  1. Ok but what about Dennis day mentioned earlier in this thread-was a buddy of Len Silver's at Exeter I thnik, then I think he rode for Hackney in 64-Hackney had a good team that year and almost won PL-lets think, Pratt,Trigg and L.McGillivray were the heat leaders then I think,Poyser,Brian Davies, and was it Dennis Day or Sandy McGillivray?
  2. Now there is one I remember and wondered about myself-Ted Laessing-I recall him being really keen and studying the Newport track before he was due to ride-this is when he was a second half rider, sometimes in the team-perhaps 1967? I know after that he rode for Kings Lynn afterwards and didn't he have a tuning business,?he was an Aussie right??.Quite taciturn at that time along the lines of Charlie Monk. While a good rider when he started at Newport people thought he would go right to the top.Would like to know what he is doing.
  3. Brian Hamilton-it seems you and I are of the same vintage re speedway following and the names we bring forward!!Further re Geoff Mudge-when did he retire-did he go back to Aussie- also in Bob C's post(Hi there Bob) Dennis Day and Cliff Cox are mentioned-anyone know where they are.Dennis went bald real young I think.
  4. That is wonderful to hear-I would imagine the passing of Maury Mattingly was a big blow to Norman.
  5. Anyone know how Norman is these days-recall him well with Pool in mid sixties
  6. Keef, thank you for a wonderful post-sorry to hear about Clive Hitch-he was also member of the PL championship winning Rayleigh Rockets in 1960-then used to travel all the way to Middlesbrough with John Fitzpatrick for the Bears-I think Fitz packed it up around then.I recall Pete Munday doing well in the wet-didn't Barry Duke have a bout with cancer a few years ago-may be mistaken on that.
  7. Yes what about Clive Hitch(recall him at Middlesbro in 1964) and Pete Munday anyone know how they are doing.
  8. That's great good for them-does anybody see another name from that era around-I'm thinking of Bob Kilby
  9. The thread about Frank Shuter made me think of Mike-anyone know how Mike is -does he still run the garage in Minety??
  10. Hi Igori-thanks for the update-Gab Kadirov had a "Beatle" haircut-sorry to hear he has died -do you know when and how old he was??
  11. You read the most amazing things on this website-I sure do remember Frank Shuter-mainly at Swindon but I was very sorry to hear he had died-anyone know where in the US the accident occurred-did Frank live there or was he on vacation.
  12. Speedyguy-how old are you anyway-1957 is more than 50 years ago aargh!!Ray Harris was a great guy remember him from Newport-in 1965 at Long Eaton he rode a blinder for Newport in one of their rare away wins-I think he scored 7 from 3 rides at reserve-in one of which he beat Ken Adams his former Stoke teammate-is Ken still with us-I know Ray has sadly passed away
  13. Mea culpa for the mis-spelling Mike Butler -you are right its Gooddy and Bob C glad he is still enjoying his pint-he deserves to. Wasn't Colin originally a Londoner.
  14. Anyone know what "Joe" is up to these days.Always recall him with Oxford in NL and Exeter in PL
  15. Worth remembering is that Jim Squibb was already 42 years old!!Anyone know if Geoff Penniket is still alive and where he is-he was one tough guy.
  16. I'm pretty sure the 1965 Wolves wore orange jerseys and that Poole wore blue/white quartered jerseys
  17. Hi Igori-great to see you have joined the Forum-do you know whether Boris Samorodov is still alive and if so where-he was a tough guy.
  18. There was a well known feud between Mauger and Ivor Brown-it was alluded to in Mauger's autobiography-written years ago-I think it was called Triple Crown Plus-didn't name Ivor as the rider.Does anybody know why they disliked each other so much. Its interesting to me that Ivor was well into his thirties when he was top man in PL in 1963-64
  19. This is an interesting post-I had wondered about this issue myself. As a follower in the mid sixties , I well recall only three riders (I think) wearing coloured leathers-this would be in 1965-they were Boocock(blue), Broadbanks(red) and Cowland(white)-it was always a big deal when they rode.I liked the old days better-I hate the different colours now with ads all over.
  20. This could be a tough one mate-Stenners Annual has rider scores but not heat details
  21. Wasn't Eric Hockaday in the first ever race of the first ever British League match in 1965-Coventry v Cradley. He partnered Ivor Brown -I think the race ended as a 3-3, with Nigel Boocock winning, Ivor second and Eric third-can'r recall the other rider perhaps Col Cottrell??. Thanx Brian for bringing Eric's name to the forum-another whole hearted trier of that era.
  22. Brian you are right re Ken Adams and Stoke but when they closed down at end of 63 , Ken went to the Archers and was capt. there as I think he was at Stoke.
  23. Ditto your comments re sixties speedway Merlin-besides Maurie, I think Chris Julian was another long distance Glaswegian.
  24. No way its your age old saint-you accurately recalled the Saints captains after all-good on you. You can see Banister Court on youtube if you enter southampton v norwich speedway kindly placed there by Grachan.
  25. This is a dam shame-recall Maurie as Glasgow captain in 1964 and concur with all the comments above.R.I.P.
