I remember Oxford taking Martin 'Burt' Goodwin (who held the track record at that point) to Peterborough in fours in 1994 as our reserve. When he came out for his first ride in Heat 6, we were third. By the time he completed his fourth ride in Heat 10 (having scored 11 points), we needed just one more point to take the title. With Mick Poole and Burt in the team that year, we also won twice at Peterborough in league matches - we rode Peterborough better than they did!! All the best Rob

DIAMONDS TO PROVIDE STERN TEST FOR SCORPIONS HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions’ improved form over the last fortnight will be put to a stern test by the Newcastle Diamonds at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening (7.30pm). The Scorpions have picked up hefty wins in the last two meetings at the Eddie Wright Raceway, with victories over Sheffield (63-31) and Glasgow (59-35). Promoter Rob Godfrey is under no illusion that Newcastle will be tougher opponents, but remains confident that the Scorpions can win on Friday. He said: “The Diamonds are a quality side, no doubt about that, and we need to be firing on all cylinders for this meeting. “With all due respect to Sheffield and Glasgow, it’s during this meeting where we will find out just how far we have progressed. “It won’t be easy. But we have already beaten Newcastle by seven points around the Eddie Wright Raceway this season (in the Premier Shield), and I believe we can pull off a similar or better result again. “The last two meetings have been a terrific confidence booster to the side. We’ve seen landmark maximums for Thomas Jørgensen (first in British Speedway), Ashley Birks (first for Scorpions at PL level) and Lewis Blackbird (first at PL level). “Ash is just on fire at the moment. He was kicking himself for falling in the final race and not picking up another maximum last week, but it was still another tremendous performance from him. “Lewis also won the National League Pairs with Dudley at the weekend, so he’s really on a roll. “We’ve also seen real glimpses that David Howe, Michael Palm Toft and Ryan Douglas are also heading in the right direction.” Godfrey is predicting another cracking night of action at the Eddie Wright Raceway. He added: “Last week’s meeting against Glasgow provided some incredible action, including a Heat 13 that had to be seen to be believed as Josh Auty charged in between Joe Screen and James Grieves in the way that only Josh can. “Newcastle have some riders who are quality performers around our track, such as Stuart Robson, Andrew Tully and Richie Worrall. So I can’t see the racing being anything other than superb once more on Friday.” Admission Prices for Friday: Adult: £14.00 Student/OAP: £12.00 Child (10 - 16): £5.00 Child (0 - 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult) Family Ticket £33 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-16) Match Programme: £1.00 Teams for Friday (English unless stated): Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions: 1. Screen v Henka Gustafsson, both of around '92 vintage around the EWR would have been awesome! Very entertaining meeting yesterday. Still not sure how Josh got through the middle of Joe Screen and James Grieves as they were team riding in Heat 13 - awesome ride. And not sure how Tommy The Gun stayed on his bike, he literally bounced off the air fence in Heat 6. Fantastic for Lewis Blackbird to get his first paid max. And boy, Ashley Birks is on fire at the moment. All the best Rob

