There was definitely a league in 1976. I seem to remember Bert Harkins competed in it (for Bakerfield or something similar). And i have Eddie Reeves and Dave Giffard in my head as having done likewise.

Spot on regarding neutral venues. With all due respect the likes of Kerr, Leverington, Kramer and Schramm amongst others were hardly going to drag the locals out from their Sunday afternoon kips.

Not to mention the line up was absolutely garbage! The fact that the winner barely scrapes a point on hi EL visits shows the almighty chasm between the leagues.
