i think dudley got it right by not using the cradley name. letting clubs enter the league that closed down years ago don't seem right to me. east london hawks or stratford kestrels look much better.
me neither. although i was a dons fan i was a regular at waterden road from 1970 to 1996. the idea of defunct clubs riding at current tracks don't do a lot for me.
having been lucky enough to attend three meetings at the west wales venue. does anyone know how many meetings were staged at the showground during the dragons short three year history.
the best second halves for me were the ones staged at wembley during the 1970/71 seasons. the lions promoters used to book in a couple of big hitters to go up against those that rode in the main league match. they were the only second halves my old man used to hang around for, other than those staged at plough lane that were a lot nearer to home.
i contacted my fellow collector pal john somerville regarding info on catford. he told me he has never seen a catford speedway programme and details on the history of the track seem to have been lost in the mists of time.
does anyone have any information on how many speedway meetings were staged at catford stadium during their only season in 1934. i went to the track many times during my career working for the dreaded GRA in the 1980's and 90's.
a rare sunny tuesday evening at custom house that i remember well. the wembley team contained jessup, harrfeldt, clarke and leonard all ex west ham riders. it was no suprise that it was an easy away win for the lions.
when romford last staged speedway it pulled in really big crowds, sometimes bigger than top flight neighbours west ham. if by some miracle the bombers were to return, i'm sure it would be a success all over again.
the dreaded GRA have been Property Developers for years. they purchased and demolished so many famous venues just because of their land value. i wont believe anything until the proposed new stadiums at reading and swindon start being built.
i think a london speedway reunion for fans of all the capitals clubs would be a good idea. the chances of the sport ever returning to this great city seem remote to say the least.
