The Tiger Cubs had the individual star of the night in Rye House National League rider Luke Chessell, who went through his three rides unbeaten, but it was the greater strength-in-depth of the Colts which saw them home. Chessell was fastest away in heat 1, with Max Clegg coming through into second place, as David Holt in third ensured that the points were equally divided. 15-year-old Michael Neale took heat two for Belle Vue with teammate Shaun Tedham following him home to give the Colts a four point lead. Chessell took another comfortable win in heat 3 in the fastest time of the match, but again the points were shared as partner Dave Lidgett retired at the back. Clegg anticipated the start brilliantly in heat 4, but had to do it all again as the referee surprisingly called an unsatisfactory start. In the re-run he again made the gate, being joined by teammate Neale for a second 5-1 Holt challenged Chessell strongly on the opening lap of heat 5 before the Tiger Cubs No.1 started to pull away. Tedham tucked in behind Holt to ensure a share of the spoils. The Colts looked set to finish the meeting in style with a 5-1 from their two 15-year-olds, but the unlucky Michael Neale was denied his paid maximum by a broken primary chain on the third lap.
  2. MK Knights race into the Grand Final MK “Alpine Cooling” Knights secured an MDL Grand Final spot with a 26-10 victory over a depleted Long Eaton Invaders who drafted in team manager Steve Cook to make his MDL debut. With Ollie Greenwood on NL duty for parent club Scunthorpe, the Knights brought in namesake Dan Greenwood to join regulars Conor Dwyer, Adam Sheppard & Shaun Tedham. Heat 1 suggested that the meeting could be a tight one, Connor Coles leading Dan Greenwood out of the tapes before Greenwood drove up the inside and secure the 1st of his 3 race wins. Consecutive 5-1’s in the next 3 heats & a 4-2 in heat 5 secured the match win and lifted the Knights 5pts clear at the top of the table with 2 matches remaining. With Grand Final qualification secured for the Knights, it remains to be seen who out of Long Eaton, Mercia Vikings or Belle Vue Colts can grab the remaining spot in the end of season showpiece which will be a 2-legged, home & away final run over the normal 6-heat MDL format Next up for the Knights is their last regular season “home” fixture against Sheffield Tiger Cubs @ Rye House Stadium on Sat 8th Sept following Rye House vs Redcar in the Premier League which starts @ 7:00pm MK Knights Dan Greenwwod 3 3 3 = 9 Adam Sheppard 1 2* 1 = 4+1 Conor Dwyer 2* 3 2 = 7+1 Shaun Tedham 3 2* 1* = 6+2 Long Eaton Invaders Connor Coles 2 X 3 = 5 Steve Cook 0 0 0 = 0 Ben Holloway 1 1 2 = 4 Andy Blackburn 0 1 0 = 1 H1 Greenwood, Coles, Sheppard, Cook 4-2/4-2 66.9secs H2 Tedham, Dwyer, Holloway, Blackburn 5-1/9-3 68.7secs H3 Greenwood, Tedham, Holloway, Cook 5-1/14-4 66.2 H4 Dwyer, Sheppard, Blackburn, Coles (exc 2mins) 5-1/19-5 70.1secs H5 Greenwood, Holloway, Sheppard, Cook 4-2/23-7 67.2secs H6 Coles, Dwyer, Tedham, Blackburn 3-3/26-10 67.9secs www.mkknightsspeedway.co.uk

  10. MK Knights 22 – Scunthorpe Stags 14 ---AMENDED TO 22-9 MK “Alpine Cooling” Knights continue to press for an MDL Grand Final place with their 2nd win in 4 days against a spirited Scunthorpe Stags side. Although run at Owlerton Stadium, this was officially a home fixture for the Knights. No.1 Ollie Greenwood returned to the side after missing out on the 17-19 win at Belle Vue earlier in the week to team up with Conor Dwyer & Shaun Tedham who both scored 6pts at Kirkmanshulme Rd and Adam Sheppard, who also missed out on the trip to Manchester! Heat 1 saw the Stags take a 4-2 lead with Danny Phillips taking Conor Dwyer on the final turn of lap 4 after Dwyer looked to have the heat win in his pocket! Ollie Greenwood raced to an easy heat 2 win, shared 3-3 and then Dwyer raced clear from the start in heat 3 with Shaun Tedham in 3rd to bring the scores level with a 4-2 Greenwood & Sheppard put the home side in front for the first time in the next heat with another 4-2 Heat 5 clinched the meeting for the Knights, Dwyer racing clear of Connor Coles with Sheppard holding David Holt at the back Then coming out of turn 2 on the final lap, Coles appeared to lose power, allowing Sheppard thru into 2nd, before picking up speed again! As they entered the 3rd turn, Sheppard held his nerve with Holt trying to take him on the inside & Coles on the outside! A 5-1 heat advantage for the Knights With victory secured, heat 6 produced another thrilling finish! Greenwood raced clear from the start while Tedham lifted at the gate and dropped to 4th. As he chased Martin Wrathall into lap 3, Wrathall locked up with Tedham close behind who shut-off to avoid a collision! Having lost momentum, Shaun tried one last time on lap 4 and finally passed Wrathall on the line to clinch a 4-2 heat advantage and a 22-14 meeting result! 