Paul, I've reserve my judgement until the season is over, Edinburgh have yet to win a single trophy after all. I think the strongest team I've ever seen at second tier level were the 1982 Newcastle Diamonds. Six heat leaders, while Joe Owen was probably better than Craig Cook. All the best Rob

SCORPIONS QUICK TO RE-ARRANGE SHEFFIELD CLASH FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions have arranged for last night’s (Friday) rained off clash with local rivals Sheffield Tigers to be restaged at the Eddie Wright Raceway next Wednesday (July 9th, 7.30pm). With an ominous looking weather forecast, yesterday’s meeting was called off at around 11am. It proved the right call, as Scunthorpe was hit by heavy rain in early evening. Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “The forecast was spot on. We simply wouldn’t have got the meeting on. “Thank you to the Sheffield promotion for their co-operation in agreeing to the new date. With no home meeting next Friday due to the Premier League Pairs, we’d have been left with a three week gap between home meetings, had we not managed to re-stage this meeting within that gap. “The weather is due to improve before next Wednesday. It should be a real cracker between two sides looking for local supremacy.”

Blimey, the Monarchs fans are running scared. They're trawling through the rulebook, trying to find ways to stop a Tigers victory on Sunday. Come on Glasgow. If for no other reason than to stop Mr Blobby posting 22, 23, 24, etc on threads. I think Blobby has been possessed by Count Von Count from Seasame Street. All the best Rob

Couldn't see how it was going to be on, with that forecast. Big band of heavy rain due. Thankful of the early call off, before I tried to negotiate a different route up, due to the A43 being closed due to Silverstone. All the best Rob -

Went to Swindon to see them get turned over by King's Lynn... it didn't go according to the script KL just fell apart after the interval, while Swindon got stronger. All the best Rob -
Danny King still hasn't got a PL average either has he? It's not just Ty Proctor. Don't understand why the qualifiers are not brought back - they used to be a good money spinner in front of good crowds (three sets of away fans). It would stop the annual debate on who is included and who isn;t. All the best Rob

Scunthorpe V Sheffield - Friday 04/07/14
lucifer sam replied to thebaron's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions will be looking to bounce straight back from a heavy defeat at Newcastle, when they entertain local rivals Sheffield Tigers at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday (7.30pm), with precious Premier League points up for grabs. The Scorpions slipped to a 22-67 defeat at Brough Park on Sunday against the Newcastle Diamonds, with only Thomas Jorgensen and David Howe offering any resistance. It came two days after Scunthorpe had picked up a 58-38 home win against the Diamonds, with Ashley Birks and Josh Auty both collecting paid maximums. It was feared that Jorgensen had picked up a broken scaphoid following a Heat 8 at Brough Park. However such fears proved unfounded. The Dane tweeted on Monday, following a check-up: “Update on wrist. Nothing broken. Just badly brushed and ligaments are stretched. A few days off and I'll be good to go.” Jorgensen is set to return on Friday, with the Scorpions expected to be at full strength as they take on their local rivals. Scunthorpe are keen to show last Sunday was just a blip. The team remain third in the Premier League table and if they win on Friday and Ipswich lose at Plymouth on the same night, then the Scorpions could move up to second. Results between the Scorpions and the Tigers have been topsy-turvy in 2014. Scunthorpe have travelled back from Owlerton three times with four points, but lost their home League Cup against Sheffield on March 30, the opening Scorpions’ meeting of the season at the Eddie Wright Raceway. Promoter Rob Godfrey said: “When Sheffield were last here, we were still awaiting for Ryan Douglas to arrive after his visa issues over the winter, and they picked our pockets and took the win. “We’re determined not to let them win at the Eddie Wright Raceway again. Since then we’ve won three times at their place, so we have back the local bragging rights and we’d like to keep it that way. “Our big defeat at Newcastle was a one-off; it was one of those nights for us. We won’t be dwelling on it. “Apart from Edinburgh, nearly every team has suffered a heavy defeat at one point or another this season. For example, Somerset went to Ipswich and got hammered there.” Godfrey is hoping for a bumper attendance for the visit of Sheffield. He enthused: “What’s almost guaranteed is that it will be another cracking local derby – clashes between the two teams are always hotly contested. “We won’t take Sheffield lightly, despite their current league position. I’m sure they’ll bring plenty of supporters with them up the M18, looking to get one over us, and likewise we need our fans there in good voice getting behind our lads. “Our last two home performances have been strong, and we need to put in another professional home performance and pick up the three points.” There are 24 heats of action in total on Friday night, with a nine-heat second half, including a Midland Development League match between Castleford and Stoke. Admission prices for Friday: Adult: £15.00 Student/OAP: £13.00 Child (10 – 17): £5.00 Child (0 – 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult) Family Ticket £35 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-17) Match Programme: £1.00 Expected teams for Friday (English unless stated): FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions: 1. TEAM GB STAR VISITS THE EDDIE WRIGHT RACEWAY GREAT BRITAIN International Danny King will make his first-ever visit to the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday (7.30pm), as the FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions entertain the Newcastle Diamonds in a highly-anticipated Premier League encounter. With the Scorpions also making the return trip to Newcastle on Sunday evening, either team could take up to a maximum of seven points from the two fixtures. King, who has competed in the Speedway World Cup in previous seasons, was signed by Newcastle as part of a recent reshuffle, after a slow start to the season for the Diamonds. The Northeast club currently sit in sixth place in the Premier League table, two places behind fourth-placed Scunthorpe. Scunthorpe’s own former World Cup star, Dane Nicolai Klindt, returns to action for the Scorpions this week, having missed last week’s 55-38 win over Ipswich, to compete in the semi-finals of the Grand Prix qualifiers in Poland. Klindt qualified for the final and is now just five rides away from the 2015 Grand Prix series. Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey has recently revealed that Klindt - initially brought in as a 28-day replacement for the injured Anders Mellgren - will remain in Scorpions’ colours for the rest of the season. Last week’s win against Ipswich saw the Scorpions pulling together to put in a fine team performance. Discounting guest Ulrich Ostergaard, the six regular Scorpions scored 12, 10+2, 9+2, 8+1, 8 and 3+1. The 3+1 would have been a 5+2 if not for a highly debatable for Matt Williamson in Heat 14. Team manager Dave Peet said: “We were on it and put in a professional performance against the Witches. It was pleasing the way we rode, especially as it was a team performance where everyone contributed. “We’ll approach the Newcastle home match this week in a similar fashion. To end up in a good league position, a team does need to take the three league points from the majority of its home meetings. We won’t be complacent against the Diamonds; we’ll be out there knowing the job that we need to do.” A huge boost for the Scorpions have been the form of the revitalised Thomas Jorgensen and Josh Auty in the last couple of meetings. Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey revealed: “Thomas suffered a major engine blow-up at Peterborough a few weeks ago, which landed him with something like a £1700 bill. Thanks to the STING fund (which raises its money through raffles and other fund raisers) and people like Andy Barker and Tom Belton, we were able to help Thomas out. “He’s been in brilliant form since he sorted his engine out. It’s great to see, because we knew all along that Thomas had the talent, it just a case of getting the bikes underneath sorted out.” There are 24 heats of action in total on Friday night, with a nine-heat second half, including a Midland Development League match between Castleford and King’s Lynn.
