One man and his dog at lakeside on Friday, heaving at rye last night. The impact of these two clubs changing leagues has been a killer for the hammers.
To stand a chance of getting anything at rye you need to be making the starts. Wolves were found lacking in this department tonight. Still an away point is better than nothing.
Going up against rye and Eastbourne on most Saturdays wouldn't do the club any good. I'm a regular at all three venues. If I had a choice I'd go for alternate Sunday afternoons.
Buxton was never gonna be a crowd puller with the glory boys racing wolves tomorrow. My ever shrinking band of arena regulars was down to two tonight, me included!
I was at the Abbey last night, and noticed the new houses are now rising behind the massive pile of earth in the car park. The location for the 'new stadium' does seem to be getting squeezed from all angles.
Speedway is run just for the benefit of the riders, the fans don't matter anymore. That's why they are leaving the sport in their droves. There isn't a single promoter capable of reversing this.
I was at Kent on monday so I never saw the meeting transmitted live. After watching it last night, I think it was standard fare for most tracks in this country. A couple of decent races, the rest from the gate. Most of the 39 meetings I have attended this season have been very similar!
It's not just a NL thing. Most of the tracks I visit are devoid of much shale. Although not one of my favourite venues, Eastbourne has been very well prepared this season, and the racing has improved as a result.
So you'd take one meeting a month in a tip of a 'stadium' that is not fit for purpose. Sometimes the gaps between home meetings are so Big, I forget the place even exists. God help us if we get a couple of rain offs.
I remember visiting somerton park early in 1975, and watching neil fly around there easily beating riders of a greater ability. This is not a dig, merely an observation on how much faster the new engines were.
At Eastbourne on Saturday there was a very good crowd, despite going up against the world cup on TV. At mildenhall today the crowd was again decent. You can see why some clubs have jumped ship to the calmer waters of the NL.
