My thoughts exactly... I did think that Tony Robinson and Tommy Roper would be likely candidates, with Wally Green and Cliff Parkinson as possibilties. However, names like Jackson and Young are a little too common to pin down. Certainly, Kershaw, Kirton, and Holdsworth mean absolutely nothing, and the only Grimshaw I know is Alan (Belle Vue in 1974 and ), which doesn't exactly fit in with the period. Steve

Malpass would probably be Cradley's Phil Malpass, who had quite a distinguished career. Allison and George STRINGER both rode for Halifax in the early 50's, with the former also riding for Odsal. Unfortunately, without more information, it is difficult to identify the others. Steve

Thanks for that, ST. Also, the Briggo video you saw was undoubtedly "Barry Briggs:Profile Of A Legend" from the "Champions" series issued by Duke in the early to mi-90's. The footage was from the speedway Hall of Fame which was at Donington Park. Unfornately, it closed down several years ago, but I am pleased to say that I did manage to visit (on a trip to Long Eaton) before its closure. Steve

The late, great Dent Oliver was most definitely English. 1936 World Finalist Bill Pitcher was also English. Bob Roger, one of the famous brothers, was English. Incidentally, Bob won the Wimbledon Christmas Vase at Plough Lane, staged on Boxing Day (December 26 for the uninitiated), 1956. Sean Willmott (Weymouth, Hackney, Bradford etc) is English. HOWEVER... I'm not going to disagree with you (as apparently there is proof that it's only spelt with one 's'), but most people have probably only seen it spelt with two. After all, that's how nearly all books, programmes etc, and even official records, list it. And Iris, sorry about the "Bjorn" instead of the "Björn", I just couldn't be bothered to use my character map... :-) Steve
