Rye House 2015
mervjankefanclub replied to hackneyrocket's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Although Sheffield may have problems with their Aussies, that was my first thought, brewer. -
Just reading on the BSPA website that Jason Garrity has handed in a transfer request at Rye House and his name has been circulated to other clubs by Len Silver.....interesting

One of those incidents that could have gone either way......I would have been interested in Tatum's interpretation of it had it been Woffinden buried in the air fence though. -

Edinburgh Or Arena Essex
mervjankefanclub replied to Paulco's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Ooo, you are awful, but I like ya! ..go on then I'll take a nibble. In my opinion this Edinburgh side aren't even the equal of that 1991 Tigers team, never mind the Hammers, in fact they they aren't the equal of more than a few Moanarchs teams of the past. They are a great team in the current PL climate, but as we all know the second tier has progressively got weaker and you can only beat what's in front of you. Obviously the days of three genuine heat leaders, a couple of second string-come-heat leaders and solid reserves are long gone. You will always get the age old argument of how hard it is to compare teams from different eras, so lets just say this current Edinburgh line-up is a great team of it's day. -
We all know Pedersen is a wee rat who likes to dish it out but isn't too keen on taking it back. But like GB says speedway needs a controversial villain for the punters to boo and talk about on here and it will be that wee bit duller when he eventually chucks it. Tell you what though, he wouldn't have lasted two minutes back in the days of real hard men like Millen, Browning, Leadbitter, Grant, Gresham...et al. I would love to have seen him try something like that at Glasgow when auld Jimmy Beaton was in his pomp....just ask Nigel Flatman ...................Jeezo could you imagine what this forum would have been like if it was around in the 70s

You talk some pish, George!! ................................a summer dress at Armadale!!! -
Been the same since time and memoriam, it's law of sod, Heather ....I lost count of the number of times when I was a kid back in the 70s/early 80s when the speedway was rained off on a Friday night and I would just go out and play with my pals and the sun would be splitting the trees.......I used to think my Dad was kidding me on that it was off, just so he could go to the pub!!! ....and speaking of which, am off!!

What Pl Team Is Most Disliked?
mervjankefanclub replied to TMW's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Can't remember ever disliking any team, but Mildenhall were never the most popular visitors to Glasgow in the early 80s, that's why it was one of the most eagerly anticipated meetings on the fixture list -
Who Over The Years Were The Stars In The National League.?
mervjankefanclub replied to stratton's topic in Years Gone By
I think it's the circumstances surrounding Steve Lawson's loyalty that make him stand out that bit more. The Tigers were absolutely dire throughout the mid-80s and Steve fought a lone battle on away trips, quite often scoring more than the rest of the team put together. He could so easily have walked away and joined any team in the NL, but he stuck by the Stripes and for that every Tigers fan will be forever grateful. A nicer guy you couldn't wish to meet either and he was immaculately turned out season after season, some effort for a busy farmer. Hardly ever had an EF and probably only fell off unaided less than ten times throughout his career, a true professional. I think it's safe to say if it wasn't for Steve and Jimmy Beaton the Tigers could so easily have went under during those desperate times at Craighead Park........and to think he almost signed for Edinburgh before plumping for Glasgow ............as a wee aside I was just a kid when he came to Glasgow in 1978 and for the first few meetings I thought the announcer was saying Steve AUSTIN, so I thought he was some sort of 6 million dollar man -

Think your right, RJ72.....he actually rode with FOUR different NL clubs that season. I remember the inside cover of the Star having a photo of him sporting the four different race jackets -

Another 'only in speedway' classic..........in the 1978 Midland Cup the first leg of the final was staged before one of the semi finals had been completed!!! Wolves and Coventry had drawn their semi final and the replay was arranged for the 4th and 6th of October..........but Leicester and the Bees raced the 1st leg of the final at Blackbird Road on October 3rd .....the semi still went ahead on the 4th and 6th, just as well Coventry won....speedway!?...gotta love it!! -

People also seem to be forgetting the Glasgow promotion hadn't planned on having two U21 Danes at reserve this season. The Joey Ringwood situation obviously brought that about and forced their hand. -
Posted on Easy Tiger by Coombes that it's still 50/50 at the moment, Jose, but a replacement has already been earmarked. Theo Pijper as expected named as captain, but more unexpectedly has apparently been granted a Testimonial at Ashfield this season.

Already got that solid team man in the middle order to pick up those third places with the odd decent night thrown in in Rusty Harrison. I believe the final rider in the top five should be one capable of outscoring Harrison over the season for this team to succeed and I don't think Bager would be capable of that.. Just my opinion.

These two wouldn't have lasted two minutes back then, when hairy arsed real men were cutting about the speedway scene Personally speaking it's all getting a bit OTT and blown out of all proportion, a bit of a slap and pulling a heater off the wall It's not as if this kind of thing happens week in week out and there was a time when promoters would arrange things like this to get a few more bodies through the gates the following week or whenever the clubs met again, so you can rest assured that there will be an extra carcass or three coming through the turnstiles when the Witches next visit Armadale and back in the day when promoters promoted Ben Barker would have been the first name on the team sheet for next weeks Scottish open For me I don't see it as a bad thing if it gets the outside world taking an interest no matter how small then it can only be good for a sport that is dying on it's arse anyway. And for people to think it's setting a bad example to youngsters I obviously can't speak for others but when I was a kid back in the 70's/early 80s I loved it when I saw a bit of fisticuffs or aggro......like the night when auld Jimmy Beaton went chasing after Nigel Flatman whilst brandishing a shovel.......pure theatre
