The Collapse Of The Pound And The Effect On The El

Welcome to the world of manufacturing where in the main, companies have to compete globally to win business! What makes farmers a special case that they should receive subsidies whether it be from the EU or the British government? -
..............any fireworks?!!

I think farmers are a different situation as they receive subsidies from the EU A Orlov, we do not in manufacturing. It will be interesting when the subsidies stop as I am sure the farming industry will expect the government to give them the same level of subsidy which will beg the question, why can't manufacturing receive a similar subsidy!! I have already been in contact with my local MP over this and will be lobbying him. Exchange rate has gone against us as we invoice in sterling but all our steel and castings come from overseas and so prices has risen dramatically. Also transport costs have gone up too. Got any ideas how we can take advantage of this situation? -

Sorry, but I think this totally exaggerated and leaving the EU will not change the redtape as the British government will not remove it anyway. We export to Germany (work that is now at risk) and although no VAT is charged as we are a member, we have to keep reams of paperwork including the carrier, reg no's of the trucks would you believe to prove the consignments are leaving the UK. The German customer tells me they have to do this when export to the UK!!! What will happen to VAT when we leave? Sounds like it will be a nightmare!!! -

Can you give me any examples of any of this EU red tape? I run 2 businesses what I do know is that we have ONS, RTI Auto-enrolment and many more examples of red tape from this government. -

That is all well and good Tony but it didn't stop the flower importer going bust recently and all the raw material I buy for my engineering company has gone up but I can't pass on the increase. Transport costs are already rising too. What advantages will my business/me see? -
Ah but maybe Poole are dropping down to the PL so that Matt can have Kyle on a PL average!!!

From BBC news website: The former boss of Sainsbury's, Justin King, has given an indication of the problem, saying that shoppers should expect higher prices because supermarkets will not be able to absorb the extra cost of imported goods. According to media reports of a conference speech by Mr King, he said: "Retailers' margins are already squeezed. So there is no room to absorb input price pressures and costs will need to be passed on. "But no one wants to be the first to break cover. No business wants to be the first to blame Brexit for a rise in prices. But once someone does, there will be a flood of companies, because they will all be suffering." Leading retail analyst Richard Hyman told the BBC: "This shines a light on something that is going to be happening all the time. "The problem is that retailers can't just put up their prices and get away with it. "Oversupply of retailers means that for the past 24 months there has been food price deflation. What makes them think they can just push prices higher?" he added. -

Really? Like the flower importer a couple of weeks ago that had fixed 6 months contracts to supply flowers to supermarkets from Holland etc and with the current exchange rate found that he was selling them for less that he was getting paid so his company went into administration. He didn't adapt very well!!
