Barney, without being argumentative, the thread wasn't about whether people like or can't abide the sport, it was whether people know of it's existence*. I don't know why it's veering off into how many like it or hate it. EDIT I correct that, the thread is indeed titled 'what outsiders think of speedway', however, my replies and questioning of a couple of posts made were on their stating that most people don't know what speedway is, which for reasons i gave seems a little far-fetched. Also i only picked you up on your 'seven dwellings' quote and example because that's what you had used when i replied to your post. Lol lol 'admonished' i can assure you i wasn't handing out a chiding or punishment to anyone! Just querying the validity of the example Barney gave at that point in the thread at that time. No arguing, no admonishments just a calm discussion. Groan......this is digressing more and more. Obviously if you search for or mention Belle Vue SPEEDWAY, you'll get a different set of results. I was replying to the post that read...... He didn't ask what does Belle Vue SPEEDWAY mean to you. Is all clarified now?

This is getting silly now. Anyone know yet if Australia will have an Australian reserve? UPDATE It is reported that Travis McGowan will wait until the day of the meeting to name his third rider (if there will be one?) I getting a little irked that the day before the meeting we don't have a complete line-up. I put work into hurriedly setting up a great racecard (as others have done the same) in a very short time i had available grrRRRR lol. So it's annoying if it's going to end up in a type of open meeting with meaningless team names. Ok yes, of course i'll be watching and thoroughly enjoying the meeting whoever ends up riding for who, and yes of course Poland seems to be the only country capable of staging an event of this kind outside of the GP's. Incidentally, whilst the event has it's own official site can't find any preview or write up of it on the Eurosport site I thought i had seen articles earlier in the week but maybe i've got in mind just seeing the Eurosport logo on the official site of the event. -
Hence why i said I pointed out several years ago that if you Googled (before search engines used algorithms to heavily regionalize results) or mentioned Belle Vue the most popular result was an American hospital and that more media mentions were for the Rugby League stadium. As a result i suggested it would be an excellent idea for the Aces to be renamed and referred to in all publicity as 'Belle Vue Manchester'. This resulted in the expected shock horror responses from those who watched the sport in the leg-trailing days and original mention of the Red Devil (Frank Varey i think). Let's be clear 'Belle Vue' is a tiny area within Manchester. Most of the 2.7 million residents of Greater Manchester would not be able to pinpoint it on a map. 'Manchester', especially in the world of sport is internationally known. Casual TV viewers would have more interest in a sporting contest involving a match between say Birmingham and Manchester than an unheard of Belle Vue (and hey! Perry Barr). It's a persistent myth that 'Belle Vue' is world famous. It may have been in the 30's or 40's, yep even in South America! but sorry in the modern world including the last few decades it is NOT a world famous sporting club. It's been, still is, an interesting thread and i think the general consensus now is that most people HAVE heard of speedway.

That's a very extremely limited sample of the UK public...seven dwellings! Yourself and friends are "all retired", i think you'll find that younger and middle-aged people do tend to have the latest thing be it gadgets or in the television word satellite tv a.k.a Sky. Pretty much most people don't have a F1 car in their garage but will watch that sport. Followers and television viewers of most sports don't have the equipment involved in it in their possession, or even have a daily interest in the tools of the sport. You say "OK, you're interested in speedway, not everybody else is!" I didn't remotely say everyone is interested in speedway, The observation i made and question i asked was how can the people that Gustix mentions here and there in threads and also the OP here not be aware of speedway, due to the reasons i gave above. Good for you mate getting out and about, i'm sure you know the worst thing that someone advancing in years can do is sit inside all day, so if you're physically able to, cool get out there Geez even if it's only loitering on street corners - although i hasten to add avoid getting into turf battles with those young 'uns lol.