CLASH OF THE CHAMPIONS! HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions are looking to build on the momentum of last week’s big win against Sheffield, as they host Glasgow Tigers at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday (7.30pm), in what is a clash between the last two teams to win the Premier League championship. Glasgow were the runaway winners of the Premier League in 2011, before Scunthorpe succeeded the Tigers as champions last season (2012). Under a new promotion led by Alun Biggart, it’s been a tricky start to the 2013 season for the Glasgow Tigers, even more so than the Scorpions. The Tigers have scored just five points from 10 Premier League matches, and recently have brought in experienced Andre Compton and Dane Jonas Raun to bolster their squad. While the Tigers have been ringing the changes, Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey has shelved any current plans to make changes to his side. Last week’s 63-31 thumping of Sheffield put an end to a run of five successive defeats for the Scorpions and saw Dane Thomas Jørgensen making a return from a shoulder injury much earlier than had been anticipated. Both Jørgensen and Ashley Birks stormed to paid maximums – Birks’ first for the club at Premier League level, and Jørgensen’s first in British Speedway altogether. Godfrey said: “It’s no secret that we were contemplating team changes. But three things happened last week. “Firstly, Thomas Jørgensen came back from injury much sooner that we first thought. We’d really been struggling using rider replacement for Thomas – it just didn’t work. “Secondly, we suffered a rain off at Sheffield on Thursday (our fourth away league match) which meant our plans had to change. “And lastly, I issued a challenge to the lads before the meeting last Friday to show me what they could do. They responded absolutely superbly to that, with the kind of all-round team performance that became our trademark last season. “One swallow does not make a summer, but it was enough to convince me that we’ve now turned the corner.” Godfrey refuses to be complacent about Friday’s meeting. He said: “We can’t rest on our laurels. Glasgow won’t just roll over – they’ve got some quality performers. Joe Screen may be in the final year of his career, but he is a class act. “They’ve also now got Andre Compton in their team. “He came out of retirement for a day to ride in David Howe’s Testimonial at the Eddie Wright Raceway in May. He looked good in that, scoring seven points, and decided he wanted to come back full-time. Andre can be a handful around our place. “However I would be disappointed if we didn’t come out of Friday’s meeting with all three league points. If we race to our capabilities, I see no reason why we can’t send a second successive set of Tigers packing”, Godfrey concluded. Admission Prices for Friday: Adult: £14.00 Student/OAP: £12.00 Child (10 - 16): £5.00 Child (0 - 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult) Family Ticket £33 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-16) Match Programme: £1.00 Teams for Friday (English unless stated): Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions: 1. £29 for a ticket is not a bad price - about the third of a price for a rock concert. But why do I have to rush to get a ticket for Cardiff, when I can wait 13 months and buy one on the day. All the best Rob

DAVID & THOMAS RETURN FOR DERBY CLASHES SKIPPER David Howe and Danish star Thomas Jørgensen both return to action for the Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions for this week’s two Premier League clashes against local rivals, the Sheffield Tigers. The Scorpions travel to Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium on Thursday, before entertaining the Tigers at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday (7.30pm). Howe crashed out during the Scorpions’ defeat in the Knockout Cup at Redcar last Thursday. It was first feared that he had broken his collarbone. But it turned out to be a dislocation rather than a break, and after missing the return meeting against Redcar at the Eddie Wright Raceway last Friday, Howe returned to action for the second round of the World Longtrack Championship in Norway on Saturday. Jørgensen broke his shoulder in three places in an accident in Denmark on May 15th. There were fears that the injury could have ruled him out of action for two or three months. However, that has not proved to be the case. Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “It’s great to have both David and Thomas back. “When the medics at Redcar were looking at David, they suspected there was a break in his collarbone. It turned out to be a dislocated shoulder instead. That, in itself, can be quite nasty. However, David not only rode in the World Longtrack on Saturday, but he also scored five points against World Class opposition. “It was already a big boost that David was going to be fit to return this week, but then I received further good news from Denmark”, Godfrey continued. “When Thomas said he was having a practice skid in Denmark on Tuesday, my initial thoughts were that he might be back for the home meeting a week on Friday against Glasgow, which was still much sooner than we were thinking a couple of weeks ago. “But he then contacted me to say he’d done about fifty laps, without any problems at all. He’d tried going in deep, turning the bike quickly, and nothing gave him any problems. “Thomas is massively keen to come back, and he says the shoulder is now stronger than it was before the accident, so we’re putting him in against the Tigers. “It’s a massive plus to have him back in the team. Rider replacement hasn’t been scoring the points that Thomas would have. It’s always preferable to have a seven man line-up rather than using R/R.” Local derby clashes between Scunthorpe and Sheffield are always keenly fought contests, and this week’s two meetings promise to be no different. Godfrey added: “We’ll see what the two meetings bring. Our main objective will be to win the home meeting on Friday.” Admission Prices for Friday: Adult: £14.00 Student/OAP: £12.00 Child (10 - 16): £5.00 Child (0 - 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult) Family Ticket £33 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-16) Match Programme: £1.00 Expected teams for Thursday and Friday: Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions: 1. The June 2013 rolling averages, I would think. Top 4 added together. Skippy, if you're wondering why Plymouth aren't in it, Beck is not eligible because he hasn't done enough meetings as yet. Personally, I'd like to see the return of the qualifiers (under the old 16-heat 4TT format). All 13 teams involved (5 in one group, 4 in the other two), with the group winners plus the best second qualifying for a 20-heat final. The fours meetings were always good money spinners for clubs, with three sets of away fans per meeting. All the best Rob

