When i cleared all the Greyhound racing equipment out of the old Wembley, there was a stadium tour going on at the same time. I stood there on the hallowed turf and listened, guess what, no mention of speedway. A sport that regularly attracted massive crowds was airbrushed from history.
Kent is a totally different. It has the meanest curfew in the country, with a mere 2 hours to complete the meeting. Tuesday's heat 2 pile up meant it was always going to be tight to beat the clock.
When i worked on the speedway track at Wimbledon, if the forecast was dry, we used to flood the circuit on the days leading up to the meeting. It helped in getting the moisture deep into the base. Of course the Mason's don't have the same luxury of unlimited access to the stadium.
It was far too long a tractor break, considering the meeting was already running late. Surely the priority should be giving the punters the 15 heats that they have paid for.
A strange meeting tonight. A few good races, but it never really got going. A lack of urgency and a late rush to beat the curfew didn't help. I was suprised to see the kids come out for a demo ride after heat 14.
It will be a three week gap before Redcar arrive at Arlington on the 21st. This meeting clashes with a 5.30pm kick off for Brighton in the Pemier league. Hopefully it won't have an impact on the attendance.
