you have the pleasure ( ) of being surrounded by a bunch of linguistically challenged inbreds situated in a place which Michael Palin described as the place where the tube would be placed if Britain needed an enema!! sandman
odsal produced one of the best world finals as far as pure racing, in my opinion..
Beowulf
All of those good points didn't stop it from closing did it Gorgon? (no dis-respect Bradford fans) As far as Wolves trick track is concerned, well what it means is that you have to use your brains and throttle control instead of just keeping the throttle on 'open'. Something for the more intelligent supporter to appreciate I think. which is why you don't! Anyway how would any Coventry fan be able to recognise good racing. If you've never seen it you wouldn't know what it was!
