21/06/1979 Wimbledon v Mildenhall Junior Challenge

Let me check; I may have the prog in the garage... -
Oh yes, local competition is one of the things that has killed speedway, along with television, the internet...
-
Andy's problem, I feel, was his style. He was a grass-tracker - and rode speedway like a grass-tracker. His style suited a track like Exeter, but not most other tracks. Like Andy, we had Alan Farmer, at Wimbledon, and he had the same problem.

Sad news. One of that great touring team from 1964...

Why is Speedway so far behind Formula 1?
chunky replied to LagutaRacingFan's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
The problem is that speedway fans EXPECT everyone to love it the same way we do - yet they constantly come on here posting how crappy it is! Speedway is my favourite sport. It always has been, and while it is very different to the sport I grew up with, it still is my favourite sport. I am not like most speedway fans though; I don't come on here bitching about others who like F1, football, tennis etc. I like F1, and I like football, but like speedway, they are very different sports to the ones I watched as a kid. That doesn't make them boring, and it certainly doesn't make me an idiot for liking them. Look at most of the speedway meetings we watch, and we think to ourselves (and often post it on the BSF), "What a load of crap"! I showed a friend of mine Chris' Harris' winning ride at Cardiff - and he just turned round to me, and said, "Is that supposed to be exciting"? Does that make him stupid or inferior? Of course not. Like when he goes mental over American football, yet it does absolutely nothing for me. Not everybody likes the same things - or appreciates the same things. Look at music. I get sick of people telling me that, "All classical music sounds the same". Really, you think a baroque organ piece sounds like a 20th century flute concerto? I am a huge Tom Waits fan, as I love the emotions he puts me through. Most people though, just don't get him, and are like, "He's crap..." I don't expect EVERYBODY to like speedway, but it surprises me that there aren't more. As has been said on here many times, speedway just isn't "cool' for most people. You could have speedway on terrestrial TV every night of the week, at prime time, and most would turn it straight off. Sad thing is, it could be the best speedway we've ever seen, but if they don't "get it", it does absolutely bugger all. I know that British promoters rarely "promote", but quite honestly, what good would it do? If they could even afford it... As I've said before, everyone thinks they KNOW the answer, but the reality is that they DON'T. There are many reasons why speedway doesn't have the following it used to, but many of the reasons have nothing to do with the sport itself. We can't control everything, and we certainly can't control the way people think... -
You know, that is a good looking top ten...

Last time I saw him was when he won the 1975 Laurels...
-
I thought so too. I was shocked when you came at me the way that you did, and I honestly don't think I have said anything crappy...

Thank you; fixed...

Why is my attitude crappy?

I didn't "conveniently" leave out grass-track; I simply tried to show you that I focus on solos, so why should grass-track be any different? There WAS a clear reason; he wasn't killed in a speedway accident, and didn't lose his life during his speedway career. Yes, I have included Alf Bottoms, even though he was retired, but it's not unusual for riders who have only been retired a year or two to return to the track. I feel that I am allowed to use my discretion when necessary.
-
I never said it stated "solos only". I said it was designed for solos only. Speedway, long-track, and ice-racing (as mentioned) are "solos" sports.
-
It doesn't matter how many times you have recruited, I am not a liar. It actually happened, and there are many similar cases over here. Stop acting like God...

Agree 100%. His average from his completed rides would be a lot higher!
-
That's a pretty crappy comment, don't you think? 1) The rules are posted at the top of the page. 2) The rules have NEVER changed. The site was only ever designed to represent solos. Hence no trace of sidecar fatalities. 3) It's MY site, and I make the rules. If you want to start one that includes people you wish, please feel free.

He actually won a fair percentage of his races - when he didn't fall or break the tapes... You never knew what to expect from him!

Not just in the UK; I myself have been accused of "white privilege" on several occasions. A few years ago, a mate of mine applied for a job at a university. He had all the qualifications, and would have been a perfect fit. He didn't get it, and they didn't fill the position. Why? Because they didn't receive enough applications from minorities! How is that "white privilege"? Of course it's wrong to be denied a job because you're not white - but why is it not wrong to be denied one because you are? Particularly when EVERYONE has the same opportunity to apply?
-
Please note that it is all solos, not sidecars.
-
Why is my comment "unfounded"? You don't know many riders from the last 50 years, and you admit that you don't follow the sport now. Why should I think you would know someone like Danny Ayres?
-
I'm sure he has never heard of Danny, so that probably won't mean anything to him.

I entered three about a month ago. It was for Johann Ammer, Arthur Green, and Barry Sams. I get people emailing me info.

He was from the east coast...

Thank you! Martin Luther King Jr. wanted integration; for everyone to be treated the same. These days, it's like everybody wants to keep us segrated by by applying meaningless and insulting tags on everyone and everything.
