  1. Hi Norbold, can you go and measure him and let me know!!!!!!!!!!!!!-seriously tho do you know if he is older than Split-I know he's taller than him
  2. Great responses all-thanx. I recall Cyril as being a tall guy and one not to be messed with-he would have been in his forties when he retired-big question is tho unanswered-who is older and thus is the oldest living World Finalist Cyril or Split???????
  3. In lat issue of "Opposite Lock" mentioned that Cyril Roger is 88 this December-meaning he was born in 1920-I reckon this makes him the oldest living World Finalist just beating out Split Waterman-is that right folks. Also anyone have any memories of Cyril's riding days?

    Ken Moss

I was shocked to hear Ken had passed away-anyone know when and what of. R.I.P. Ken
  5. Amazingly I can add to this thread-when I go back to UK I try and take in a few meetings. In 1989-I visited Long Eaton(my last ever visit there) and saw them ride against Mildenhall on 17th May-Gary O'Hare top scored for L.E. with 13 pts from 5 rides 1-3-3-3-3.It was a 48-48 tie.It also showed that year to date he was third in the L.E. averages behind Keith White and Richard Hellsen. The following night I went to Ipswich (my only ever visit) and saw the Witches host L.E. In an Ipswich 59-37 win Gary didn't do as well got 6 pts from 5 rides. His riding made an impression on me and I remembered the name -so when this thread cropped up dug out my old progs -hope this helps.By the way it was an emotive last visit to Station Road -went around the town looking for old landmarks-ate at a Berni's Inn-are there any still left??- noted the old chip shop was there, but looked for and couldn't find a restaurant called I think Banner's Farmfare-used to be one in Beeston also. Have both they and Berni's gone??.
  6. Agreed -I think we now have the definitive answer to this question-thanx for the detective work britmet!
  7. OK folks, I am getting more and more interested in this-so I consulted that trusty and comprehensive book "British Speedway Leagues 1946-64" by Peter Morrish published in 1984. If memory serves Peter used to write in the Speedway Star about the Midland tracks-and no before anyone asks he was NOT Eric Linden. According to this book there was a Jack Scott 1st, a Bluey Scott and a Jack Scott 2nd. The latter two are the ones who have been (endlessly) discussed and their careers as outlined by britmet(for Bluey) and oddfossengen (Jack 2nd) accord with Peter's book. HOWEVER-there is a Jack Scott 1st listed for Hastings in 1948-he scored just 7 pts. that year. Bluey is shown as B.Scott throughout and is also shown as B.Scott in the Stenners Annuals of that period. Therefore my conclusion is that there WERE two Jack Scott's as discussed but Bluey was a third Scott( I don't reckon he is the Hastings rider because he is always listed as B.Scott from the getgo). I still reckon his name was Eric. Does anybody know Reg Fearman because I reckon as Bluey's old promoter at Middlesbrough and with his excellent memory and records he should know.In fact does Reg read the forum?? I will buy a beer on my next trip to UK for anyone who can solve this conclusively. P.S. to Norbold and starghost can you add anything to this???
  8. I reckon this is a true mystery-I do not think that Bluey Scott was the other "Jack" Scott-Bluey was an Eric-I recall him very well in the PL with Middlesbrough-in fact I recall him being (I think) in the 1964 PL final when he scored I think 2 pts. as the Middlesbrough rep. I reckon there were two other Jack Scott's -lets call'em Jack 1 and Jack 2-we have been discussing let's say Jack 1 -but there is another guy who we haven't yet talked about-it ain't Bluey-trust me on this!!
  9. OK all joking aside I'm intereted in this-exactly who was who in the old Speedway Star it sounds like Eric Linden was everybody!!And while we are at it who is (was) John Hyam??
  10. Actually there was a real Angus Kix-he just wrote under the name of Eric Linden.
  11. Tiger Tom sorry didn't see you at Paris final meeting- particularly since I think I saw a rider even taller than Graham Miles there!!! Say it ain't so!!!!
  12. You mean they were all Eric. That sounds like he was the whole mag except for regional guys like Howard Jacobi, Frank McLean, -plus of course Philip Rising and Paul Parish,I read SS thru 1960's and I now want my money back!!!!
  13. Yes Angus Kix for one-think Eric is still around. Was he also danny carter??
  14. This is to Britmet-Colin couldn't figure out how to respond to pm(am technopeasant) anyway my d.o.b. is 1946-went to Clear Lake, Iowa-as you know last Buddy Holly concert-Surf Ballroom still there-statue outside, sidewalk where you can buy brick and have inscribed.Lots of Brits seem to have done so(not me-not that there is anything wrong with that!!) Ivor Brown was great and as noted CH was my favorite away track-lovely people there. Rock on Colin!!!
  15. Who was it then-Eric Linden-??don't be coy, it not like we are discussing who were gay speedway riders!!
  16. Thanx starghost-also Bert had a regular column in the Speedway Star(mid fifties) probably didn't write it himself. His brother Harry was a great character wasn't he!! Sorry to hear re Phil and hope he gets better.
  17. Howdy Byford is still singing in heaven-perhaps along with Buddy Holly-lets hope so.
  18. Yes that's right-don't know where I got the Exeter idea from-anybody have any reminiscences of Bert-was trying to recall if he was a heavy smoker-if so he certainly beat the odds-great longevity.
  19. Just got my copy of "Classic Speedway"(and what a great mag that is) and saw Bert had died aged 91-I recall his brother Harry more(Norwich-right starghost??) but Bert was a big name with Ipswich in the fifties, plus but not sure Exeter??
  20. Jack Scott the singer still performs here in Canada-another hit was "Burning Bridges" he is from Windsor, Ontario
  21. Good for Eddie-I always remember him with Oxford in the mid sixties-glad to hear he is still enjoying life.
  22. Glad to hear Jack is ok-wasn't there another rider of the same name around the same era??
  23. Thanx dantodan-great site and answered my question re Badgers riders.
  24. Hi TigerTom I think the interesting information is that the tallest speedway rider in the world rode there!!!Who was that again.
  25. Great to see the old Badger race jacket-didn't some of the old Brafield riders in the 60's include Laszlo Munkasci and Ian Champion-praps Ted Spittles also??Anybody recall??
