I collect hundreds of riders autographs as a kid and the only person that ever refused to sign once was Barry Crowson. It was all dressed-up in a suit at the when Wimbledon raced against Coventry in the GBL in 1976 at Plough Lane I still remember it extremely well. I was standing outside the the pits exit on the grandstand aside when he refused to sign. Cyril Maidment came out form the pits and said to don't bother standing their you ca always go into the pits to get some autographs at it was the after the match before the second half started. Cyril and Barry went off to discuss something and I went into the pits and loads of autographs including Ole Olsen which made-up for Barry's refusal. I did already have Barry's autograph though. If i remember correctly this was at the time when Barry had a dispute with Wimbledon because he wanted to ride gian for King's Lynn but Wimbledon put a £10,000 price tag on his services, and he never rode again officially as I'm aware off in British speedway.

Norbold I'm kind of like you I was born within walking distance of New Cross, if I had attend New Cross before they closed down when I was a baby then I would have been most likely supported them instead of Wimbledon. My late father used to go to New Cross when he was younger, with his favourite rider being George Newton.

Tommy Jansson breaking the Hackney track record on my first visit at the 1976 Superama is still my first clear memory of Waterden Road. As my elder brother when he started to go speedway was a Hawk supporter there was always much fun to be have when Wimbledon and hackney raced against each other.

Programmes like all other things in life have a value - what that value is wholly depends on what someone is willing to pay for an item e.g. 45,000 Cardiff GP programmes from say 2010 they may not have an high value but is no-one is willing to sell their copy then anyone wishing to sell theirs will receive an higher price than it is worth just for the fact that it may be the only copy of this programme for sale and someone wants a copy of their own.

It was a pure mistake on my part I thought I clicked onthe New Cross memories page and did not that it was the Wembely one.

Double Headers With Same Team
Robbie B replied to martinmauger's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
In 1976 the Ipswich Vs Wimbledon Spring Gold Cup Final 2nd Leg also counted as the Gulf British League match. I think this was due solely as both teams normally rode on Thursday nights. Wimbledon home matches against Ipswich were always held when I used to attend Plough Lane on a Bank Holiday Monday. Maybe the Workington Vs Lakeside Challenge Shield Final and SGB Championship match count as one fixture, and the Play-Off (if Lakeside qualify) as a separate match then all three matches can be concluded in one simple double header. -
Seeing that the BBc TV Blue Peter is celebrating its 60th birthday it jogged my memory about a clip on YouTube featuring John Noakes and Peter Purvis at Hackney speedway that some of you might enjoy https://youtu.be/nsKQIihffE8 Shame that I can't find clip of the programme featuring Gordon Kennett riding around White City before their March 1976 opening meeting. Does anyone know whether they featured Wimbledon speedway or any other UK tracks?

Fantastic result for Smederna to win back-to-back titles which is something that's not easily achieved by any team in any league. I'm so proud of all the team including the team manager Jerker Eriksson who gets the best out of the riders even when the odds are against them. WELL DONE SMEDERNA SWEDISH ELITSERIEN SPEEDWAY CHAMPIONS 2018

There are many parameters that can be used to decide whether a riders deserves legendary status not just how many World titles or other titles that they might have won. You could also include a riders loyal service to a particular club or length of riding within the sport. Plus their attitude towards fans etc. Because of this what one person thinks of a rider is a legend another will not, as you can never please everyone. You list is a good list of 70s and 80s riders and everyone will have their own opinion on the riders mentioned. At the end of the day someone who wins multiple World Titles whether as an individual or within a team deserves all the credit for the efforts and most importantly the memories created and stored in the brains of those who witnessed them riding. Take the TV show Pointless today the 16 most famous Londoners that featured David Beckham he is only famous for achieving club success and not internationally, and for being in magazines all the time, so I was surprised to see him mentioned. London has produced far more successful sportsmen and ladies over the years than him.

There is no way I was trying to state that Malcolm Simmons has exclusive rights to be called a Legend regarding speedway that would be a completely stupid assertion of mine. There are many riders that I admire right from the beginning of speedway starting in the UK that I would have loved to have seen riding and i wish that I had a time-machine to carry this function out.

You may well be right, as 1976 was my first year of attending live speedway meetings. I'm sure Les Grey as Hackney suporter hand more importantly as a speedway fan would also attend meetings at other London tracks and maybe further afield. Personally I often used to go to meetings at White City, Hackney and Crayford even though I'm a Wimbledon fan. if I remember right I saw seeing Dennis Waterman at a Hackney meeting in 1976 it might have been the Superama.
