  7. MDL Friday 24th April 2015 CITY GEARBOXES Coventry Vikings 18 Belle Vue Colts 18 Unbeaten Belle Vue snatched a MDL point at the 11th hour when Coventry Vikings looked set to start their campaign with a win but home man Danyon Hume hit the deck when on a 3-3 ..but that’s speedway! The Colts lost young Stephen Whitehouse with bike damage when he lifted coming out of the gate in heat 2 somehow missing the other three riders. Conor Dwyer led his side by example with two superb wins before missing the gate out of the graveyard gate 1 in the final race but chased Belle Vue’s Tom Bacon for the four laps as he inflicted the home man’s only defeat of the night. Robert Parker battled hard for the home side and gained a reward winning his last ride whilst Danyon Hume , in for the unavailable Callum Walker who is in Germany for a long track meeting, lost out on points in two rides when falling in point scoring positions. 16 year old local lad Mitchell Beckett made his debut for the Vikings and rode steadily to notch 2 and a bonus and with two Coventry born and bred boys in their side this is pleasing for the club. For the Colts Tom Bacon , ironically a Coventry boy too, top scored with 8 backed up by David Holt with 6 and Sam Darroch , who recovered from a first race fall, to notch 4 and a bonus. 14. COVENTRY stage the first of several Sunday afternoon fixtures this weekend with the Storm taking centre-stage for their 2015 home opener (4pm). Laurence Rogers’ side will be taking on a Birmingham/Cradley Select side in a Challenge match which should produce plenty of competitive action between two well-matched line-ups. This date was to have been used for a league match against Cradley but that meeting will now take place later in the season – giving the City Gearboxes Storm the opportunity for track time ahead of a busy schedule of away matches to come. Having already ridden well to gain a point from their first league match at Cradley last week, they visit Buxton next Sunday (April 26) and also have trips to Mildenhall and Kent in early May. The full Storm team will be on show with Dan Greenwood in particular having made a blistering start to the campaign with high scores in all of his meetings, both for Coventry and in a series of guest appearances elsewhere. The visitors include six riders from the Birmingham and Cradley line-ups plus Buxton’s Adam Extance, and amongst their septet they track the Brummies’ talented reserve youngster Zach Wajtknecht, who scored paid-15 in a home win over Rye House on Wednesday. In addition to the 15-heat match, there is also a Midland Development League challenge plus 125cc demo races – and for the third season running, admission to National League level meetings at Brandon is just £10 for all adults, with all under-16s going free. Rogers said: “We can only take positives from our opening encounter at Cradley where we picked up a valuable league point. “I wanted to start the new home season with a challenge rather than go straight into a league clash, especially with four new riders in our side, and also Cradley would have been missing several riders on Premier League duty. So this was seen as a sensible solution all round.” COVENTRY (from): Luke Crang, Conor Dwyer, Stefan Farnaby, Dan Greenwod, Martin Knuckey, Darryl Ritchings, Rob Shuttleworth. CRADLEY/BIRMINGHAM (from): Harvie Banks, Adam Extance, Nathan Greaves, Luke Harris, Arron Mogridge, Zach Wajtknecht, Matt Williamson.

  22. Peterborough replace Castleford in the MDL A late change to the 2015 Midland Development League sees a return of a junior Peterborough side racing as the Thundercats in place of Castleford Kings , who have withdrawn from the league with immediate effect. The Kings were using the Showground at Peterborough as their home base this year and commenced their season with a 20-16 over 2014 MDL champions Milton Keynes. The fixture list remains as it was for the Kings .The MDL organisers would like to thank the Peterborough promotion for stepping in at short notice to keep the league strength at ten teams. The Thundercats first meeting will be on Sunday 12th April facing Scunthorpe.
