Great stylist was Denzil. I thought he could´ve gone further than he actually did.

He sure had the talent, but lost his way when Mike Ferreira moved on!

Is there a story there we should know Kevin?

There is a story, but not sure you should know it.:D

Come on Kev, spill the beans...

Oh all right  - nothing special really, just the old story of over indulgence in the old booze and clubs alegedly which had a bit of an adverse effect on his career. While he was under the wing of Ferreira, he was kept on the straight and narrow.

Denzil turned into a bit of a bad boy on a couple occasions he turned up shall we say under the influence. Needless to say the Pits Marshall wouldn't allow him to ride he could of hurt himself and others on the track.

Denzil today lives and works in the Johannesburg area of South Africa. He is now 42 y/o and last rode speedway in the year 2000 when he made a brief return to the sport on a couple of occasions to race at Gerald Richter's Walkerville Speedway.

My main memory of Denzil dates from the time when great efforts were being made to portray him as a Zimbabwean and thus eligible to ride in the old NL as a commonwealth rider - and him wearing a South African (non-eligible) jacket complete with springbok emblem...

My main memory of Denzil was coming back from Rye House with Denzil, Jorge, Dave Mullett, Jamie Luckhurst, Lofty me and my friend all in a Ford Cortina three bikes on a trailer no lights on the tailboard and not getting pulled over by the old bill for overloading  Then there was Deanland excellent place after an Eastbourne meeting if you was ever lucky to go there I'm sure everyone has a memory of it.

when i was a wee boy, i got the chance to go out onto the centre green at Powderhall and present a cheque (or whatever was in the envelope!) to the winner of the 2nd half final. although i was a Monarchs' fan, i secretly wanted Denzil to win cos i thought he was superb - i'm pleased to say my wish was granted as he romped home - ive still got the photo on the house :)

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post here, just joined, after finding this site over the weekend.

I grew up on speedway, Wimbledon, Crayford & Canterbury. My Dad (Darrell Mason) was involved on the PR side of things at all these tracks during the 70's & early 80's.

I'd love to get in touch with Denzil, if anyone has an address.

First met Denzil when he first came over to the UK. I accompanied him along with my Dad, and Maurice Morley to the immigration building in Croydon. Denzil was about 18, I was about 14 and on school holiday.

From what I remember Denzil lived with an uncle in Dartford, but he visited our house several times in the early days.

I was convinced he would become World Champion, maybe I saw him through "rose coloured glasses", but he seemed unbeatable at Kingsmead.

Colin lives in eastbourne and runs the junior track at arlington, he is in the motor trade and well established, He is one of the most helpful guys you could wish to meet. Colin is a true speedway legend as he is 100% behind bringing on young english riders (bridger, kennett) and hosts of other young english riders, they seem to have an affinity with him , Is it true scandinavian countries put money into speedway academies? Colin does it week in week out for the love of it. how many english riders will fall short for the sake of a few grand? do we have to put up with foreign wizkids overshadowing our own talent or will somebody see the light and put proper input into this amazing sport?

Welcome to the forum Kieran, the rumour about Denzil marrying a girl from Eastbourne came from an ex-team mate of his who I will be having words with for getting it wrong  I know a few ex-team mates from Canterbury that have been trying to get in contact with him. An email address would be great if you could pm me the details will pass them on if this is not available can pass you the rider details for Denzil to get into contact.

Loftys younger brother Baz has been trying to get a contact address for him as well.

Thanks for the info, my mum will be pleased! She used to do a collection for his fuel when he rode at Oxford. He was quite shy/embarressed that my mum did it I think. His mum used to write to my mum to thank her on Colins behalf!!

Glad to hear he's still involved, if you see him ask him about his race against Brad Oxley at Reading, no love lost between them! I've never seen punches being thrown whilst racing at full pelt down a straight before or since!!

(Actually it must be a Reading thing as I seem to remember Mitch Shirra jumping off his bike and confronting somebody in the crowd during one meeting too!!)
