I went to Pennycross as a wee lad on holiday in 1969. I seem to recall the track had a sand like surface, before being replaced with shale in 1970. I'm not sure if this made the track slower as regards to track records.
I've always felt the admission prices are one of speedway's biggest obstacles in attracting new fans. If the product was at a similar level to Poland, it could be justified.
My missus hates it and my kids lost interest in their teens. What is there for youngsters at speedway. It's a sport that has stood still and never moved with the times.
Despite the lack of interest, i thought I'd get the ball rolling. Weather permitting, tomorrow sees another double header at Arlington. Both sides have riders missing, so a tough one to call.
I went to the first ever meeting at the Wheels in 1984, and a further six meetings over the next 2 seasons. Unfortunately one of those was against Ellesmere Port, when Joe Owen had his awful accident. Some i did by car, some by train. I seem to remember it was a fair walk from New street station.
We went throught some monsoons to get there, parts of the M20 were flooded. Overall it was a good hard fought meeting. The crowd was decent as well, considering the weather.
