I must say, I went to central park last night with low expectations, but it turned out to be a pretty decent meeting. Kent had their fair share of misfortune, but the depleted Colts side battled well, and there was some good racing. Well done to both sides for putting on a show, and especially Paul Bowen who was very impressive.
What has happened to the showground track. Once it was one of the best in the country, recently it's been far too slick, with very little material for the riders to work with. Today was an ok meeting, because of the score, but very little passing. The crowd was excellent though.
The track surface at Mildenhall has improved a lot in the last couple of seasons. I tend to avoid meetings there, if the cars had raced the night before.
How Eastbourne, as a seaside town, fail to run home meetings in the peak holiday season never ceases to amaze me. Why cram them all in now, when the weather is on the turn and the football season has started. Surely as a business model, it's not sustainable.
I have to agree. You can't keep taking people's money, and not giving them what they've paid for. Whether it's medical cover, track conditions or curfews. No wonder fans are leaving in their droves.
The saddest thing about this whole episode, is how the club has been allowed to die with just a whimper. It doesent matter how cookie dresses it up, when the Hammers move to Rye, the game is up. We have had hardly any home meetings to attend, to share our memories and say goodbye. The fact that Arena Essex will still be staging motorsport until early November, is the hardest thing to accept. What a shambles.
The cost in purchasing the stadium, and the renovation works to bring it up to scratch, would cost a small fortune. Who would commit such a financial outlay for two sports in terminal decline.
The reality is, the sport can't afford the top riders anymore. I can see some sort of training league, like the SDL, for the smaller clubs that can't compete financially. Similar to what Kent have been running at Iwade this season.
