COVENTRY Storm face another tough examination of their National League title credentials with a powerful Mildenhall team visiting Brandon on Friday (7.30pm). The City Gearboxes Storm pulled off a stunning victory at West Row on Easter Sunday and are top of the table having won all four of their matches so far – but the Fen Tigers are undoubtedly contenders too. The visitors are led by Coventry asset and last year’s Storm No.1 Joe Jacobs, and also include British Under-21 Champion Josh Bates – whilst at reserve is another ex-Storm rider Brendan Johnson, who has been scoring well this season but has not completed enough matches for a reflective average. The Storm will use rider-replacement for Luke Crang, who has a Premier League commitment for Redcar at Somerset, although his excellent form so far this season has seen his average rise to 7.37, meaning all team members with the exception of skipper James Sarjeant can take one of his outings. Co-boss Laurence Rogers said: “We’re going for the double but they’re going for revenge, and I think this is probably a tougher match for us than the Cradley one. “We need to negate their reserve strength and it will be interesting too with JJ (Jacobs) coming back – he had an amazing home record last year. “We hit them at the right moment on the day we went there, we were all on-song and we need to be on Friday too. Hopefully the Coventry fans will get behind us and come in their numbers to make lots of noise and support the boys so we can retain our position at the top.” A Coventry win on Friday would be a massive step towards a place in the play-offs, as it could take them as many as six points clear at the top of the table. But by way of further warning, Coventry have never beaten Mildenhall at Brandon – the Fen Tigers having been victorious on both of their visits last year as well as in the Conference Trophy back in 2004. With Mildenhall also being one of the best-supported clubs in the National League there should be a good atmosphere for what promises to be a terrific battle between two excellent sides at this level. Admission is just £10 for all adults, with all children free. Heat 2 was run before the re-run of heat one with Coventry on a 3-3 until Adam Sheppard was forced out of the race with bike trouble giving Sheffield a 4-2 start. Heat 1 then say the scores levelled as Terry-Daley took the win with partner Tom Sipos edged out by home man Alex Wilson. Heat 3 saw Ben Holloway come in for Phillips and the home man raced to his second win with partner Wilson third putting the Tiger Cubs ahead at 10-8. Heat 4 was rushed out to get a result before the curfew with the CITY GEARBOXES Vikings looking like snatching a win with Terry-Daley and Tom Sipos on a 5-1 before Sipos suffered a blown engine and the home side snatching victory from the jaws of defeat with a 12-11 win. -
