  1. I don't think the new formula works. Out of the first three GPs, I have enjoyed just the one. The format used over the last few years was cut and thrust speedway, especially heat 12 onwards. In tonight's meeting the best two races were the semis - when riders didn't want to finish out of the top two. There's too many races that don't mean a thing. Bring back the elimination format.
  2. I don't think it is anybody demeaning Steve's achievements, more that he often takes the Mickey out of himself on here. For example, I posted earlier on this thread, having a bit of a larf, but only because Steve struck first by posting obviously false averages. From memory, Steve Hone was quite a good National League rider, probably better than any of us keyboard jockeys would have been.

  4. Hey Hone, you weren't that good.
  5. A spirited type of rider, Morton was once an amateur middleweight boxing champion of the Midlands. Born in Birmingham in 1911, Wally was a mechanic at the Austin Motor Works and rode as a novice at Coventry in 1933, joining West Ham in 1934 and, in 1935, Wimbledon where he was a regular partner to Vic Huxley. In 1936 until the war, he was with Norwich. In 1946, he returned to Norwich while Bert Spencer was posted to Glasgow, Spencer stating that he didn’t want to go to Scotland so Morton took his place. In 1947, Morton was transferred to Harringay for £250, plus Bat Byrnes and Norman Lindsay. However, his chances at Harringay were almost non-existent and at the end of 1948, he returned to Norwich. He left Harringay to join Wimbledon in a reported £250 move in 1949. A broken arm suffered in South Africa during the previous winter kept him out of the opening chunk of the 1951 campaign. By September 1956, the now 45 year old was a second half rider only at Norwich. However, he found form and made a place in Ipswich's Southern League side of 1959. He enjoyed middle-order scoring at Liverpool, Middlesbrough, and Bradford in separate seasons of the early-60s, his last league ride coming with Hackney in 1964, aged 53!

  9. Began racing at Norwich after trials at Dagenham and Hall Green. It was only after the war that he took speedway more seriously, racing his first match for Exeter in the August of ’47, soon becoming a team regular. 11. TwoMinuteWarning, That's a really good website.
  12. January 1992 saw the passing of ex-Wimbledon favourite Edward Jancarz. The 45 year-old’s death was caused by a family tragedy. Mrs Jancarz was subsequently jailed for 11 years
  13. Fifth pic down is PC from '78 (he had gold flames on his leathers in speedway's Golden Jubilee year, not that you can tell in b/w) and the ninth pic down is PC in '79, the year he had covers on his handlebars.
  14. I thought it was two men trying to drag John Perrin out of Belle Vue.
  15. How can you say Team GB was robbed of the Cup - don't you remember some of the Mick 'Homer' Bates decisions that allowed us to reach the final heat still in with a chance?
  16. Lukas Dryml - Rider Replacement

  18. Dinky Philpotts rode 3 matches for Exeter in 1947.
  19. It is only because you recall how Bruce Penhall looked 22 years ago as to why you're all so shocked by his recent photograph. If you didn't know who he was or how he once appeared, no doubt you'd admit he is still a handsome fella. I don't think time's been unkind to him at all. Until I saw the photo I was expecting him to look like singer Joe Jackson or something, the way you lot were going on. Have any of you compared a current picture of yourselves with one from two decades ago? Seems Bruce isn't the same for some because his blond hair has darkened, wears glasses, and has put on a few inches. People can be cruel sometimes.

    Old Riders

I believe Jimmy Squibb was 53 years old when he wore Canterbury colours in 1975, having started riding at Southampton in 1947.

Suffered a broken neck at Odsal in 1945, recovering rapidly to help Middlesbrough take the Northern League in 1946. A bad crash at Edinburgh during 1948 restricted his contributions for the side, even though he did pick up four maximums. Cradley Heath paid £1000 for him at the start of 1949.

Announced his retirement prior to 1955 season, later returning to the saddle. He retired again in July of 1963.

Chamberlain was on the verge of big things prior to a broken leg at Poole in June of 1953. A failure to become a regular at Ipswich in '54 saw him retiring from English racing. Two poor seasons back home in Australia eventually ended in retirement. One of the smallest riders at 4ft, 9ins, he injured an arm in on his British return in 1958 which kept him on the sidelines for the early part of the season. A broken wrist in 1961 cut short his career.
