As a smallbrook regular, last thursday was my 7th visit of the season. I never thought speedway would return to the island after it closed in 2013. It had too many things going against it, the Solent being the main obstacle. The new promotion have done a fantastic job in turning the track around, and it has a real feel good factor about the place.
I went to three meetings in the series and the final at Wembley. Australia v New Zealand at Wimbledon, England v Poland at Hackney and New Zealand v Russia at Reading. Happy days!
Weather permitting, this time next week, lakeside's third home meeting in two months could have been staged. With Godfrey's gladiators riding on the 31st and Edinburgh away on the 7th, a congested end to the season is looking likely at arena. Why have no attempts been made to run the odd meeting on an off night, to help ease the congestion.
I went to the IOW tonight. The track was a bit tricky early doors, but the riders just got on with it. After the first tractor grade it was fine. It does seem to be a different sport at NL level.
Very good meeting on the island tonight, with some excellent overtaking by Ayres and Bailey. A big well done to Tony Steele for allowing the meeting to go ahead after the red lights had failed. Three refs overseeing one meeting, must be a first at NL level.
The fixed race nights should never have been implemented in a world cup year. It's nothing new for speedway fixtures to be cancelled due to the football. Poor planning in my opinion.
The thing is, a lot of people's thoughts were with the passing of the late Bob Dugard. Paying tribute to Bob was far more important than new fence panels.
Len pulling the plug early worked well for me, it gave me time to go to Poole instead. It was good to see an improved crowd at iwade on Sunday, despite the threat of rain throughout the meeting.
I was at the meeting last night. The racing was ok with a few passes, which is standard fare at most tracks these days. The match itself was very hard fought. The crowd was ok for an off night, and as a neutral I enjoyed it.
