Jan O Pedersen’s newly launched British Speedway Academy , aimed at producing future home bred World Stars, is already planning ahead with the next stage of development. Having come through the highly successful Scandinavian scheme himself to reach the highest level as 1991 World Champion , Jan O wants to mirror what he knows works and add his own brand and flavour to the schemes. The initial Academy scheme is aimed at the 16-19 age group with the NVQ Level 3 qualification built in along with the help and support Jan O will provide with all aspects of the sport brought into their learning curve. But Jan O realises that there is potential for helping a wider audience of riders from a young age and those with lack of experience but outside the age parameters of the Academy. Therefore he is designing another set up that will not only provide entrants to the Academy in the years to come as well as catering for those who are outside the age levels for this. The scheme will all tie in with the membership club that has been devised with two levels of entry at £25 (Foundation) and £100 (Executive) with the more support this derives the more riders Jan O can help and support. Jan O says, “ I have thought long and hard about this and discussed it with Laurence Rogers , who is assisting me and running the membership club along with Lisa Heath who is my old fan club secretary . We believe there are riders out there from a young age to those a little older who can benefit from the scheme and want to open the opportunity up to them. “ “We are looking at running some training schools open to riders of all ages so I can assess them and give help and guidance where needed. We will also incorporate many of the aspects on the main Academy course and do workshop guidance along with diet and health as well as offering one to one help.” “ I really want to see this succeed and will do all I can to ensure it does. Riders interested in this can e-mail : jano@speedwayacademy.co.uk or laurencerogers@blueyonder.co.uk and we will get back to you with our plans and schedule along with details of how to join the scheme.” website : www.speedwayacademy.co.uk

After taking the advantage in heat 2 the Knights were left to ruing their luck when an engine failure for Adam Sheppard and fall for Niall Strudwick allowed to Invaders to claim all five points in heat 3. Heat 4 was eventually settled on the third time of asking after Danno Verge and Cameron Hoskins both started off 15 metres for tapes infringements, with Verge coming from behind to follow Conor Dwyer home for maximum points. Advantages in heats 5 and 6 lead the Knights to victory and back to winning ways.

Clegg gated and hit the front with the other three riders all jostling for position around the first and second turn it was a determined Michael Neale who emerged from the pack and followed team mate Max Clegg, Castleford's own turbo twins striking an early blow with a 5-1 heat advantage Heat 2 time 61.87 1 Rose 2 Williamson 3 Bailey 4 Portwood. Lightning reduced the deficit by two points in this heat with Rose outgating Williamson though he did noticeably close the gap over the final two laps of the race with Bailey finishing third ahead of Portwood who immediately returned to the pits to make changes to his set up. 2-4 overall 7-5 Heat 3 time 60.82 1 Clegg 2 Rose 3 Neale 4 Bailey Clegg from the gate over Rose who led home Neale who though on the pace could not close the gap and with Bailey finishing in last place The Kings restored their four point advantage.4-2 overall 11-7 Heat 4 time 61.25 1 Williamson 2, Kirby 3. Portwood 4. Govier (fell) Williamson romped home to a tapes to flag victory over Kirby and with Portwood looking livelier he took third place with Govier falling on the second bend of the final lap. 4-2 overall 15-9 Heat 5 time 61.62 1. Neale 2. Portwood 3. Govier 4. Bailey Neale and Portwood launched themselves out of the gate with the former looking assured and stretching his lead over the four laps whilst Portwood did well to keep the Kings Lynn pair at bay as the Kings recorded their second maximum heat victory to secure their first league points of the season. 5-1 overall 20-10 Heat 6 time 60.72 1. Clegg 2. Rose 3. Kirby 4. Williamson The question on everyone's lips was could anyone prevent Max Clegg from recording a maximum and when Rose and Kirby both outgated Clegg a shock looked on the cards. With Clegg and partner Williamson tussling around the first and second bend with Kirkby it was Clegg who emerged out of the pack but by now Rose was the length of the back straight ahead. Clegg was relentless in stalking his prey and was on the back wheel of Rose at the end of lap two eventually lining him up for a superb inside swoop to pass him entering the third turn of the penultimate lap 3-3 final score 23-13

