What will 2026 UK speedway bring?
IainB replied to Lionsman66's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
And a 5's competition (and maybe a 3's and 4's also) ... I've been trying to think what is radical and not radical in normal terms but radical in BSPL terms and I've come up with a "guest" team! Something similar to the Harlem Globe Trotters (remember them?), so a team of riders not affiliated to any of the other 5 clubs that travel around to the other teams as part of the league programme, they did something similar years ago when they went 18 heats with the "ghost" rider. Of course it's completely ludicrous but just the type of thing the brains at BSPL towers are likely to come up with! -

A 5 team league (if that's what you can call it) is very much the business as usual model, which has been proven not to work over the last 30 years. It's not the radical change that has been mooted. -
I remember on course betting at Cov and Sheffield... and Bees were sponsored by Victor Chandler for a while and SkyBet were also league sponsors for a short time

Betting was introduced some time back (noughties?) but just seemed to peter out for some reason probably another case of the sports authorities not grasping that particular nettle and working with the betting companies to onboard them as partners?

Hairy?

Ryan Terry-Daley, a 31-year-old speedway rider from Waiuku, Auckland, died in a single-vehicle car crash on Aka Aka Road in Waikato on October 5, 2025. His death was not a result of a speedway track incident. Details of the crash: The incident occurred early in the morning, with emergency services called to the scene just before 5:30 a.m.. Media reports indicate it was a wet night with heavy storms, and Daley was believed to have been the sober driver. Police are still investigating the specific circumstances of the crash. Following his death, the speedway community in New Zealand and the UK paid tribute to Daley, who was a mentor and champion racer.

Seriously though if the Hearns did want to get involved in Speedway (which I'm pretty sure they don't) then the SGP series would probably be the way to go. It has a proven track record by the previous promoters to WBD staging events in big stadia at destination cities attracting big crowds and you could argue was on the cusp of going mainstream at that time, so it's been proven that it can be done and an audience is out there, the series is just missing the characters for the public to get involved with, the razzamataz, the hype etc.

I know... but they are outdoor as are the big boxing shows, probably more like staging a SGP than a league programme.

They do Fish O Mania, which unbelievably gets TV coverage (Sky Sports) https://fishomania.net/watch-live/ And he setup the PGA EuroPro Tour which had a 20 year run. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PGA_EuroPro_Tour

I was thinking earlier who was the originator of the tassle. I remember Ray Bales wearing them, not sure if the whole Mildenhall team did?

Their big boxing shows are often outdoors