12. Knights put Colts to the sword MK Knights climbed to the top of the Midland Development League table on Monday night with a 17-19 away victory at top of the table Belle Vue Colts in Manchester, their 4th away victory from 5 matches! On a warm night in Manchester, the Knights went ahead in heat 2 when Shaun Tedham & guest rider Lee Geary took advantage of home rider Michael Neale falling to take the race with a 1-5 points advantage! After 4 races, the Knights lead the Colts 11-13 but a 4-2 heat win by the home side levelled the scores at 15-15 with 1 race to go! As the final heat started, the MK duo of Dwyer & Tedham leapt to the front and looked to be heading to a maximum heat advantage until home rider Neale took a heavy fall into the safety fence, causing the race to be stopped and re-run! As the tapes went up for the re-start, Dwyer again reached the 1st bend in front with Colts Tom Woolley close behind and Tedham tucking in for the match winning point in 3rd The win puts MK top of the table on 12pts from 8 matches with Long Eaton & Belle Vue joint 2nd on 11pts, having ridden 10 & 9 matches each www.mkknightsspeedway.co.uk Belle Vue Colts 1. 13. 18th August 2012 Clegg and Kirby impress MIDLAND DEVELOPMENTLEAGUE SCUNTHORPE STAGS 16 BELLE VUE COLTS 20 On Friday night theScunthorpe Stags side lost their Midland Developmentleague encounter with the Belle Vue Colts 16-20. The Stags were reducedto three riders before the meeting had even started with the non-show of onerider but Adam Kirby led the side admirably scoring ten points and only beingdefeated by the Saints’ Max Clegg who racked up a nine point maximum forthe Colts. After the meeting Stags’ TeamManager Richard Hollingsworth said “It is one of the nuances of the MDLthat a Scunthorpe rider has to ride foranother club in this league. However, I do understand it. I’ve been trying to give three Saints riders outings in the second halfrecently and had to sacrifice race points to get two of them in the sameside. Tonight none of the three were available but Belle Vue have beenusing Max all season so it’s only fair they are allowed to continue doingso. “The important thing is thathe is getting laps when he wants them. He was outstanding tonight and hisbest two times were better than the last four races in the PremierLeague. It augers well for the Saints run of home meetings whilst it isgreat to see young riders like Adam Kirby, Tom Woolley, David Holt and MichaelNeale also improving. It doesn’t matter to me which side they wereon so long as the kids are getting some racing”. TheStags remaining meetings are: Thursday23rd August – Away v Milton Keynes (at Sheffield) Friday14th September – Home v Stoke Full scorers: Scunthorpe Stags 16–Adam Kirby 10(4), Martin Wrathall 6 (4), Lee Springthorpe 0 (4) Belle Vue Colts 20 – Max Clegg 9(3), Tom Woolley 6 (3), David Holt 3+1 (3), Michael Neale 2 (3) 1: Kirby, Woolley, Holt, Wrathall (fell, excluded), no time, raceawarded (3-3) An excellent inside pass by Adam Kirby atthe end of the third lap meant a shared heat when the race was awarded afterMartin Wrathall fell for the second time in the race. The first time hefell he lay a close third on the third bend. 2: Clegg, Wrathall, Neale, Springthorpe,60.28 (2-4) (5-7) Michael Neale passed Lee Springthorpe atthe start of the second lap. 3: Clegg, Kirby, Holt, Springthorpe,59.44 (2-4) (7-11) 4: Kirby, Wrathall, Woolley, Neale,61.65 (5-1) (12-12) With four fairly evenly matched racers itwas the Stags duo that made the better starts and Martin Wrathall rode well tokeep Tom Woolley behind him and bring the Stags back into contention. 5: Clegg, Kirby, Holt, Springthorpe,59.40 (2-4) (14-16) Max Clegg completed a stylish maximum ina time that beat the last four races in the preceding Premier League meeting. 6: Woolley, Wrathall, Neale,Springthorpe, 61.75 (2-4) (16-20) Tom Woolley gained revenge on MartinWrathall to ensure the Colts secured victory.

  16. well done to Brady Kurtz on a superb win followed by fellow Aussies Damien Koppe and Harley Horwood ....with bad luck on Tom Young who had two bike failures after scoring 8 from his first 3 rides.
