Scunthorpe track is one of the widest in the country and has multiple racing lines, and is prepared so the inside and outside lines are both an option. There are several ways to take the second bend, e.g. Theo Pijper takes a resonably tight line. For those taking the tighter line, it leaves the option of moving inside on the third turn. It was Rohan Tungate's choice to go from gate 1 to chase the dirt around the outside on the second bend. You don't have to take it that way. All the best Rob

SCUNTHORPE’s Eddie Wright Raceway provides the best racing in the country. Who says so? The longest-travelled supporter for the home fixtures of the FluidAir Power Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance. Brian Schofield travels from Llandudno in Wales to the North Lincolnshire track for the majority of the fixtures at the EWR. He says: “The distance I travel to each Scunthorpe meeting is 360 miles there-and-back. It takes around three to three-and-a-half hours to get there, including picking up my friends in Bury. “I always liked the track at Scunthorpe and decided to make it my second track. Belle Vue is my No 1 track and has been for 53 years. “I consider Scunthorpe to be the best racing track in the country. Peterborough and Somerset also come high up in my estimation, but not quite as good as Scunthorpe. As a consequence, I am prepared to travel to Scunthorpe every week provided the forecast is good enough.” Brian has the statistics to back up his claims. As a real speedway enthusiast, he has travelled 142 meetings so far in 2014 and 2015, and for 134 of those meetings, he has statistics on the number of good races and number of passes after the first half lap. 119 of those meetings have been team meetings (the rest being individual meetings, pairs, fours, etc). The averages number of passes from the team meetings has been 15.57 per meeting. For the 22 first team Scunthorpe Scorpions fixtures he has attended in 2014 and 2015, the number of passes is well above average – at 20.41 passes per meeting. And of the 119 team meetings, the top five with the most passes (after the first half lap) are as follows: 1. May 15, 2015: Scunthorpe v Rye House (36-54). 11 good races; 39 passes. 2. July 17, 2015: Scunthorpe v Ipswich (43-47). 13 good races; 35 passes. 3. June 22, 2014: Torun v Czestochowa (56-34). 12 good races: 34 passes. 4= August 31, 2014: Scunthorpe v Workington (53-37). 10 good races; 32 passes. 4= August 26, 2014: Peterborough v Plymouth (51-31). 8 good races; 32 passes. Three entries for Scunthorpe in the top five, with Peterborough the only other British track to appear. So there you go. Scunthorpe Speedway statistically proven as the best racing track in the UK. What are you waiting for? Make your way to the track in Normanby Road before the end of the season, to experience the thrills of a meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway!

Cheers, but I spent most of last year experimenting with all the possible routes, and I think I've now found the optimum to avoid congestion on a Friday night. The biggest problem is getting out of Oxfordshire!! I don't touch the M40, and similarly avoid the A34 (the A34-M40 junction can be hell at around 3.30pm on a Friday afternoon). And with the Cuttleslowe roundabout roadworks on the A40, I now bypass that as well. Forunately, not many people seem to know about the Islip alternative route... I know about the B road that runs parallel to the A15, and used that one time when the A15 was shut due to an accident. The A15 is fine though - and much quicker than going through Gainsbrough or up the A1 (M). The B road route is the second best to the A15. All the best Rob

Arson, anyone coming from the M1 direction has a nightmare journey on a Friday. I almost completely avoid the M1 to get from Oxford at 3pm to Scunthorpe at approx. 7.15pm (Friday was my best journey for ages, got there before 6.45pm). Basically my route (for anyone who cares) is: back roads of Oxfordshire going through Islip and outskirts of Bicester (therefore avoiding the A40 roadworks, A34 and M40), A43, A5 (runs parallel to M1, which has roadworks from 15A to 19), onto the M1 briefly from junctions 20 to 21A, A46 (by the time I reach the outskirts of Lincoln their rush hour is almost over), A15, and then past the steel works and Eddie Wrights. Trips to Scunny on Friday evenings are a case of my pitting my wits against the Highways Agency So far (touch wood) I've won every time in 2015. Back home is a bit different, to avoid the night closures. Off the M1 at junction 21, then M69, A46 and M40. Unless A46 is shut around Coventry, in which case I head towards Brandon or Southam (depending on where the road is shut) and then come home via Banbury along the A4260. Normally back home within 3 hours. All the best Rob

I think with so many tracks in a similar boat, there may be a real will to do something this time. 2015 has been one of speedway's worst-ever seasons; there seems to be an air of doom and gloom nearly everywhere. Having said that, the last two meetings at the EWR (Peterborough and Ipswich) saw the place brought back alive. HOLUB SET FOR EDDIE WRIGHT RACEWAY DEBUT FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance, will give a home debut to new signing Zdenek Holub at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening (7.30pm), as they look to record their third victory of the season over the Newcastle Diamonds. The highly-rated 19-year-old Czech International will make his first appearance for the club a day earlier, at local rivals Sheffield on Thursday. Holub comes in at No 1, in place of the injured Josh Auty. Scunthorpe are due to unveil another new signing next Monday, who will replace Ben Wilson, another Scorpion ruled out for the rest of the season through injury. Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “It was far from easy to find a replacement for the rest of the season for Josh, but I think we’ve landed on our feet with Zdenek. “King’s Lynn promoter Buster Chapman can’t speak highly enough of him, and I think he’s going to be a terrific signing. “We need to catch the teams in front of us, and gaining a victory over Newcastle to take the three points on offer will help us close up the gap. “We want to climb off the bottom of the Premier League table before the end of the season. “Unfortunately, we’d had an enforced three week break in home fixtures. The previous home meetings against Peterborough and Ipswich were full of great racing and incident in front of improved crowds, and I hope everyone who came on those nights will come back. “The Diamonds will prove a stiff test, especially with an old friend of ours, Tero Aarnio, as a recent addition to their line-up, and I’m sure another cracking night of action is ahead at the Eddie Wright Raceway.” Friday marks Newcastle’s first fixture since Lewis Kerr’s dreadful accident in the Premier League Fours at Peterborough on Sunday. Some terrific news is that Kerr is now out of the induced coma and is breathing for himself, but doctors has stressed it is still a ‘very serious situation’ and that he remains in critical care. Godfrey adds: “I was at Peterborough and it was extremely upsetting, to say the least. Absolutely no blame could be attached to anyone or anything because it was a pure racing accident. “When something like this happens, it puts a lot of other things into perspective. It’s always terrific how the whole speedway world pulls together at moments like these. Everyone at Scunthorpe Speedway passes on their best wishes to Lewis and his family, and he’s hoping for some more positive news very soon.” A reminder of the special promotion, which will last to the end of the 2015 season, which sees all accompanied children under the age of 16 admitted for free to home Scorpions' meetings. “We’re always looking to attract more younger fans”, says Godfrey. “And this offer is part of that. Although I'm old-fashioned and prefer books to e-books, I'd glad this is now available again, after the print version sold out, and recommend it to anyone who didn't get the hard copy. Tony Mac gets the tone perfect, without either sympathising with or condemning Kenny Carter. It unfolds as a horror story, but it's a book that is impossible to put down once you've starting reading.
