I'm a veteran of well over 100 meetings on the island since 1996. In the early days you had to book your own taxis, then there was the unreliable special bus service. Believe me the present system is the best there has ever been, and generally works like clockwork. The only time it can get
stressful is on the rare occasion the meeting runs late.
Last night I attended my ninth meeting of the season on the island from my Surrey home. The team has struggled this season, but the racing has been good. I don't mind the interval entertainment, as long as it doesn't delay the main event and hinder me catching the 21.47 ferry!
The biggest millstone for lakeside is the M25 and the Dartford crossing. Add this to the huge shopping complex across the road, makes it a recipe for disaster attendance wise. The vast increase in the volume of traffic over the past few years have strangled the life out of the track. These problems will be impossible to overcome, regardless of what league the hammers decide to ride in.
My roots are with Wimbledon, although I did attended Wembley and West ham on a regular basis as a kid in the 1970's. So you could say I'm a speedway fan first and a dons fan second.
He replaced jon Armstrong who was supposed to guest for the colts. Central park has become a bit of a fortress this year. Kent could be a tough nut to crack over two legs if they make the play offs.
I think the problem is, a lot of the lakeside crowd used to support other teams, me included. Therefore it's a lot easier to jump ship, if you are just going to watch the racing without any bond to the team.
Jon cook announced at lakeside yesterday, that the hammers were reapplying to join the top flight next season. Would the crowds turn up in sufficient numbers at arena on a Monday or a Thursday, I have my doubts.
The memory bank has just kicked in. I remember getting johnnie Hoskins & jack parkers autographs at the golden jubilee meeting at hackney in 1978. They probably were my last!