Too be honest i personally never make racecards available for UK league meetings for that very reason, it might stop the odd person or two from buying a match programme. The only exceptions are UK staged GP, SWC, British FInal and the odd other major 'sell-out' meeting. That's why i do the Swedish and Danish leagues but not UK. I have a UK one set up on my computer for personal use, but wouldn't like to make them available to a wider audience. Having said that, don't Sky themselves make a printable racecard for every match they cover??? Just go to their speedway home page and check, i'm sure they used to. -

His 7 points was even better than appears. He was excluded in one of his four races, won one and in the other finished second behind his team mate. A snippet from a match report; "But on a day when the team lacked superstar, there were also new faces that really stamped into. Especially the only 16-year-old Brady Kurtz, which accounted for 7 +1 points and along the way ran from Kenneth Bjerre. "Brady is only 16 years old and usually run on our second team, so he really has some potential. He is a shooting star in the future. That he beats Bjerre in Heat 10 is wildly beautiful, "says Rudi Steen Hansen." -

Or seeing as he's Slovenian the solution that would avoid belittlement is as i mentioned erlier -
Gustix keeps saying that in various threads. Do you work in a Convent or a Monastery that has no links to the outside world? I find it difficult to believe that nowadays someone wouldn't have caught sight of a mention of speedway either on tv, in the printed press, tv magazine listings with a photo attached or online media. Are these people blind not to even be aware of speedway, i find it hard to believe they've never caught sight or mention of the sport. It's been on the biggest sports platform for over a decade in primetime viewing hours. Whilst national media gives little coverage local media is often good. That's an important market as i remember the Manchester Evening News pointing out a few years back that it outsells on a daily basis each of the major national newspapers within the Greater Manchester area. In the 70's, when speedway had vastly larger crowds at the tracks (little did we know of the desolate terraces to come), you would have accepted that people had never heard of the sport due to it not being on primetime television year after year. But come on? never heard of speedway?

Serious trivia question....do you know if they have a Lego speedway rider on display? I just posted elsewhere and caught sight of a post of his/hers from a couple of days ago. Maybe someone has kidnapped hi/her and absolutely nobody will pay the 1 pence ransom, in fact they giving money for him/her not to be released lol. Apologies for the him/her i thought someone pointed out recently it was actually a girl, sorry i'm unsure. Gee how could i forget that you are a mortal enemy of this The Champions Man U supporter lol. Lol lol regards the stream. Yeah would certainly love to see Cook and Auty plus a few others try their hand in the Swedish Elitserien (not Allsvenskan though). -

Absolutely fair enough if you enjoyed it then i'm sincerely glad for you. Personally myself when i go to a sporting event or watch it on tv i want to see sport not pantomime. I seriously doubt any sport needs their participants popping out of black cloaks in order to improve it!!! ok maybe WWE American wrestling might be the only exception but then again that's 0% sport and 100% pantomime. -

It would be good if another Russian can make a leap in form to get really noticed. Even though Emil is one of my absolute favourite riders i'm sure there are fans in Russia who don't worship every action he takes. So to have a second Russian rider would be good, as well as likely mean an exciting rider is added to the field. It's good to see Smolinski still holding his fantastic average in the Elite League. I don't look at rolling averages as they are just used for team building regulations, i prefer the actual current season's sporting performances as published in the Speeedway Star since time began (well at least post-dinosaur era). Not sure how well, or if, he would hold that form in a higher class of racing. I just went to look at the Polish and Swedish averages but he doesn't compete in the top tier. In the THIRD level in Poland he averages over two meetings a mere 6 points!. I presume he's just had two stinkers of a meeting there as his UK Elite League average would infer he should score heavily in that particular Polish league. -

Ok say Coventry are riding in a match and you want to look up their recent match reports quickly give me their last 6 specific dates! Have you memorized them for every team in the league No major biggie this one and it did occur to me some will prefer the by date order. But say you've got a match on TV, or just ahead of a match you're interested in, and you want to read up on the teams recent matches, it's a lot easier to go to the Elite League section to find the team's reports than try and remember what days the teams had raced on or thumb through a whole weeks matches over three leagues. Also i'm pretty sure match reports normally take more than three double pages. My only true gripe is the scattering of a teams articles over multiple pages in bits and pieces. Again reading up on a team means thumbing through many, many pages instead of glancing at the one page. Life will go on though before anyone/usual suspects try to turn this into a big incident lol. -

