Saturday 13th June 1964(rescheduled from Friday 12th because of rain),Southern League. Newport 52(Golden 12,Erskine 9,Bradley 12,Penniket 2,Vandenberg 11, Vic White 3, Ray Harris 3), Long Eaton 25 (Adams 6, Mills 0, Ray Wilson 3, Storer 6, Ron Sharp 3,Bodie 3, Vale 4) Alby Golden broke track record in first race.. To Mart w-the result of the first meeting you saw was Newport 38 CH 40. To Berthoven-you're not old 70 is the new 50 just as 60 is the new 40 so you are only 53. I should know as I have just turned 40 having been born in 1946-have a beer on me!!!

I think Wikipaedia has great stuff on speedway -thanx to the dedicated historians out there

Don't think we will ever solve this-I was privileged to be there in L.A.-a great meeting. I do think if Les Collins had gone on to win it would have been a bit of a shame(like Sczakiel and Muller) as good as Les was he was never really a World Champ.I agree with Rami re Penhall-BUT whatever the rules say I wish there had been a re run with all 4 riders. I do miss the old one off world finals for excitement-but I guess the Grand Prix is fairer-tho' its weird a rider can become World Champ without ever winning a single Grand Prix meeting like Mark Loram. Apart from Sczakiel and Muller, I think it was unfair that home rider advantage was so great at Wembley in the Lions era-I think it may have enabled Tommy Price and Fred Williams becoming World Champs.( and prevented Jack Parker in 49)

Welcome to the forum maugerace-I have to go with the sixties tho-most of the guys you mention were going plus Fundin,Knutsson, Craven and the harum scarum Provincial League..It was great.
-
Who was Graham Miles anyway??
-
Yes I think he was-does anybody know where he is so we can measure him!!!!
-
Thanx mate-this one here is the most comprehensive from my point of view though-Imeantersay where can you get such a great conversation going on who was the tallest speedway rider ever-until corrected here I always thought it was Graham Miles!!!
-
Very sad to hear this-I sign on to the Forum after a couple of weeks away and hear both Igor Plechanov and PLJ have passed- what a drag. I recall Pete from the mid sixties with Wolves-one of the giants of the PL. Very sorry to hear this but know he will live in our memories-a fitting epitaph perhaps
-
I am extremely sad to hear of this-I guess my main recollections are that in the World Finals of both 1964 and 1965-Igor finished tied with Ove Fundin to decide second and third places(behind Briggo in 64 and Bjorn Knutsson in 1965-the latter meeting I was privileged to attend). Both times Igor beat Ove and so finished runner up in each of those finals. I wish he'd won it at least once-perhaps 1964 would have been best. A very nice unassuming person. What a damn shame he has passed.

Been out of town Tom-will get to Paris sometime this year-will bring along GRAHAM MILES so we can measure how tall he is and finally solve this mystery!!
-
I think I must have Christer Sjosten mixed up with Christer Lofqvist-perhaps it was the latter who died of illness. Sorry about Soren Sjosten-he was a great rider.
-
That's too bad-I know his brother Christer died -of leukemia I think-anybody expand on the comment re Soren??
-
Was on BSPA site-there's a bit about a book called Brummie Legends-says it covers people from Alan Hunt to "the tragedy of Soren Sjosten"-what tragedy is that-did he die?? If so how-don't tell me it was another suicide!!
-
In previous post I meant the Steve from Cahokia-hope you're keeping cool in the heat wave mate!!!
-
Hi Steve-the creepiest book I ever read about true crime was "Bundy the Deliberate stranger" by Richard Larsen-one of the cops involved. I lived in Vancouver in73-74 and can remember these people disappearing in Washington State e.g. at Lake Samamish Park.Bundy was scary. Also a couple of books on Paul Bernado and Karla Homolka(google em you'll probably find the titles)-reminded me of Brady and Hindley-that all happened in St.Catharines about 60 miles from Toronto-actually Stan Bradbury now lives in St. Catharines-trying to get a connection to Speedway in there. Having read all comments I plan to get the Kenny Carter book-based on the posts of readers here-sounds like John Berry's review was a needless red herring and didn't do it justice>
-
I remember Johnnie Chamberlain-sorry to hear re his health-how old would Johnnie be now??He rode for Norwich as well as Yarmouth right?. re Norbold-yes I must remember to post the Graham Miles data on the other thread-I will do it RIGHT NOW so I don't forget!!!
-
Many of you in forumland will know that I have been unjustifiably maligned for my extensive rersearch into another topic-i.e speedway's tallest rider. It then occured to me -who was at the other end of the scale?? I have two nominees-Billy Bales and Ian Turner.Great guys both altho' Billy was of my era. Anybody know who was the shortest-all I can say is that it can not be Graham Miles because according to the Speedway Star of 25.10.1968 he was 6'4"!!!!
-
P.S. Before I forget did I mention that Graham Miles was 6'4"-it must be right-it was in Speedway Star of 25.10. 1968!!!
-
Sorry guys-re Graham Miles repeated posts-my only excuse is that I'm a technopeasant with a short attention span!!
-
According to Speedway Star of Oct 25 1968-Graham Miles of Canterbury was 6'4"
-
According to Speedway Star 0ct 25th 1968-Graham Miles of Canterbury was 6'4"

I remember Bill Andrews very well as a PL rider with Newcastle in 1964-then went to Poole-as you say he was also a jockey. In terms of tracking him down-google World Speedway Riders Association-go to their website -I'm sure one of the members could help. You can leave a request on their website. Vic White has his e-mail address on tht website and is very helpful and a good guy. In the original post it mentioned Goog passing away-does that mean Goog Hoskin has died??. After he retired Goog spent some time in Canada-does anybody know where he lived and why he returned to UK??