Slightly over-the-top reporting The Monarchs management could barely comprehend what they witnessed at the end of the match and, if Lord Lucan had galloped around the pits on Red Rum, nobody would have batted an eyelid. Everybody played their part, but in Craig Cook Monarchs have a gold-plated insurance policy when it comes down to winning last-heat deciders. Finding fresh superlatives to describe the 26-year-old Cumbrian would tax a lexicographer after he scored a brilliant 15-point maximum and if he carries on in this manner, Cook is likely to have a sculpture of himself placed on a plinth at Armadale Stadium. Andre Compton Joins Glasgow
lucifer sam replied to Fozzie4388's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Part of a clever ploy by the Glasgow management to gain extra sponsorship. The next annonucement will be deals with Stannar Stair Lifts, Bovril and several slipper companies. Seems to me if Compton is scoring 3 points a meeting, he'll be scoring more than Wright was. All the best Rob -

Shovvy, you sound about 78. Do you mind if we call you Grandad from now on All the best Rob (a very young 40!! ) -
Scunny will be alright, simply because the people in charge of the club are so passionate about it. From experience, I've seen what happens when you have promoters who aren't completely committed to their club. We had one or two at Oxford, who treated it as a plaything, until it either starting losing too much money or a bigger club came along, and then they simply tossed Oxford aside. On the other hand, when it comes to the Scorpions, Rob Godfrey is the biggest fan in the place, which is how it should be. Rob wears his heart on his sleeve, and he wants to see Scunthorpe Speedway succeed. There are ups and downs in all sport, and speedway is no different. One moment you're winning, the next everything can all go pear-shaped. Not long afterwards you can be winning again. Even the Premier League championship winning season of last year wasn't without its difficulties at times. You can bet that Rob Godfrey is having sleepless nights, trying to work out how to get back to a winning team. It doesn't help that he's had his hands tied at this current moment, with the rulebook not being applied as it says, but that won't stop him looking for the solution. Scunny won the Premier League last year. Only one team out of 13 can do that. Some teams such as Somerset and Workington, despite having won other silverware, have never won a league title. You can't expect to win the league every year, and there's a very good reason why no club has successfully defended the PL since its inception in '97 ('95 if you include the two amalgamated years).... because under the points limit, it's very hard to do. Every club has ups and downs, and every promoter makes good and bad decisions at times. At Scunny, there's a promoter who won't rest until he's got things right. And don't forget the rest of the package. There's the wonderful racetrack (which I consider to be the best in the country), there's the training track, there's the Amateur Meetings / Saints set-up which has already produced some great young riders, there's a very tidy purpose-built stadium that has gradually been built up from humble beginnings and continues to be improved every season. Scunthorpe Speedway and the Eddie Wright Raceway are one of the real success stories of recent times. Rob will do his upmost to get things right this season in terms of returning to a winning side, but in meantime, let's enjoy the fact that there is a cracking meeting with great racing on display virtually all-the-time at the Eddie Wright Raceway. All the best Rob Peasley

Who Is The Oldest Rider Still Racing In The Uk
lucifer sam replied to alarmo's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
It's a shame that Buzz Burrows isn't still riding for a league team. Not only would he be the oldest rider, but also the most naturally talented rider competing in any league in the world. All the best Parsloes1928nearly -
The normally fairly benign M1 turned into a monster tonight, thanks to a festival at Donnington over the weekend. Finally got off the M1 at around 7pm and ran up to the track to see Heat 1 - phew!!! Redcar were deserving winners tonight - they are going to be contenders this year. It was actually a pretty decent meeting, with a lot of good racing, but losing at home is never a nice feeling. There's no doubting Rob Godfrey's passion for the club. I think everyone realises he's doing his upmost to improve our current fortunes, but it's not easy when the BSPA MC are trying to snooker him. It's too early to write off our season yet.... two sucessive home defeats, out of the KOC and League Cup, poor start to the league campaign... that rings a bell somewhere... and look what happened in the final four months of 2012. All the best Rob

Who Should Be In Gb World Cup Team?
lucifer sam replied to bri1966's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
I think I'd go for: Woffinden (automatic selection if fit) Barker (raises his game for big meetings; did very well in the World Cup last time around) Worrall (recent 18-point max at KL) Auty (impressed at Cardiff) Not covinced how Cook would go around KL. Also he was given a big ocassion at Cardiff and blew it by two-wheeling around half a lap behind everyone else, while Auty dived in and mixed it and ended up beating Lindback. All the best Rob -
