I think in the 50s and 60s there was a speedway football team with players from several tracks, and that they use to play for charity.

I think that the captain was Wimbledon's Ron Howe, but no doubt Norbold will correct me on that!

I can correct you on the spelling of Howe - it should be How - but not on whether he was captain or not. There certainly was a team called the Speedway Riders XI who played charity matches as iris says, but I can't remember who played for them or who the captain was.

Thinking about it Sutton was a bit of a Kiwi outpost as Ronnie Moore,Briggo,Geoff Mardon and Trevor Redmond at one time all shared a house there.Don`t know if one or more of them was involved in the formation but would guess it some Dons riders were involved

Mid to late seventies the Oldbury Lions cycle speedway club organised a game involving riders and others associated with our great sport.

It was actually played at Oldbury's ground.

The likes of John Davis, Dave Lanning, Bruce Penhall, Michael Lee, etc etc.

There was a nobbly knees comp...but I have no idea who performed on the pitch.

I do remember that the Americans were crap...no great surprise there.

Still got some pictures in my scrap book...I think they appeared in the speedway mail.

It was SWAPA (Speedway Writers and Photographers Association) who played a few matches for charity including this one at Oldbury. Came across the programme recently and had a chuckle or two at the pen-pics!!

I had played in the morning for my Sandwell League side then borrowed a set of the club kit and headed for Oldbury to play in this one alongside Pat Foley, Rob Bishop, Phil Rising, Mike Partick etc against the riders.

Also remember playing in a match at Port Vale's ground played in a blizzard at one stage with the former West Brom keeper John Osborne in goals --remember turning round to see the goals empty and Ossie sitting in the stand puffing on his pipe!! Happy memory though of getting a hat-trick in this game --my claim to football fortune scoring one on a Football Laegue ground!!

A riders eleven took on a supporters eleven at Meggetland, Edinburgh on 22 April 1978.

Among the riders were Mick Newton, Rob Hollingworth, Mal Chambers, Benny Rourke, Brian Collins, Alan Bridgett, Steve McDermott, Dave Trownson and Alan Morrison.

I'm looking at the photo of the supporters team and the only one I recognise is Norrie Tait, currently the programme stall man at Armadale.

Apparently a crowd of 325 turned up. Not bad.

Currently on eBay:

TV Stars v. Speedway Riders' X1

"Programme from the Charity match played at Hornchurch Stadium,Upminster on 22/3/64.

T.V Stars include;Jess Conrad,Mike and Bernie Winters and Bernard Bresslaw.I wouldn't know where to start with the Speedway Stars,so I won't bother!!"

The seller is obviously not a fan.

If someone buys it we can find out who the speedway team was. Any offers?
