Thanx BFD in Aussie- will keep buying those lottery tickets-I noticed a post from someone called 'I like Slant'-which prompted me to think of Slant Payling -is he still around-another Prov League whole hearted trier I recall

I don't think Sandor ever rode for Halifax. To Trackman in Australia -greetings from Canada-tell Greg Kentwell I remember him well, riding for Halifax in 66-67. One of the guys who added enjoyment to the sport by always trying his best and putting on a good show whatever the odds and wherever he went. Glad to hear he is doing well at the young age of 40 ish(tell him 60 is the new 40, particularly for former speedway riders)!! Tell him if I come over to Australia I will personally buy him a beer for all the pleasure he gave us in his speedway career!!

Third Man, the background is that Billy Sanders committed suicide and one of the precipitating factors was his wife's affair with Gary-who I think was also a family friend.I wonder what happened to Billy's ex wife now that she is no longer with Gary
-
Was it Laszlo Munkasci at Brafield-??not sure my spelling is correct
-
Thanx Trackman good day to you too-will be interested in anything further-I recall Sandor as the top rider for Newport for a while-I had wondered if he'd returned to Hungary with the fall of communism.
-
Does anyone know if Sandor is still with us

A number of expatriate Poles attend the Paris Ontario track , and I got into the subject of Edward Jancarz with one of them-who apparently knew the family. It is true that Eddie was stabbed to death by his wife.According to the Polish lady I spoke to she was aware that Eddie was a drinker who would get violent, and his death occurred during such a dispute. Terrible all round.

I could be wrong re Ian Gledhill-its happened before-can anybody out in Forumland help re this. By the way if you go to Youtube and enter "Kenny Carter speedway" you will see many of Kenny's greatest races. Also if any Canadians are reading this when does the Paris season start-can't wait!!

So did a Halifax ? rider who had done well in Div 2 Riders Championship was it Ian Gledhill

Since we're talking about this-I have been in the same situation as the two previous posts. Unless you have been in the depths of depression it is tough to comprehend what it's like. Its like being in the bottom of a black pit with no way out. Fortunately there are meds available-but some people won't avail themselves of them. My own feeling is that if you had a pain in your knee you'd take a pill for it so you should also do so if you have a"pain" in your head One of the disadvantages of the various medications, however, is that -until they kick in which is usually about two weeks- you can feel even worse and can be tempted to act impetuously. Its important to recognise this and make sure you realise that this is a feeling associated with the meds and say to yourself "calm down it will pass." I don't know, and we could analyse forever unproductively, whether Mr. Carter was in this situation and taking medication. It is true that if you have a tendency to be a risk taker or act impetuously(as he may have been given his occupation and personality),the meds are more likely to have this adverse effect. I do know that if you commit a rash act that is irreversible, an instant later you would realise what you'd done-a terrible realisation indeed! We'll never know the cause of these awful events-but I would say to anyone out there if you have terrible depression-get help-nothing to be ashamed of-its a chemical imbalance and can be treated. Don't suffer pointlessly.

What a team they were!! Anyone know where Ron Mountford and Rick France are these days. I always recall Ron who was a real tough s.o.b wearing contact lenses -unusual for those times. Ron made the World Final in 1962 and Rick made it in 1967-I saw him in the British Final at West Ham that year and what a tremendous meeting that was. Anybody out there in forum land recall that meeting-real hot weather and very dusty. Last time I was in UK walked from Plaistow Underground station down to the site of the old West Ham stadium-Nottingham St., etc-brought back old memories but my, how the old East End has changed -the Kray twins must be turning in their graves!!! I also think the Krays might be frightened by some of the new inhabitants in the old areas(don't report me to the British Human Rights Commission for these views!!!)

Further to my previous post don't think Ross Gilbertson was in Final race of PLRC 1963-I thought final line up was Briggs,Mauger,Kitcchen and Hunter. Anybody confirm this!!
-
Belated reply to Ian-indeed Jim Squibb did ride for Plymouth but when Plymouth closed he went to Exeter-rode in the PL for them and when BL started in 65 was still riding for Falcons and I think thru 68 for them. To Tiger Tom :re Canuck riders has Jimmy Gibb passed away then? Also I was interested to read that Eric Chtty ended up in Willowdale which is just down the road from me-see ya at Paris Tom!! Re Jim Henry's post wasn't one of the riders in 63 PL Final race leading when his engine packed up thereby giving it to Ivan. Can't remember whether it was Jack Kitchen or George Hunter tho' think it was the latter. Anyway when the smoke cleared i think Wayne Briggs was runner up

I've often wondered whether speedway riders are more volatile than the general population- in addition to the names mentioned off the top of my head I can think of Bob Paulson(I think Bob may have been gay when this was less accepted than today) and of course Alan Cowland after he retired. I'm wondering whether since speedway tends to be a macho environment-whether issues with women/relationships tend to hit home harder if they go wrong than with the pop at large-any thoughts on this. While its still a relatively small number, the numbers of the speedway riding profession are not that huge either. Any thoughts on this??
-
Thanx Tiger Tom-see you at Paris when it opens-to all the rest of the folks in Speedwayforumland-you should really try and get to Paris, Ontario -great atmosphere and great racing.
-
There is a good female rider in Canada-Corrine Franic-appears at Paris speedway
-
Thanx norbold got your message.
-
Thanx Norbold-do u know how I could contact Peter Jackson and does he have this material for sale?? Also what is Bryan Seery doing these days -is he still involved with Speedway I remember him writing programme notes at Swindon
-
Thanx Norbold- are you aware whether anyone has ever tried to go back before the British League era to retrospectively convert before 65 stats to the CMA system for comparison purposes? Also can anyone confirm Bryan Seery has indeed passed away and when??
-
In the post 65 era after the British League was set up-Bryan Seery was the official statistician and would have a section on stats in each week's Speedway Star-he kept extremely detailed records-not sure what he did for a living(teacher perhaps??). He came up I think with the idea of a CMA(Calculated Match Average)-which was the average points per ride(including bonus points) times 4(representing the usual number of rides). Thus the highest possible CMA could only be 12.00. Before that averages were just # of points divided by # of meetings-so someone could have an artificially high average if they rode a lot of races in a particular meeting e.g. some guys would ride 5 times and could thus get 15 points, in fact I remember a meeting at Poole where Ivan Mauger rode 7 times and scored 21 points(Under the Seery sytem this would still be 12). I'm wondering if anyone knows what happened to Bryan Seery-is he still doing these statistics-and did the CMA system as devised(I think) by him survive in to the present time??.
-
Yes the third rider in the picture is Boris Samorodov-if memory serves he scored 11 out of 12 points in 4 completed rides in the 1963 World Final(one exclusion after causing Ron how to fall. Sorry to hear about Igor-remember seeing him in 1965 World Final where he finished 2nd after beating Ove Fundin in run off)
-
I remember JIm as one of the great riders of the Prov League for Exeter-also as the leader of the sit down strike at the 1963 PLRC -anybody else remember that-and the grand finale-a race between the top 4 riders to determine the overall champion.Ivan Mauger won it and I think the other three riders were George Hunter, Wayne Briggs and Jack Kitchen. Does that sound right to the others in Speedway Forumland??
-
No question Carl-good for you- and I'm sure many people feel the same way-these historical items should be saved. I've watched the Halifax/Hanley clip several times-trying to pick out other riders. Another really interesting aspect is to see how the spectators dressed and acted-clearly people dressed more formally then. Perhaps a more simple time?? Although on reflection we all had worries about stuff even then-but perhaps different worries. What a great site.