MDL K O Cup Semi-Final Friday June 21st Coventry CITY GEARBOXES Mercia-Vikings 20 (42) Long Eaton Invaders 16 (29) The CITY GEARBOXES Vikings secured their place in the inaugural MDL KO Cup Final with a 20-16 victory over Long Eaton to give an overall scoreline of 42-29. They will face Stoke in the Final following the Spitfires 23-13 away win over Kings Lynn midweek with the Norfolk club conceding the tie. The Vikings were well led by 16 year old whiz kid James Shanes , who has gained promotion to the Coventry Storm National League side. The Dorset based teenager raced to another 9 point maximum to follow up being unbeaten in the first leg at Leicester a few weeks ago. He was backed up by new recruit Ryan Terry Daley who won his first to rides convincingly before snapping a chain on the line in his final ride to rob him of a maximum as well. New skipper John Markham ended on a high note with a race win in his last ride after a wheel to wheel battle with Long Eaton’s Jeremy Pestell who crashed on the pits bend with the closely following Viking Cam Hoskins laying his bike down to avoid him with the race awarded. The Invaders batted hard with Lee Springthorpe in the thick of the action having a ding dong battle with John Markham in heat 4 getting the better of the Coventry captain on the final bend. Midland Development League : Monday June 17th Belle Vue DIAMOND H Colts 15 Coventry CITYGEARBOXES Mercia-Vikings 21 The 100% unbeaten record of the Belle Vue Colts was taken with the on-form Mercia Vikings recording their third successive away win with a convincing 21-15 victory. The Vikings had previously had away success at Leicester against Long Eaton in the MDL K O Cup semi-final and then followed that up with a 20-16 victory at Stoke on Saturday. They started their clash in Manchester with the Belle Vue Colts with a strong opening two heats to lead 9-3 with newest recruit Ryan Terry-Daley leading the way with two victories including a heat one success over high flying Dudley reserve Max Clegg. The Colts pulled back some of the deficit with a 4-2 in heat 3 only for the CITY GEARBOXES Vikings to put themselves in a great position with a 5-1 from Terry-Daley and Conor Dwyer in heat 4 to lead 16-8. Michael Neale took heat 5 but with Danny Phillips and Terry-Daley behind him the drawn heat meant that Coventry were home and dry at 19-11. A final heat 4-2 to the home side gave a final score of 15-21 with the three man Vikings side claiming the two league points to catapult them up the league table to third . Missing the unavailable Tyler Govier the trio of Dwyer, Terry-Daley and Phillips took four rides apiece to maintain the Vikings recent form. The Vikings now face Long Eaton at Coventry on Friday in the MDL K O Cup Semi-Final 2nd leg holding a nine point lead from the first leg. DIAMOND H Colts 15 1. Max Clegg 2 3 3 = 8 2. Tony has retired. Small mention in speedway star this week with an interview with him in the next edition. Great guy , an inspiration as a captain ...would make a great team manager
-
so do I TMW --was trying to help Tom Young last night having known him since he started riding and rode for me at Newport. He had bike problems we tried to sort but it was his confidence that was a big problem as well.
-
AJ KIng is correct --it was Tom Young not Perry who fell and withdrew last night at Stoke. Hope Tom Perry is ok.
-
Newport tried a few meetings with £10 admission and one did have a much better attendance ....but as pointed out the increase has to be much higher to cover the costs involved

MDL : Saturday June 15th STOKE SPITFIRES 16 Coventry CITY GEARBOXES Mercia-Vikings 20 The COVENTRY GEARBOXES Vikings finally got their first MDL victory of the 2013 campaign with a 20-16 away win over Stoke to follow –up the previous week’s K O Cup away win over Long Eaton. They took full advantage of the home side losing Shaun Tedham with a cracked frame after his first ride with the on form 16 year old whiz kid James Shanes again on top form. The diminutive racer from Dorset belies his lack of experience with some breathtaking rides dropping one point to home man Lee Payne , who had scored 8 points in the preceding National League Trophy encounter, but also gaining revenge over the Stoke reserve by winning heat 6 in fine style. He also set a time just 0.1 outside Lee Smart’s heat 15 win in the main match when winning heat 3 when John Markham joined him for an all important 5-1 to put the Vikings ahead 11-7. Markham put his side in a strong position when winning the all important penultimate heat ensuring the Vikings went in to the final race two points up at 16-14. He dropped one point with paid eight in his three rides with his best performance to date in Vikings colours. Shanes and Ryan Terry-Daley then ensured victory with a 4-2. Terry-Daley was a little anxious in his second ride in heat 4 when breaking the tapes but fought through from the 15 metre handicap for a vital second place. Vikings debutant Lawrence Fielding , although not scoring, improved as the meeting progressed and will have gained from the experience. The Vikings next home clash is the second leg of the MDL K O Cup semi-Final at Brandon on Friday against Long Eaton holding a nine point lead from the away encounter. STOKE SPITFIRES 16 1. think the early heat delays were caused by the referee really -- some were down to a bit of movement at tapes but he was holding them far too long -
