Nameless Gp's Still!
manchesterpaul replied to manchesterpaul's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
22nd April and the official site still boldly emblazons varying titles on the GP's. On the events page SGP Events Page the three polish GP's are labelled 24.04.10 Leszno~~~~EUROPEAN 19.06.10 Torun~~~~~TORUN (although of the three it is the only one without a GP name above the venue name) 09.10.10 Bydgoszcz~~POLISH On the same events page to the right hand side is the main inset that also appears on several pages. Each venue link has detailed info about venue, tickets, travel etc. This names them as 24.04.10 Leszno~~~~EUROPEAN GP 19.06.10 Torun~~~~~TORUN GP 09.10.10 Bydgoszcz~~BYDGOSZCZ GP!!! -

Daugavpils 7,000 7,000 7,000 Etc.
manchesterpaul replied to manchesterpaul's topic in International World of Speedway
Just a belated further thought on this topic. I've been watching videos from Duagavpils matches and it reminded me of this topic. It appears the average crowd is 5,000. Surely they would get a full house for the GP's if tickets were not out of reach of the local populations economic levels. Anyone from Latvia can confirm that as the likely cause?. I'm still very surprised that this season's penultimate GP is to be held at the 4,000 capacity venue of Teranzano in Italy. -
To confuse matters further, i now recall where i strongly remember the quotation of 120,000. It was the 1976 (lol) final, i recall it because i can still visualise the left hand side of the front page of the Daily Mirror reporting Peter Collins triumph. Oh well, maybe they always got 120,000 for the world finals That in turn brings back another memory, i like many others (one hell of a lot in those days for Belle Vue) were tuning in to the local tv news programme the next day at teatime awaiting some sort of coverage. It got nearer and nearer to the end of the 30 minutes without a single mention and then hurriedly, just as the credits were starting to roll, one of the presenters blurted out 'congratulations to the speedway DRIVER Peter Collins who won the world title yesterday'. It turns out their switchboard was being bombarded with an ever increasing number of irate calls the closer to the end of the programme.

The recent publication of the photograph of Kelly Moran standing on the parade against a backdrop of an immense crowd at the 1979 World Final seeks me to try and get confirmation of something i have always held as fact. Namely, was the attendance at that meeting as high as the oft mentioned 120,000 (or even higher! i remember at the time 130,000 being quoted). Can anybody form Poland or elsewhere confirm the crowd size?. If i can ascertain that it was indeed the case, i will certainly be editing the Wikipedia page that lists the highest attendances for sporting events in the world. Although a Wiki page regarding the actual stadium does say 'Silesian Stadium also known as the National Stadium (Polish: Stadion Śląski or Stadion Narodowy) is a sport stadium located between Chorzów and Katowice, Silesia, Poland. It opened on 22 July 1956 and has since hosted crowds of over 120,000 for both football matches and motorcycle speedway world championships. It also hosts music festivals.' the meeting is strikingly absent from the aforementioned all time biggest attendances list page.

If one keeps ones faith in the Bible (Speedway Star) Revelation has today arrived as in their season preview issue it refers to the trio as............ 24.04.10 Leszno~~~~EUROPEAN 19.06.10 Torun~~~~~TORUN 09.10.10 Bydgoszcz~~POLISH What a cop out! 'Second Of Three Polish GP's This Year Which Will Next Year Be The Third Of Four Polish GP's' was by far the most accurate description. I am very surprised indeed not to see that being the moniker. UPDATE Nooooooo! everything as clear as mud again. I just noticed on page 2 of the magazine it refers to 'Tickets for one of the most eagerly awaited Grand Prixs of the season will go on sale next month. The Grand Prix of Poland' LOL! MANIACAL LOL! -

German Speedway Bundesliga 2010
manchesterpaul replied to Lake Bodom Comet's topic in International World of Speedway
It's great to see Germany taking steps to have a proper league competition. However, i'm very puzzled as to the very odd looking set of fixtures and as to how they are chosen. There are 6 teams, yet not only do they not meet each other home and away (as in the most accepted sense of sports leagues across the planet) but they don't meet all of the teams! How are the fixtures drawn up? do they change each year regarding match-ups? -

I did have a right old Google myself, unfortunately to no avail, before suggesting the email route. -
??? Nope! Bear in mind i'm in the UK and posting in a UK based forum and you quote, i presume, the German/European schedule. I can assure you in my tv listings magazine it states for today (23rd February 2010) FIM Ice Speedway The World Finals from Togliatti, Russia and from Saransk, Russia. Programmes scheduled twice this evening. If you check the Wikipedia link these were the first two rounds of the 9 round series(originally 10). Footnote: It was replaced by Dubai 24 Hours (some sort of car race methinks). I'll try contact them to see what plans are still intact for coverage of the Ice Speedway.