Heat 9 and i finally get to sit down. Getting some unexpected extra lift there in that race. I wonder if Vojens will track a team anytime soon? Eh! what's going on, i was out of the room and pop back to see the meeting interrupted for the local bus route to pass through? -

I appreciate with the event being staged in your home country you'll be defensive of it, but that's a little harsh, he has a valid point with which i agree with too. The 'farcical' aspect is easily solved, see below. It should still be a fantastic spectacle that only Poland could stage. I look forward to it hugely. Many thanks for giving us the 'confirmed' line-up although it's still not complete and i hope we are going to get an Australian reserve for Australia and an American reserve for America and not two local Polish riders! Agree strongly that it devalues the event and that could have been avoided simply by calling the team Czech Rep/Slovenia. -

Sorry to hear about the stream problems. I'm in the UK and not had a glitch, i know Alan is in the US, i forget if you are UK or Poland Pandorum?. Got my viewing tactics for Kanalsport next week. Ignore totally every caption, write the results down as i see with my own eyes and also during the race catch sight of each riders race jacket to see who is actually in the race lol. Awww annoyed i didn't go with what i saw and missed watching a couple of races early on. Oh well the racing looks to be ok which is all that matters. I just hope women aren't as judgemental as we are Alan lol. I mean it's only cos i an Adonis (lol yeah right) that i can say mention with impunity "After a great night of drink, drugs and wild sex, i woke up this morning to find myself next to a really ugly woman. That's when i realised i had made it home safely." AND My girlfriend was standing nude in front of a mirror and said to m: 'I look horrible, I feel fat and ugly, pay me a compliment.' i replied, 'Your eyesight is perfect.' AND My girlfriend got naked and asked me, 'What turns you on more, my pretty face or my sexy body?' I looked her up and down and replied, 'Your sense of humour! OK enough and yes i'm alone at home right now, gee will be forever if she sees any of the above. -

LOL. I've just confirmed the team changes are right. Then i noticed in the line-up for the last heat they gave the riders scores so far, therefore the races i missed whilst going in and out of the room i back-filled the riders scores in and FFS it was clear Kanalsport captions so wrong yet again. I thought twice as far as the little bit of action i've seen that what i saw with my own eyes as the riders crossed the line was totally different to the result caption a few minutes later. Seeing i was doing other things i had forgotten how they crossed the line by then lol. I mean it this time i'll never trust a Kanalsport caption again. Oh well it won't affect my enjoyment of the speedway. Just off for a few minutes to get my dinner out of the oven and settle down to watch the racing. -

Ouch just caught sight of a changed Slangerup team but not long enough to catch. I can update the racecard within minutes but all i possibly saw was Kenni Nissen moved up to number 4 and a Kasper Lykke Nielsen at number 5. The oddset banner was covering most of his name -

Exactly my thoughts. Maybe after doing all the previous work setting up such a superb layout (club by club with the club's crest) it's left the designer with nothing to do but twiddle his/her thumbs and they need to show some work for their wages lol.. Seems to me to be a clear case of change for changes sake and i fail to see how those changes will attract new subscribers? -

Ummmm very little difference from it being a Dracula cloak and them having to wear plastic fangs lol. Ok on a less jokey response, ummmm why black them out from being spotted? Whilst football isn't the yardstick at all times could you really imagine the players ahead of a match having the floodlights turned out and emerging from under cloaks! Having said all that, it's only a minor disgruntle indeed and not worth giving over lots of discussion space to. I certainly prefer to remember the GP as a great entertaining SPORTING event in front of what i still reckon was a larger crowd. Regards attendance figures published or given out so far, whilst i can't take seriously Sportowefakty's 50,000 at face value if the official figure that was given to Philip Rising is correct then that must only include turnstile clicks or previous attendances were untrue. I am still a little mystified with the high level of criticism for the meeting. I loved it. Yes i do know about the track breaking up, but it was saved from being an absolute disaster and having riders refuse to race mid-meeting if it had not been worked in throughout the night. Seen worst tracks since and no calls for heads to roll or decrying the tracks as life endangering for the riders. A very enjoyable event and one a sport should be proud of. OMG! we'd so be complaining bitterly right now if the original plan had gone ahead and several riders got run over lol lol.