  17. Brady did really well in his first full UK meeting. 4points in the qualifying heats then he led Starke and Lambert in the semi till he fell . Brother Todd text me that he was ok and enjoyed it and learnt a lot. His next outing is Thursday at Redcar in their open meeting
  18. Harley Horwood is an Aussie who is here getting rides for a few weeks to put himself in the shop window and I have arranged a few open bookings for him. Sean Mason is staying with Jason Bunyan and has been here since riding in the World u21 qualifiying meeting and is over for the rest of the season. Jamie is another kiwi but don't know much about him
  19. MDL : The top of the table clash between Long Eaton and Coventry-Mercia turned out to be a rushed and truncated affair after long delays in the preceding Premier League clash between Leicester and Rye House. As it was the Vikings were forced into two late team changes with new signing Darryl Ritchings having to pull out of his debut after encountering motor problems that left him without a suitable engine to use. 15 year old Max Clegg , who rides for Belle Vue in the MDL, stepped but had a troubled night with a fall in his second ride. Tyler Govier’s problems encountered in the home match on the Wednesday were compounded by travel troubles and Conor Dwyer stepped in for him. On track the Vikings just didn’t trouble the home side with two falls for Cam Hoskins, one for Clegg and bike troubles for Dwyer and Knuckey hitting their scoring power. The rushed meeting came to an abrupt halt when Conner Coles crashed and Cam Hoskins had to lay his bike down to avoid him hurting his wrist in the process. The red lights were displayed by ref Jim Lawrence along with the blue exclusion light but the race was neither re-run or awarded with the referee seemingly deciding enough was enough and closed the meeting and went home! The problems encountered by the youngsters , who travel long distances (Martin Knuckey comes from deep in Cornwall) for track time and receive no remuneration either for travel or points money , must be addressed. Vikings co-team boss Laurence Rogers wonders if the whole set up needs looking at , “ I do not know the answer but having been involved in the sport for a long time and run hundred and hundreds of meetings I have some ideas. Lakeside run theirs before the main meeting starting earlier than normal but some tracks may not be willing to do this. I did suggest to Leicester’s clerk of the course that instead of waiting for the Premier League riders to get ready for their celebratory laps that they run the first two junior races then when there are two rides on the trot then do the winning celebration.” “Another idea which may not receive universal agreement is to do a heat after races 4, 8 , 12 and 14 in the main meeting leaving two to fit in after ….I don’t know what the answer is but for the future of young British riders coming through clearly something has to be done.!” Long Eaton 17 : Oliver Greenwood 3,3=6, Connor Coles 2*,3=5+1, Lee Geary© 3,1=4, Liam Rumsey F,2*=2+1 Mercia 7: Max Clegg 1,0=1, Cameron Hoskins 0,0=0, Martin Knuckey 1*,1=2+1, Conor Dwyer 2,2=4 H1: Greenwood, Coles, Clegg, Hoskins 5-1/5-1 68.54 H2(Awd): Geary, Dwyer, Knuckey, Rumsey (f,x) 3-3/8-4 NO TIME H3(Awd): Greenwood, Rumsey, Knuckey, Hoskins (f,x) 5-1 / 13-5 NO TIME H4: Coles, Dwyer, Geary, Clegg(f,rem) 4-2 / 17-7 68.90

Danny Phillips 1’ 1 1 3 +1 (points do not count) The Coventry-Mercia Vikings fired themselves into joint top spot in the Midland Development League with a win over Scunthorpe that gave them their first double of the season and maintained their home unbeaten record. It was achieved despite mechanical gremlins for each and every Viking plus a bizarre exclusion in heat 5 . 16 year old Josh Bates caught the eye on his home debut with three unbeaten rides although he missed his second ride when he hit electrical problems on his bike. He posted a time just two seconds outside the Elite League winning times in heat 4 to outline his vast potential. Another 16 year old Devonian Tyler Govier , skippering the side , had a night to forget though with gremlins seeing him pull in heat one and despite mad work on his machinery in the pits he never made it back out on track. Local lad Conor Dwyer rode solidly although he too had bike troubles but still managed to record paid 10 from his four outings. Fellow local rider though Andrew Braithwaite had two exclusion and a paid win . The first exclusion in heat 2 was straightforward as he crashed out whilst on a 5-1 with Josh Bates but his second was probably the most bizarre one ever seen. He got out of shape on bend 4 and went very wide with the Scunthorpe riders slightly affected but the red stop lights came on and the referee Mick Posselwhite excluding the home rider . The explanation given to joint team boss Laurence Rogers was that he thought the rider was unsafe and shouldn’t be on the track which amazed everyone. As Rogers commented , “ I have never in all my years team managing ever seen such a decision –it was totally bizarre. Perhaps it’s a new rule no one knows about!!” With two league points in the bag secured by a Bates and Dwyer 5-1 in the last heat the Vikings joined Long Eaton and Belle Vue on 9 points making their away encounter at Leicester on Saturday a top of the table clash with top spot vying for whichever side takes victory.