Quickest way to find out is likely to contact Eurosport Asia-Pacific by email/phone/forum and ask them. Unless a member of their programming staff is a forum member on here and can tell you Is a great shame that the highlights are shown with such a delay. -
Motors TV has two world finals programmes scheduled for 6pm and 10:20 pm tonight. Mind you just been to the website to check listings and it's not showing there, nor on the Sky epg. As with anything to do with speedway generally, 'Wikipedia' has good details of the series Wikipedia World Ice Speedway Championships 2010

Hmmmm! might be on the edge of a breakthrough here......Errrm Ferndown....we know it isn't the European or Polish GP so.....which GP at Torun do you refer to (not allowed to Say Torun GP until BSI declare it so)? I'm tempted to buy a ticket just to see what it has on it. -
Thanks for that link, i look forward to it hugely. Can you just clarify two things, you do mean Saturday night/Sunday morning? as in literally 02:00 on Sunday the 14th. Secondly when you say american style speedway, we are talking speedway as such, by that i mean the same as runs at established tracks like Costa Mesa, and you don't mean short track racing. UPDATE Just visited link and see that it's 6pm PST on the 13th which is indeed 2am on the 14th over here. See i always knew learning maths at school would one day eventually bear fruit. Hope you get a good crowd.

Nope! Current status of the three polish gp's are; 24.04.10 Leszno~~~~EUROPEAN 19.06.10 Torun~~~~~???????? 09.10.10 Bydgoszcz~~POLISH Latest betting has out in front now a clear favourite of 'Too Naff To Be Named GP'. Others in the betting 'Middle Polish GP' and the lengthy but accurate 'Second Of Three Polish GP's This Year Which Will Next Year Be The Third Of Four Polish GP's' Got to admit, i am tempted now to email them and ask lol. -

I agree totally with you in that the race format should include a pair from each team. Unfortunately, i think the test match idea is a no go with some teams not able to provide the 7 or 8 riders needed. However, there are formulas available for othen than pairs meetings to provide the necessary solution. I disagree with the moving from country to country not being coherent. The fact that speedway is not as huge as football gives weight to the need for rounds being staged only where there is a host nation involved. As mentioned earlier, even football often has sparse crowds when no local interest is involved. -

manchesterpaul replied to manchesterpaul's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Why do speedway supporters always presume that other sports have things right and we should slavishly follow suit? There are some aspects of speedway that are excellent. Can anyone really say that football's world cup being staged only once every four years is anything other than ludicrous. Teams rise and fall within such a long period. Speedway, in keeping with the vast majority of sports, gets a true current world champion annually, both individual and team. Whilst it may not be on the scale of football's world cup for revenue, sponsorship, tv viewing or attendances (well hell! absolutely nothing else is either), it attracts it's media coverage and brings in money annually, which can only be a good thing. One bad game in the qualification for a football world cup, if you hadn't qualified for the previous one, means EIGHT years without participation! Plus, football, the global game ingrained upon people with mass saturation coverage from every form of media, plays to deserted stadiums when teams play in neutral stadiums. Even tournaments like the African Nations Cup have deserted stadiums when a host nation isn't playing. Speedway also offers something nearly unique in that it is, on the whole, a team sport, which brings with it all the fun and fervour of being able to follow your (often local) team and also be able to hold a competition to determine the top individual of the sport. How great would it be if football, and other ball sports, were able to hold a contest to find out who is the best footballer in the world. The football world champion, now that would be good to know. Unfortunately, unlike speedway, there is no way to prove the best footballer in the world. Even if you had gimmicks like 'target' practice and passing challenges, it has no base in the actual flowing game of the sport. WHilst speedway riders get on a bike and race four laps for their team, and do exactly the same in the individual championship. -
Not been on this forum for a couple of months and been too busy to keep up with speedway news in the off season. Can't believe one thing hasn't changed yet and i've looked all over the official site, namely, what are the titles of two of the three polish staged GP's? The first at Leszno is nominated 'European' which leaves two more at Torun and Bydgoszcz. One will be the Polish so can anybody enlighten me as to the third? Maybe it's to be the 'Not another polish gp' GP

Bydgoszcz Gp And Torun Play Off
manchesterpaul replied to bruno's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Was going to make a joke about hoping it doesn't snow in Bydgoszcz on Saturday but the current forecast does indeed mention 'chance' of snow!. One of the many World Cup football matches i was flicking through last night was Poland versus Slovakia and i was surprised to see it snowing to a fair old degree. The weather station source BYDGOSZCZ WEATHER STATIONS is usually pretty accurate, but don't worry too much as there are still a couple of days to go so it can change. Having said that last night it didn't mention snow. All of which brings me to a serious question, has there ever been a GP staged in the snow? I don't mean a dusting but a reasonable amount. -
OK i'll deal with your intelligently composed and brilliant example of constructive criticsm on a point by point basis. Firstly, let's move onto point number one....oops! there isn't one. I would forgive you this as a one-off lapse however a forum search of your most recent posts only produce similar levels of debating skills such as; "Have you been drinking?" "Christ, i can't wait til Weds night! " "LOL. Pathetic." "waaahhhhh. Oh diddums." "The way some of you go on! What a bunch of big girls blouses." "If Poole sold Holder i would possibly beat Matt Ford to a pulp." "Its abolsoltuely p*ssing it down in Oakdale, 20 mins from the stadium. Dont think it will be on." "Good to see the fat Bjarne booer getting a telling off though." "The rest of you are pathetic. The Speedway equivalent of ABU's (anything but United)." So in retrospect, i'll likely ignore or probably block all your postings.
