The History And Status Within The Sport Of The Bsf
Andrew replied to manchesterpaul's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
It was 2001 Gemini.I found it in July of that year then unleashed Krissie on you all a few weeks later! False Dawn,Norbold, Kipper and Liontamer are some of the earliest names I can remember. Tsunami's 2002 join date for Phil would be when he moved the entire database from one forum provider to another and we all had to rejoin, hence why I have 2003 as my join date lol -

" Joe will move to the No.2 position, which proved to be so successful for him last year, and partner Simon" Joe was at either 6 or 7 ALL last season! "And I am often reminded that when Neil first brought an unknown Australian rider called Steve Johnston over he couldn’t get round Sheffield at all for the first half-season. Luckily we stuck with Johno rather than discard him after a few weeks. " Well Mr Machin may have recommended Jonno, but Cliff Carr was the promoter back when he debuted for the Tigers,so Mr Machin couldn't drop him.He did in 1993,but thats another story. So our cunning plan is to track Facu ( with a green sheet average of 3.08) at number 5 alongside two reserves which are averaging 1.54 and 1.44 ....

This isn't going to end well ,is it? Reading back though the thread, quite a few posters seem to have predicted what was going to happen.

Sheffield Vs Redcar Bears - Thurs 2/5/2013
Andrew replied to OdsalBoy's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Was there a need to be SO weak though ?,The team as built was 1.52 under the limit,so there was room to sign a stronger rider. And why Facu wasn't started at 6 or 7 is another mistake made by the managment... -
Anyone else think we might pull out the PL before the season starts ?

http://www.thestar.c...-plug-1-5240939 SHEFFIELD TIGERS co-promoter David Hoggart has revealed how club owner Neil Machin considered pulling the plug on the club for 2013. Hoggart represented the Owlerton side at the sport’s annual general meeting and says all efforts to bring costs under control have already gone out of the Premier League window. And he says the middle tier of the sport in this country isn’t financially viable unless clubs are propped up by extra sponsorship or individual benefactors. Tigers are run as a self sufficient business with Machin the sole owner with financial interests in the operation. And Hoggart is warning of a bleak future for the sport in this country. He said: ““Neil has put 20 years of his life into this club and after last season he was looking at the Premier League and considered pulling us out. The cost of running Premier League speedway far outweighs the return on investment and the business model is no longer viable. It is a situation that has arisen due to the cost of technological advancement and the deep pockets of some club shareholders or owners, who are able to offset their operational losses against other business interests. “I don’t know of any current Premier League club that has funded its operation from a revenue stream generated from speedway alone” said Hoggart. “I owed it to the riders, our loyal supporters, sponsors, landlords and Neil to do everything I could to keep us operational in 2013 and while I gave every Premier League club clear warning of our difficulties, we did not achieve the sort of cost saving we need to be secure.”

Total stab in the dark ,Rocco Scopellite.Has been over with the USA dream team of course but I take "never rode in Britian" as never signed for a British team.More likely to be a Scandinavian or Aussie rider though.

http://www.thestar.c...group-1-5065795 SUNDAY could be the day for speedway next year as Sheffield attempt to win back fans after a troubled season both on and off the track. As reported on Tuesday, club bosses are considering a change of race night after a season of poor crowds, with the Thursday race night possibly playing a part. And it isn’t just the Tigers who have struggled this season, with as many six Premier League clubs saying they are open to selling to new owners. Although Sheffield aren’t in that situation, they are still keen to have a more fruitful 2013 and bounce back. “Like just about everyone else, it has been a difficult year and we have to find ways of attracting supporters to speedway,” said Tigers chief Neil Machin. “We are looking at admission prices and other ways to get people to come along. One is obviously developing a winning team and that has been a major part of this season’s problems but the other is our race day. “Thursday’s are not ideal with all the other fixtures around Europe and it has caused us problems, undoubtedly. Sunday is one of the days we are looking at, but we are thinking about everything. “There are no Elite League fixtures on a Sunday because they run in Poland so that would make things an awful lot easier, so of course it’s under consideration. We have a lot of discussions ahead with our landlords and a change of race day is on the agenda. I must stress that this is only something we are looking at and although we may take it a stage further, it’s very early stages for us right now.” Premier League bosses are facing up to the biggest and most important AGM for years next month with most of the league losing money.

http://www.thestar.c...eason-1-5053321 SHEFFIELD could be looking at a dramatic change of race night as they look to bounce back from a difficult season. Club co-promoter David Hoggart has admitted the Premier League in general is struggling after a tough season at the turnstiles coupled with spiralling costs. Tigers have been no different and Hoggart says the priority now has to be winning back the fans who stayed away after a combination of poor performances and the dreadful weather. He said: “We may even look at the Thursday race night because we realise it may no longer be the best night for everyone. “We want to encourage youngsters to come and support the Tigers every week and we have a meeting with our landlords very soon to discuss many aspects of the business. “There are also a lot of Premier League riders who double up with Elite League clubs and Thursday night is busy in the Elite League. We are looking at keeping costs under control and that includes rider wages, so if we can look at avoiding clashes with Elite League dates it may help us in our talks. “This is only something we are looking at and we may take it a stage further but it’s very early stages for us right now. “We also noticed when Redcar opened on a Thursday we lost a hefty number of supporters from north of the M62, so a change of race night may just allow fans to go to both tracks. “We’re open minded on everything. “The Premier League has a major issue to deal with right now because it’s been a bad year financially for most clubs and now is the time to be proactive to try and change things, turn things around."

Evitts/Tatum...I think it was at the 1987 British Final? Evitts certainly was hard,he and Jan Steachmann used to have ferocious battles at Owlerton back in 1991/92.

My Dad rates Jim as the best rider Sheffield have had since he started watching the Tigers back in 1960.To rate him above Shawn Moran gives a indication of how good he was.

No,it seems to vanish from the fixture list after 1961,returns as you say in '67 and stays at Owlerton until 1982.
