Firstly the title needs adjusting it's CANTERBURY not CATERBURY!

Ross used to stay with my grandparents when he rode at Canterbury and even now my grandparents have passed on my Uncle now lives in their house that bedroom will always be known as Ross Gilbertsons room.

Ross Gilbertson was my first "speedway hero". I can fully understand why Ms Shazzy, that the spare room where Ross stayed has kept it's name. Ross was such a gentleman after the meeting with the fans. He would always autograph my programme week after week when he rode for Romford. Shame he left and went to Canterbury then I think he moved on to Eastbourne.

When I went to Weymouth for the Vic Harding Memorial Trophy I met up with another former Bomber Mike Vernam. Funny how you still get a buzz when you meet these riders today! He was saying that he bumped in to Phil Woodcock in Bournemouth a couple of weeks before. I know quite a few riders who rode for the Bombers lived in that part of the world, the few that spring to mind are Tony George, Bob Coles, Ian Gills-think he was Bristol area- and of course the late great Kevin Holden.

Just think if Wally Mawdsley, Pete Lansdale and Maurice Morley had not got Romford of the ground, would I have ever met all the people I know today? And of course there’s the Mrs and kids as well that come into this category via Hackney. So I guess these three guys have influenced my life big time!

To my knowledge there has never been a Romford re-union, but if anyone wants to get the riders together count me in!

Just wondering if any forum members had the pleasure of visiting Brooklands! it was great for viewing the speedway (Just a wall between you and the track)! I seem to remember a Czech Rider putting either him or his bike or both over the wall! In these days of air fences, what are your views on masonary!

Bought a Speedway Star Parade annual from 1970 at car boot fair this morning and has a report and article on getting track ready for opening meeting in 1969 it says they got everything ready in nine days under the watchful eye of Maurice Morley does anybody remember this.

Yes, they had to move quickly as the original plan was to run at Rochester but they were unable to obtain planning permission. Rochester Council itself had granted permission, but this was overturned by Kent County Council. By the time this happened the season had already started. In fact, the Bombers had already raced two away matches as Rochester. That was why the promotion team of Wally Mawdsley and Pete Lansdale with Maurice Morley as manager had to move quickly.

The incredible built-in-nine-days Romford story was in fact covered in some depth in issue 1 of Backtrack.

What a unique place Brooklands used to be (until it was replaced by a housing estate, which it still is).

Apart from the aforementioned Ross G, let me throw some more names into the ring to get those nostagic thoughts whirring even further...Phil Woodcock, Kevin Holden, Brian Foote, Frank Wendon, (the late) Charlie Benham, Colin Sanders, Mike Vernam, Bob Coles, Bruce Edgar, Clark Facey, Ian Gills, Terry Shearer, Ted Spittles (gold leathers & boots), Dene Davies (who has subscribed to Backtrack, top man!).

Wasn't Tony Childs (Hull) given a 'warm' reception there!

Happy days!

Tony Mac
