I must admit I had tears in my eyes after the last speedway meeting at Wimbledon in 1991. The only other time I've bawled was at West ham's farewell in 1972, but I was only a kid then so I had an excuse!
What amazes me as a kent regular, is that the track surface is as poor now as it was in the first year at Central Park. Surely now that full planning permission has been obtained, the track should have been relaid during the close season.
What memory's I have of plough lane. Briggo winning my first ever meeting there in 1968, mirac's return in 1969, tommy jansson's debut in 1972 and the emergence of Tatum and Wiltshire in later years. So long ago, it all seems like a dream.
That is the big question. Will people struggle through Friday night traffic for NL racing. Next week should be ok when kent are the visitors, a few away fans will help swell the numbers.
Rye house stadium in its present form is not fit to hold crowds like last night. It's an uncomfortable place to watch speedway at the moment. The poor track conditions and poor facilities need to be improved soon otherwise the current feel good factor will soon drift away.
It was a poor meeting racing wise at lakeside this afternoon, the return at eastbourne tonight was much better. I'd say the crowds at both venues were pretty similar.
Tomorrow sees the start of a new era at arena with the visit of the eagles to purfleet. It's a big step for the hammers to drop from the EL to the NL, let's hop the fans support it in sufficient numbers.
Too right it can't. My son is 23 and my daughter 18. They were both big speedway fans as kids, but haven't been for a few years now. What is in it for them, standing in a run down stadium with a load of old duffers, and being expected to pay for the privilege.
I don't mind attending my local tracks for a convenient night out, but it's getting harder to justify travelling long distances for such a poor product.
