It's not the commentators that are the problem. Sure, we miss a true professional like Nigel was, but Kelvin and Chris can just about pull it off. The problem is the lack of presentation between heats. With Sky and BT we had a studio to cut to, and some for of discussion to break up the programme a bit. This is what is now lacking, and we are missing someone like Natalie in the studio. What is the worst thing about speedway? It's the tractor going round between races. What do we see on dear old Eurosport? We see the tractor going round, and Kelvin and Chris desperately trying to keep things going - sometimes, as was the case on Saturday, for long periods. When you are at the stadium, you can kill the time as you are part of an event. On the telly, it needs something else to keep the program going. This is Eurosport I'm afraid. It's just not in the same league as Sky and BT and it never has been.

I'm not sure why food is included in the cost either. Even if you don't go, you're still going to eat.

It's a while since I've been. Niels Kristian Iversen won it last time I went, whenever that was. I actually splashed out this year, for the first time really. Home straight tickets and two rooms in a city centre hotel! Felt like I'd been on holiday when I came back! It's odd for me reading all the "never going again" comments, because, for me, it re-lit the speedway bug a bit. I'm already thinking about going again next year.

UK speedway slowly dying
Grachan replied to old bob at herne bay's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
It seems that for people who were watching speedway for the first time, this was actually a great meeting. I've just seen a post on Facebook by people saying ti was their first meeting and they loved it and intend to go next year. Also, my son's mate came along, and in the car on the way home he phoned his dad and was saying how brilliant it was, how there were loads of people there and how he wants to go again next year. Imagine what these people would have thought if there has been great racing and a bigger crowd. I hope that the crowds will be back to at least previous levels next year. There are many factors this year that could have affected attendance. I also hope the organisers come out and explain the problems with the track, and how they are going to rectify them. A bad track can happen. Wasn't it Warsaw where it happened a few years back? I hope the poor track this year doesn't cause the attendance to drop again. This is more of a spectacle with more people watching. The atmosphere in the stadium was still brilliant, but there were far too many empty seats where there used to be crowds. The riders not trying to race were a let down too. If Dan and Jack Holder - who only got into the series as substitutes - could ride it, there's no reason why the other riders couldn't. -
Just skimmed through on Discovery+ after being at the meeting yesterday. Nice words at tbe end fron Dan about Artem Laguta, and interesting to hear that Laguta has been helping him this year. Crowd and track looked a lot worse on tv than actually being there. Coverage suffers from being on Eurosport too as it just keeps the feed goung instead of having a studio to cut to and break things up a bit.

I think that's true about the Poles. Still plenty of Polish people about but not as dominant as in previous years that I've been. Other possible factors might be the train strike stopping many on-the-day people making the effort. Plus no reigning World Champion in the series might effect the crowd too. Definitely a lower crowd. The middle tier on the back straight and the large bank on bends one and two are always normally filled but there were a lot of empty seats.

I'm not sure the track was any worse than it was back when Chris Harris won it. Cardiff was rough for years but seemed to have improved lately. Harris would have loved it out there today.
-
I knew everyone would be complaining, but I had a great time. Took my son's mate, who is 18. He loved it too and couldn't believe how skilled they were. By the end he was booing Madsen for taking his time choosing a gate position and chanting "Bewleeey, Bewleeey" along with everyone. Sorry about that.

Why would you not get a ticket next year if you had problems sussing out the App this year? Next year it will be a doddle because you'll know how to do it.
-
If you close the open App on your phone rather than minimise it, then re-open it, the tickets will show. It's like a little bug in the App but easy to work around once you've sorted out how.
-
I get that sometimes. Restart the phone. (or, if you can do it, find the open part of the app and fully close it by clicking the "X", then re-open it) It happens if you close the tickets link but leave the actual app open. They are still there. You can also get them back by clicking the two bars next to the "X", which will re-open the wallet. You can't fail with the trusty turning it off and turning it on again method though!

Whilst I don't think the decision to give the WC to Adam was the wrong one in the light of the meeting being abandoned and, presumably, due to be rescheduled, I do agree that they could have called the qualifiers after heat 12 and gone straight into either a 3 or 4 man final to decide the title. I think they had time for that.

British Final 2022
Grachan replied to Hackett's topic in Speedway Testimonials & Individual and Shared Events
In my own head, yes, although I did say it was contentious. It's based purely on my own gut. If you look through the football way of deciding equal positions, however, you would probably have to go down to the rule which says it would be decided on ranking, so that would probably be Bewley, Harris, Brennen, which puts none of the three in the same position that I did! Anyway, congratulations on now having heard everything. It must be quite a big day for you. -

It would just be countback between the 3. Anyone else is irrelevant. For me, in terms of hierarchy, it would go Brennen over Bewley, with Harris third having not raced either (through no fault of his own), but I admit it would be contentious. That just seems the logical order in my mind. -

Having not raced Harris does blur the issue, it's true. The way I saw it was Harris didn't beat either Bewley or Brennen so Brennen takes it, but it is not totally clear cut. Personally, I reckon they had time to make a quick decision to have a 3 man run off with Bewley, Brennen and Harris to decide the winner. The track still seemed raceable for a short while. -

What you're missing is the rule that is in place that says that a result can be declared if the meeting is called off after 12 or more heats.. If that was done, then Brennen would probably have been the logical winner based on who had beaten whom at that point. The decision, presumably, was taken not to declare a winner and go for a re-staging, in which case a result isn't declared. So, there was no winner making Ellis the logical choice. But it wouldn't have been a farce (speedway fans' favourite word) had Brennen been declared the winner. Nicholls, Kerr, King or Worrall don't even enter the equation. It would have been between Brennen, Bewley and Harris, who were tied on 8, if a result was declared after 12 heats. -

When the meeting reached heat 12 it was raining but the track was still ok. They knew they couldn't complete it, so I do think they could have a final right after heat 12. Instead they faffed about for too long and that opportunity was lost. Failing that, I don't think it is too difficult to call the meeting with Brennen as champion considering he had beaten Bewley, whilst Harris had beaten neither of them. Once there was no result called, then I have no problem with Adam getting the Wild Card as he is still British Champion, but apparently the rules say a result can be called if 12 heats are completed, and, considering there was a ride at Cardiff at stake, I think there could have been a result. -

Why are people coming out with the usual nonsense about farce and so on by Ellis getting the wild card. He is still the reigning British champion. It's a perfectly reasonable decision even if it's not what I would have preferred. For me they should have known after heat 12 that the meeting was doomed and gone straight to either a 3 or 4 man final immediately. Failing that, I think Brennen should have been declared the winner as he had beaten Bewley. As Harris hadn't raced either it gave him a possible advantage points wise. -

Put the top 4 in the final and race it. Job done. -
UK speedway slowly dying
Grachan replied to old bob at herne bay's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
I think it depends on how the meeting is covered. I always prefer to watch a match live, but there is a lot of time to fill in. Sky and BT used to cover the spaces well, but meetings do seem to drag on more on Eurosport. I'm not sure if that's due to less interesting coverage or the fact that there are only six teams in league and I don't have one that I support any more. -
Me too. It was during the Australian Open Tennis when they had that offer on so I signed up while I had the chance.

I'm seeing people on the dreaded "Facebook" social media chat thingy saying that they have checked with the stadium and paper tickets are available on the day, just not in advance. Several people confirming it.
